After welcoming fourth wife Robyn and her children, the Brown's lives are flipped upside down. Okaaaaay. I've been dreading covering this episode, still not sure why. Perhaps because watching someone's real birth on screen is too intimate. Perhaps it's because I can feel myself having deep annoyance towards Kody and Robyn, when they're just existing as parents who are welcoming a baby into the world. The recurring theme in this episode is how people in the Brown family are expected to perform certain emotional expression. The wives and kids are supposed to feel excitement. Christine is supposed to be welcoming. Robyn tries to squeeze out tears when giving Meri the thoughtful and generous offer to be their surrogate. Heads up: I share more about myself in this episode, including some details of birth. You can support the show by sharing your rating or review on Spotify or Apple Podcasts. Kody heads for the Vegas strip on a guy's night out, testing his wrestling skills and answering questions about his lifestyle; and the wives help set up Robyn's new nursery. This week, we’re talking about performance. Kody's strutting for his "friends." Meri is masking her rage with tears. And Robyn fenagles more furniture for Sol's jungle-themed baby room. The Sister Wives get makeovers and head to the strip for a night on the town while Kody stays home to babysit. How will they find the adult entertainment Vegas has to offer? The sister wives give the appearance of enjoying each other. Kody is completely overwhelmed with having to take care of his own children and pats himself on the back for doing the bare minimum. There's conversation about modesty and post-partum depression and anxiety. Trainer Bill is still the worst. You can support the show by sharing your rating or review on Spotify or Apple Podcasts. Kody, Meri and Robyn drive down to Las Vegas in search for a new home. Meanwhile back at home, the rest of the family plans a surprise birthday party for Meri. I am thrilled to sit down with Dr. Adam of the Sister Wives Professor Podcast to talk about this fascinating episode, a snapshot of the Brown's family life at this very specific time in their trajectory of a family. While the adults wring their hands over the move, the teenagers are holding the emotional weight. Christine (mostly Christine), Janelle, and the kids race to throw a surprise 40th birthday party for Meri. Mona the realtor makes a welcome appearance. And Kody is suspiciously happy. Christine and David visit Janelle in North Carolina to celebrate the purchase of her new property; Kody and Robyn discuss their now monogamous relationship and the possibility of bringing in a new wife; Meri dips her toe back into the dating world. This week marks my first foray into recapping a current season of Sister Wives. While the family is still very aware of the cameras, their guard is lowered, and the vibe is completely different. We see Madison naming her pain in estrangement, Sol being infantilized in real time, Robyn’s covert manipulation, and little signs of Kody's time in the manosphere. And woven through it all is the deep unending grief of losing Garrison, a loss that completely reshaped the family forever and raises the stakes of every decision around contact, distance, and connection. This episode is a toughie, so let's go through it together. I'm away so next week, you'll get another re-watch episode before I return the following week. Talk to you then!
