Simple steps to overcome procrastination doesn’t necessarily mean they are easy steps. If they were easy, procrastination may not be in existence. We all would have conquered the monster.
Even though the steps outlined in this episode aren’t easy, you’ll find them to be helpful.
They are helpful because they are not new in the general sense. The steps will sound and / or even feel familiar. However, you might not have heard them in this context.
So what are the 3 steps?
Before outlining them, let’s briefly look at procrastination … what is it? How do you know if you are procrastinating. You’ll get more of an in-depth explanation by listening to the show, which I encourage you to do.
Simply put, procrastination is putting off things that you should be doing right now for other things that is more enjoyable and fun even if it is not a priority.
How do you know if you are procrastinating?
* filling your day with low priority tasks
* sitting down to work on something of importance only to go and do something else
* leaving an item on your todo list for longer than a day
* saying yes to doing for others so you don’t have to do what it is you need to be focusing on
* waiting to have the “feeling” to do what it is you need to be doing
These are just a few indicators that would suggest that you are more than likely procrastinating when you’re doing them.
You are necessarily procrastinating if you are doing something that you move up the todo list, which qualifies for more important. .
The 3 steps outlined to overcome procrastination are:
1. Acknowledge that you are procrastinating
2. Discover why you are procrastinating
3. Take one action step to stop procrastinating
To help with procrastination:
i) Examine the cost of procrastination
ii) Give yourself a reward for taking action
iii) Find an accountability partner
iv) Schedule a small task and do it to gain momentum.
If you are feeling like you are often procrastination, let me encourage you to take a major step today to change that dynamic. Follow one of the above action plans / ideas.
