This podcast dives into the many benefits of reading, reviews some relevant research on this topic and discusses Laura and Sarah's initiative called "Reading for Rupert" which is a free educational resource for parents and their children to utilize during COVID-19. Happy Mother's Day! Today's guest is very special. Not only is she a retired public health nurse but she is also my mom. Welcome to the SLP Corner podcast, Mom (aka Erin). Erin has a breadth of experience as a public health nurse in various settings, from rural Ontario to Alberta to the Northwest Territories. One of her favourite aspects of public health nursing was parent counselling and teaching.

We discuss ideas parents can do at home to occupy young children in a stimulating way, positive parenting tips and tricks, and ways to navigate challenging behaviours. We dive into topics such as separating the deed from the doer and natural versus logical consequences.

Sometimes I come across a little tidbit that I like to call an SLP SNACK! It is a shorter version of my regular podcast that offers bite sized information that I feel is interesting and worth a discussion.

This episode discusses what babbling is, the milestones associated with babbling and potential red flags. This podcast is all about different types of learning styles and how to facilitate learning with each style. This is more relevant than ever since so many parents are now tasked with home schooling. When working with kids (or all people for that matter) learning styles is an important consideration. The Hanen program “More than Words” asserts that there are five types of learners (rote, gestalt, visual, hands-on, and auditory).

Dr. Lynn Kern Koegl discussed “Practical Ways to Decrease Challenging Behaviours in School, Home and Community Settings” at an Autism Community Training event last October 2018. In these videos, she discusses how disruptive behaviours are communicative and that all kids have them, not just children with autism or special needs.

This podcast discusses predictors of disruptive behaviour, motivating factors for disruptive behaviour and ways to diffuse and decrease disruptive behaviour.
