What begins as an online fantasy spirals into one of the most shocking family annihilation cases in recent memory. Grant Amato seemed to have everything going for him—a supportive family, a nursing career, and a promising future. But behind closed doors, he became consumed by an obsession with a Bulgarian webcam model he had never met. As his fixation deepened, he drained his family's finances, stole hundreds of thousands of dollars, and pushed relationships to the breaking point.
When Grant's parents and brother attempted a final intervention, tragedy followed. In January 2019, Chad, Margaret, and Cody Amato were found shot to death inside their Florida home. Prosecutors argued that Grant murdered his entire family to protect the fantasy world he had built online and then attempted to stage the scene as a murder-suicide. After a highly publicized trial, a jury found him guilty of three counts of first-degree murder, and he was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
In this episode, we examine the warning signs of digital obsession, the devastating impact of financial manipulation, and the chilling events that led to the deaths of an entire family. Could this tragedy have been prevented, or was the outcome inevitable once fantasy overtook reality?

Timothy Ray Jones Jr. was a South Carolina father who murdered his five children—Merah (8), Elias (7), Nahtahn (6), Gabriel (2), and Abigail (1)—in August 2014 in one of the most disturbing family homicide cases in recent U.S. history. Prosecutors said Jones killed the children at his home in Lexington County after becoming enraged and abusing them. He later admitted to killing all five children and transporting their bodies in his vehicle for several days before dumping them in a remote area of Alabama.
Jones was arrested after a traffic stop in Mississippi raised suspicions. During his trial, the defense argued that he suffered from severe mental illness and drug-induced psychosis, while prosecutors maintained that he understood his actions and took deliberate steps to conceal the crimes. In 2019, a jury convicted him on five counts of murder and sentenced him to death.
In 2023, the South Carolina Supreme Court upheld both his convictions and death sentence, rejecting his appeal. Jones remains on South Carolina's death row while additional appeals continue through the court system.
The case is often cited as one of the most horrific child-murder cases in South Carolina history due to the number of victims, the ages of the children, and Jones's efforts to conceal the crimes.

The Von Richthofen family murder was a notorious 2002 case in Brazil involving 18-year-old Suzane von Richthofen, who helped plan the murders of her wealthy parents, Manfred and Marísia von Richthofen, in São Paulo. Suzane, along with her boyfriend Daniel Cravinhos and his brother Cristian, arranged the killings while her parents slept in their home. The brothers beat the couple to death with iron bars, and the crime was initially staged to look like a burglary.
Police quickly became suspicious after inconsistencies appeared in Suzane’s behavior and statements. Investigators uncovered the conspiracy within days, shocking Brazil because Suzane came from an affluent, educated family and appeared to have orchestrated the murders largely because her parents disapproved of her relationship with Daniel. All three were convicted in 2006 and sentenced to lengthy prison terms. The case remains one of Brazil’s most infamous true crime stories.

In January 2013, David Renz was just another name on a federal docket, facing disturbing charges for the possession of child pornography. He was fitted with an electronic monitoring bracelet and sent home to Cicero, New York, to await trial under the "watchful eye" of the U.S. Probation Office. He was supposed to be a man trapped within four walls. But behind the scenes, a catastrophic series of systemic failures was unfolding. This week, we dive into one of Central New York’s most harrowing cases of "what if." We explore how 46 separate tampering alerts went ignored by the authorities tasked with public safety, and how a faulty ankle monitor gave a predator the freedom to hunt. On a cold March night at a local shopping mall, the system’s negligence collided with the lives of Lori Bresnahan and her 10-year-old daughter. We break down the timeline of the carjacking that stunned a community, the heroic final stand of a mother fighting for her child, and the massive federal overhaul that followed in the wake of an unthinkable tragedy.
