Hidey ho, neighbor!  Come on in for a sprinkling of weekly update!

  • Episode 97: Sam & Jacque Go Back a Ways
Alright!  Happy you're here!  We've got a nice big pile of podcast for you to sink your teeth into!  (into which you may sink your teeth)
Today's conversation is with Sam Haldiman and Jacque Arend of the Torch Theatre!  You've all heard us talk about the Torch by now, and you should've gone out to see some shows, take some classes, or even get onstage for a hot little jam! (like the one coming up this very Friday!)  The Torch is a fabulous place that generates some of the smartest comedy in Arizona, and it's a place where you can learn to become a smarter performer.  This interview is about the founding of that fabulous place, and two generous people that helped create it and help it become what it is today.
Jacque and Sam met through improv, helped cultivate a thriving longform scene, got married, and now help spearhead the Phoenix Improv Festival, which brings performers and educators from all around the country to our hot little spot in the desert for one weekend in April.  Now, we're not saying that you'll find true love and discover your life's calling by becoming a part of The Torch Theatre, we're just saying that it wouldn't be the first time.
Get out to The Torch this weekend and support The PIMMP Cup!  You'll see some improv, have a good time, and you'll help finance PIF14!
Come back to the Torch on the first Saturday of the month (that's 4/4, just in case) for a free drop-in intro to improv class!
Holy hell, we got our own shit to promote!  Lawn Gnome on 4/3, suckaz!
Alright, that's enough.  Go to Torch.  Thanks for listening; keep coming out to shows and supporting the Live, Local, Agreeing, Heightening, Independent PHX Comedy Scene!

  • A Big Trip
Why hello there.  Fancy meeting you here.
We have a quick little blog post to throw out there and then we're off to do some other shit!
Last week's Goodbye Cruel World at Space 55 was its usual badass self.  You should've been there, maaaaan.  We had a good time, audiences were entertained, and a certain theater made a little bit of money.  Win-win-win-win-win, right?
Jamie just had a nice long trip to do a show in El Paso.  Listen in for the recap!
Speaking of certain little theaters, we feel obligated to give you a sneak peek of next week's podcast with Sam Haldiman and Jacque Arend of The Torch Theatre!  We had a good little interview, a nice little husband and wife chat.  We got to learn about how they met, and a little bit about the history of The Torch.  Like did you know that one of the two of them isn't a founder of the Torch?  I know, right?  Well, stay tuned to S&M Comedy to find out which one!
This very week, The Torch is holding The PIMMP Cup!  It's a March Madness-esque improv bracket comepetition thingie!  Buy tickets to see improv troupes battle head to head Friday 8.30pm or 10pm, vie for your approval, and hopefully advance to the Finals on March 27th!
This Saturday, The Torch will be hosting SNL's Paul Brittain, so be sure to get tickets and attend a very awesome show!
Alright, that about does it for us.  Thanks for listening, and keep coming out to shows and supporting the Live, Local, Sweltering, Sweating, Overheated Independent PHX Comedy Scene!

  • Episode 96: Jimmy Earll in Your Grill
What's up, brah?  Wait, why the fuck would we say that?
Anyway, today we have another fun little podcast for you, this time we're interviewing the fabulous Jimmy Earll, out from Sacramento, CA!  Jimmy is originally a PHX comic; getting his start at The Comedy Spot and in writing sessions with local stalwarts Mike Kennedy, Short Bus Krause, and Brian Ricci.  It wasn't long before he headed west to set up shop in Sactown, filling a comedy hole at night and cavities during the day.
That's right, folks, not only is he a fantastic touring comic, but he's also a dentist!  And a husband and a father.  So weirdly responsible, huh?  Well, you'll get to hear all about that, as well as originally being from Canadia, the importance of creating your own stagetime, and some of the best clubs in the country.
This week!  Goodbye Cruel World hits Space 55 with a sinister glee!
Find more Jimmy Earll on Instagram, Twitta, and Facenbooken!
Enjoy!  Thanks for listening; keep coming out to shows and supporting the Live, Local, Wheelin', Dealin', Hard Boiled Egg-Peelin' Independent PHX Comedy Scene!

  • Sleepytime Tease
Howdy, peeps! Time for a quick little weekly update and then you can get on with your day. Whatever day you're planning on having.
We hope you're enjoying the Don Steinmetz interview, and we certainly hope that it's motivation enough to get out to Hidden house tonight, this very Wednesday, for the first ever Old-Timer's Night! Stu Baker, Don Steinmetz, Myke Dehu, Kirk Buckhout, Ronnie D, and Steve Maxwell will give you a fantastic evening of comedy and take you back to the halcyon days of Entertainment Alley, which only a few people outside of the nursing home actually remember.
And we have our own shows to promote, of course, this Friday, we'll be back out at Lawn Gnome Publishing for another round of First Friday Comedy, Phoenixes's most independentest comedy show! Come out to the little book store on Roosevelt Row, deep in the heart of the First Friday Art Walk, for some free comedy under the stars! BYOB and we'll see you at 10pm!
Second Friday, get your butt out to Space 55 for another rousing rendition of suicide notes, eulogies, and touching rememberances, as Goodbye Cruel World returns to the little black box theater that could, Friday the 13th at 10.30pm!
Alright, we told you it'd be quick. Thanks for listening; keep coming out to shows and supporting the Live, Local, Lethargic, Sleepy Independent PHX Comedy Scene!

  • Episode 95: Don Steinmetz- A Different Virginity
Happy 10 months to Christmas day!  Hahahahahaha- that's not a real day.
But, today is a pretty awesome day, because it's a "release a really good S&M Comedy Podcast Day!"  Today's fantastic interview is with Don Steinmetz, longtime PHX comic and even longer time PHX policeman!  He's been known for telling fun jokes about his policework on stage for years now, and since he just retired after 35 years on the force, we decided it would be a great time to sit down with him and get some more in depth stories!  And boy, are there some deep stories.  About 13 inches deep, huh, Don?  *wink*
It's a great talk, super fun, and a bit insightful into the stresses of putting your life on the line every day for the greater good.  It's a rough job, so go hug a cop today.  Maybe not while they're on duty, that might wind up badly.
If you want to see more Steinmetz, get out to the Hidden House on March 4 and see the Old Timer's Night, featuring Don, Stu Baker, Steve Maxwell, Myke Dehu, Kirk Buckhout, and Ronnie D!
Follow Don on Twitterz and Facebookz!
Get ready for Lawn Gnome next Friday and Goodbye Cruel World at Space 55 on 3/13!
Thanks for listening; keep coming out to shows and supporting the Live, Local, Law-Abiding, Well-Mannered Independent PHX Comedy Scene!

  • Mahogany Hallmark Cards
Hello, chaps!  Time for a quick audio update and then get the fuck out!
We hope you enjoyed the JT and Jay podcast last week; it was just the right amount of DIY punk rock infusion that we needed in our tired souls.  Storrs Objection was pretty damned fantastic once again.  So fantastic, in fact, that The Storrs Objection is now going to be a monthly series at Space 55!  We here at S&M Comedy Presents will be sad to see our newest show striking off on its own, but Matt & Bill do all the heavy lifting, so we're very happy that they're getting their own special night.
We have yet to set our lineups for Lawn Gnome on 3/6 or Goodbye Cruel World on 3/13, so stay tuned to S&M Comedy for that very privileged information!
Thanks for listening; keep coming out to shows and supporting the Live, Local, Literary, Well-Read, Independent PHX Comedy Scene!

  • Episode 94: Jay Whitecotton and JT Habersaat Explain Why Everywhere Sucks
And another S&M Comedy Podcast drops, with a hearty THUD!  (was "hearty thud" ever one of those Batman visual sound effects like "ka-pow" and "bamm?"  Because it should've been.)
JT Habersaat and Jay Whitecotton are two awesome nationally touring comics based out of Austin, TX.  These two guys are the very epitome of independent DIY comedy.  They wrote the book  We originally met them when they came through our Monkey Pants stomping grounds years ago, and we immediately felt a kinship.  Fantastic bonds were forged, and when they were in town recently touring with Mishka Shubaly, we were very excited to get around the card table with them.
You'll get to hear a great interview about how to start an indie scene, how much Phoenix sucks, and you'll receive a fine, firm kick in the ass about how lazy you are at comedy.
This Friday, come out to Space 55 for another fantabulous Storrs Objection!  This month, there will be a romance theme attached to the show, so our comics, Amy Blackwell, Charlie Speez, Dan Amaro, Anthony Desamito, and Molly Dean will all have to write about something with which they're very unfamiliar- being loved!
Thanks for listening; keep coming out to shows and supporting the Live, Local, Swanky, Fancy, Independent PHX Comedy Scene!

  • The Business End
Hola, everybody!  We've got a quick update for you and then you can get on with your lives.  Because we know your lives just immediately halt when a new S&M Comedy drops.
The big news that we have to share is the Altercation Punk Comedy Tour making a stop at the Hidden House this very Wednesday, 2/4!  JT Habersaat and Jay Whitecotton will be bringing Mishka Shubaly through Phoenixes's Longest Running Independent Comedy Show for a night of true DIY punkballs in your face comedy in your face and stuff.  9pm!  $10!  Fuck yeah!
Friday, we're back at Lawn Gnome Publishing, DIYing it again in our own special way!  Live, Local, Independent Comedy, always free, BYOB, kicking ass in the back yard on a First Friday on the PHX Art Walk.  Fuck yeah again!
Next Friday, The Storrs Objection is back for round two at Space 55!  This being the month of February, we decided to throw the theme of ROMANCE onto all our performers, and make them all write new material for this show, just to have it tramped on and ridiculed by Matt Storrs and Bill Binder, the cruel bastards.  Come to Space 55 and see the dickheadery unfold!
That's all we've got for now!
Thanks for listening; keep coming out to shows and supporting the Live, Local, Sugary, Doughy, Independent PHX Comedy Scene!
