  • You’ll Get a Story Out Of It.
Hola!  Let's have a quickie little update and be on our merry way!
We had a great show at Lawn Gnome this past Friday!  If you haven't been out in a while, we've changed the format slightly to include more performers and quicker sets, and the audiences are responding quite favorably.  You should get out to Lawn Gnome for First Friday on December 5th!  It will be cold, but not so cold your butt will stick to the seat.  Unless you really want that to happen.  We could make it happen.
This Friday, it won't be nearly as cold at Space 55 for Silence: Comedians on Storytelling!  BYOB and a $5 donation to the little black box theater that could, and enjoy a nice comfy seat INSIDE and everything!  Oh yeah, and there will be comedians telling stories there, too.
Also, Wednesday, Jamie and Steve will both be out at Third Space, Steve Maxwell's new Wednesday night show.  Third Space is at 1028 Grand Avenue, the show is free, and there is a bar.  What more reason do you need to come and check out a new venue with us?
Hey, we told you it would be quick.  Thanks for listening; keep coming out to shows and supporting the Live, Local, Incandescent, Independent PHX Comedy Scene!

  • Episode 90: Kristofer Royer Explains Tortoise Mating Habits
It is Wednesday, and that means another S&M Comedy Podcast!  Another S&M Comedy Podcast?  Yes.  Another one.
Today's handy dandy informative entertaining conversation is with longtime PHX Comedy mainstay Kristofer Royer!  We had a fun time recording this one; Kris is one of those guys on the scene that is able to be friends with everyone, able to captivate any comedy audience while simultaneously winning over the asshole comics in the back of the room.  Not sure why it took us so long to get this conversation on record (holy crap episode 90), but we're glad it finally happened.  So, finally, 90 S&M Comedys in, you'll get to hear about Kris's thoughts on hip-hop, ADD, marriage, cats, and turtle dicks.  Finally.
This Friday is First Friday!  We're back at Lawn Gnome, bringin' our own booze and independently comedying with Andy Steinberg, Genevieve Rice, Jeff Turbitt, and Jules Hyde!  Get down to the little bookstore at 905 N 5th Street in the heart of Roosevelt Row at 10pm for a little comedy under the stars!  Or clouds.  Who knows.
Next Friday, 11/14, we'll return with another S&M Comedy Presents...Silence- Comedians on Storytelling at Space 55!  Bring your sexy ass and a $5 donation to the theater, and let's get nice & uncomfortable together!
Royer on Facebook and Twitter.  His internet presence is like internet presents!

  • Quiet Week.
Nothing to see here.  Move along.  But before you do, take this S&M Comedy Weekly Update with you!
There really isn't much to talk about.  Steve's going to be at TCA this Friday at 7.30.  You should make it out to that, simply because it's a total mystery who the headliner is, and it's TCA, and shows there are always fantastic.  Jamie's got a bit of a reprieve from comedy while sorting out some shit in his personal life.  Hey, maybe there will be a story to come out of it...speaking of...
It is almost time for another round of Silence: Comedians on Storytelling at Space 55!  Add yourself to the facebook event and then physically add yourself to the actual event!
And if that weren't enough independent comedy for you, the OTHER independentiest independent comedy show in PHX is one week prior, First Friday at Lawn Gnome Publishing!  Get the fuck out!
Thanks for listening; keep coming out to shows and supporting the Live, Local, Independent, Moving, Juking, Shaking, Doin' it, you know, PHX Comedy Scene!

  • Episode 89: It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane! It’s Charlie Speez!
Si bueno!  Time for another S&M Comedy Podcast!
Today's fantastic little interview is with Charlie Muthafuckin' Speee--wait a second.  Haven't we already done a podcast with Charlie Speez?  Yes, came the answer.  Yes, we have.  BUT!  We have not done THIS interview with Charlie Speez.
THIS interview is an epic tale of journeying to far-off lands with a band of merry travellers, some of whom may not finish the venture!  This is the tale of Three Dudes, One Endeavor, the tour to New York that Charlie took with Richie Tolway and Danny Vega, being chronicled by an unnamed videographer.  It's a good story.  Good enough to listen to while on a plane.  *wink*
Keep your eyes peeled right here for news about First Friday Comedy at Lawn Gnome Publishing on 11/7 and S&M Comedy Presents...Silence: Comedians on Storytelling on 11/14!
Find Charlie on Twitter and Facebook!
Get out to Brigett's Last Laugh on 11/25 for Snap Battles, featuring Charlie himself performing, and Jamie, the reigning champion, coming back for a quick roasting!
Thanks for listening; keep coming out to shows and supporting the Live, Local, Sleepy, Lethargic, Independent PHX Comedy Scene!

  • Forsooth!
'Ello, guvnah!  Toime for a quick audio update, eh?  (did we just go cockney to Canadian in one sentence?  kinda.)
There are but a few things to cover here, most importantly is the fantastic S&M Comedy Presents...Poetry Slim that just occurred!  It was, as always, pretty goddamned awe-inspiring to see the way all our performers ran with the concept.  From raps, to haikus, to multi-movement modern epics, everyone just brought their heavy bats to crush Poetry Slim out of the park.
S&M Comedy Presents occurs every second Friday of the month at Space 55, so get ready for the next edition on November 14th, S&M Comedy Presents...Silence: Comedians on Storytelling!
Get up to Prescott this Saturday for an evening of standup at Brick & Bones Moonshine Bistro!

  • Episode 88: Party Size Genevieve Rice
Hey alriiiiight!  Time for another S&M Comedy Podcast, right in your ears!
Today's nice little interview is with Genevieve Rice!  Genevieve first started performing on an open mic in her home state of Oklahoma when she was just a wee little college student.  Since those meager beginnings, she has become a much loved comedy fixture both at bar shows and at comedy clubs, she has created a very creative show in the always hilarious Snark Show, and she has become a homeowner with a reasonable credit score.  You know, things all comics aspire to achieve, but probably never will.
You'll get to hear about all that, plus stories about religion, Twitter, Taco Bueno, marriage, jazz, and cats on today's S&M Comedy Podcast!
Genevieve will be hosting (as in holding the show at her house) and headlining The Social Media Show this Wednesday!
Get to liking Thank You for Being a Podcast, with episodes coming out soon!
Be sure to check out Genevieve's website, Facebook, Instagram, and incredibly prolific Twitter!  You could also find her on Ello, but we're not really sure what that is yet.
This Friday is Poetry Slim!  A laundry list of comics all get together and shit on the sensitive art of poetry!  That's this Friday at 10.30pm at Space 55!  BYOB and a fivespot to get your ass in the door!
That's about it for us!  Thanks for listening; keep coming out to shows and supporting the Live, Local, Troubled, Perturbed, Disturbed Independent PHX Comedy Scene!

  • These are the Days of Our Lives
Well, they WERE the days of our lives, anyway.
This week we bid farewell to The Hidden House.  The home of Phoenixes's Longest Running Independent Comedy show has shut its doors for good.  The home of the show that started Steve and Jamie in comedy, that started so many Phoenix comedians, the place that has been facing dwindling bar customers ever since losing the kitchen a couple years ago, has finally succumbed to what was probably inevitable.
If there seems to be an implosion in PHX Comedy these days, it's probably a sign that we're too deeply entrenched to see a bigger picture.  Certainly PHX Comedy is not suddenly receding and drying out like an inland sea in an arid desert, right?  What we're experiencing now is most likely a shakeup.  The old guard is getting rattled out of their entrenched positions; making way for younger comics to become producers and create new venues and new stage opportunities.
We're honestly excited about all the changes that are going on.  Excited for our new found free time to work on ourselves and our own material, and exited to see what pans out in the coming months.  Do us proud, PHX Comedy.  Don't be dicks, and do us proud.
This Friday is First Friday!  That means First Friday Comedy at Lawn Gnome Publishing!  Come to the little bookstore that could on Roosevelt Row in the heart of the arts district and get some free independent comedy in ya!
That means next Friday is Second Friday (which isn't really a thing).  But that means it's S&M Comedy Presents...Poetry Slim!  Get on down to Space 55, 636 E Pierce St, PHX's home for cutting edge independent theater, at 10.30pm on Friday, 10/10, for an evening of comics shitting all over the lovely art of poetry!
That's it for us!  Thanks for listening, and keep coming out to shows and supporting the Live, Local, Slightly Smaller Independent PHX Comedy Scene!

  • Episode 87: S&M Comedy Presents…This Day in History 9/12/14!
Hello, and what the fuck is going on?  What is this history stuff?  Where's my usual boring comedy talk?!
Well, it just so happens that we had one of the best This Day in History shows this past S&M Comedy Presents, and it just so happens that we were also able to get some really good audio out of it!  So screw everything, let's listen to a comedy show!
This particular This Day in History featured a lineup of Steve Maxwell, Aaron Kyle, Erin Ontko, Anwar Newton, Kirk Buckhout, NegativSteve, Jeff Turbitt, Matt Storrs, and of course, Steve & Jamie.  All comics on This Day in History are to research and write jokes about the events that occurred throughout history on the date of the performance.  On this particular date, September 12, comics had a few events to choose from- the births of Louis C.K. and Paul F. Tompkins, Adolf Hitler joining the German Worker's Party, and the death of Johnny Cash, to name a few.  There's always something to write about for every This Day in History, and half the fun is hearing different takes on the same event by different performers.
This show is, of course, part of the late night S&M Comedy Presents series at Space 55.  We also produce bunches of other kinds of bizarrely themed shows there every second Friday, so you should share this podcast with friends and bring some people out for Poetry Slim, October 10th at Space 55!  S&M Comedy Presents at Space 55 is always only a $5 donation to the theatre, and a BYOB show.  That is one helluva cheap night of ferociously independent comedy that just doesn't happen anywhere else.  Support local comedy.  Forealz.
Wednesday night at Hidden House Comedy, the first ever All-Old Material Night! Firmly established, well-rounded local comedians like Amy Blackwell, Anthony Desamito, Charlie Speez, Greg Freiler, Jonathan Glasser, Kirsten Alberts, Kristofer Royer, and Zed Phillips will revisit the vaults and trot out their material from their first 6-12 months of comedy! Material they've long given up on! Material they've tried to forget! Material that makes them cringe! All that will be on stage and in your ears, Wednesday, September 24th, at Phoenixes's Longest Running Independent Comedy Show! The awkwardness starts at 9pm, so grab a friend, grab a drink from Bartender Brian, and come lurk in the dark with us!
Get ready for the next S&M Comedy Presents...Poetry Slim!
Thanks for listening; keep coming out to shows and supporting the Live, Local, Historic, Eventful, Independent PHX Comedy Scene!

  • End of an Era: S&M Comedy at Monkey Pants, June 2011-Sept. 2014
Hey gang members!  Want some sad happy news?  Too fucking bad, here it is!
S&M Comedy is no longer running Thursday Night Comedy at Monkey Pants.  Sincerest apologies to those of you that were booked in the near future.  Sorry to say it, your booking is now dust in the wind.
We did a great job with Monkey Pants.  We can say it.  It was in utter disarray when we took it over, and we worked our asses off to make it good and make it right, and we did our best to keep it so over the past three years.  We learned so much.  The main things we learned are about consistency.  It's key.  No matter how much we've learned and how much work we've done (except promoting, we still suck at that) we've probably overstayed our welcome and our usefulness at the venue, and it's time to move on.  It's never pretty when it happens, but when it does happen, everyone has to decide whether or not they're going to make the best of it.  So!  Let's all choose to make the best, shall we?
Wednesday night at Hidden House, Bartender Brian will be making sure every whistle stays wet, because a raucous evening of comedy requires ample hydration!  We need you to come out and help us welcome headliner Ron Babcock on his Benz it Like Babcock Tour, and you'll also get to check out local comics Andy Steinberg, Adam Lark, Anthony Desamito, Ian Gilb, Lawyer Johnson, Michael Turner, Ryan Lawson, Zed Phillips, and super special guest host Aaron Kyle!  Phoenixes's Longest Running Independent Comedy Show starts every Wednesday at 9pm, so come lurk in the dark with us!
Thanks for listening; keep coming out to shows and supporting the Live, Local, Independent PHX Comedy Scene!

  • Episode 86: Fact Checkin’ with Matt Storrs
Hidee hidee hidee ho!  Time for a super swell comedy podcast interview radio-like talkshow podcast interview thingie!
Today's interview is with Matt Storrs!  Matt's style is dry and smart, clearly influenced by the British comedy on which he was raised.  He's also a very nice chap, a lawyer, and from what we hear, one hell of a baker, though he didn't bring us any cookies.  That's fine; we don't require cookies from interviewees.  It would just be nice once in a while.  *sniff*
After doing this podcast, we were able to get up to Rick Bronson's House of Comedy in far north Scottsdale.  We had a good time, got to meet Rick, eat some poutine, and check out Phoenixes's newest comedy club.  Pretty dope spot; you'll like it.  As dope as this interview?  Probably not.  Because it you could sum up Matt Storrs in a word, if would most assuredly be "dope."
Wednesday at Hidden House, Bartender Brian will be rocking the heavy pour as a cadre of corny comics comes to rock the mic, including super special guest host Gregory Freiler, headliner Glendon McGee, Adam Lark, Bill Losurdo, Gonzo, Heidi Geldis-Young, Marc Crossman, Michael Palladino, Negative Steve, Ryan Stalder from Los Angeles, and back from New York, one of the prodigious progenitors of PHX Independent Comedy, Ryan McKee!  Phoenixes's Longest Running Independent Comedy Show starts every Wednesday at 9pm, so shove some Mi Patio tacos in your face and come lurk in the darkness with us!
This Thursday at Monkey Pants, defeat boredom and inanity with an evening of comedy provided by super special guest host Jason Hill, MTV's Ryan McKee, as well as Adam Lark, Autumn Garza, Chris Centanni, Eric Sobczak, Glendon McGee, Lawyer Johnson, Maia Doty, Marc Crossman, and Tim Shostak, and an evening of $4 bacon wrapped deep fried hot dogs smothered in nacho cheese provided by the kitchen!  Absolutely free comedy begins at 8.30pm, followed by fish racing at 11, so get your ass in Pants!
Friday night, S&M Comedy Presents returns to Space 55 with another edition of This Day in History!
