Would you let a doctor perform surgery on you without reviewing and signing an agreement?

Just take a few seconds to answer that question. But then again, you probably did not even have to think about it. You knew your answer right away. 

There are several mistakes that we all make when we are starting and growing our micro and small businesses.

Some of those mistakes can be VERY damaging.

Think of that question that I asked at the beginning. We make sure to protect ourselves, so that's why we don't let a medical doctor perform surgery without an agreement. Yet, when it comes to our small businesses, many of us rush to do work with others without any agreements. 

For instance, are you using only verbal agreements with others that you are working with? Verbal agreements can be very damaging.

“I couldn’t grow my business because I kept pretending that it was doing fine” - that's something that I had to admit to so that I could grow my business. 

Think of the many times that people have asked you:

How are you doing?

How’s your business?

And then what do we say….

“I’m fine. My business is fine.”

When we really know that things are not fine. You’re not fine and your business is not fine.

But for some reason, we feel so compelled to say that things are fine

Why are we pretending?

Here’s my thought….

We are pretending because we don’t want to say out loud that we’re not fine because as soon as we say it, then that means we have to deal with it. So rather than deal with it, we pretend and deal with problems and issues alone, then before we know it, we are feeling burnt out. 

But it's possible for us to prevent burning out. There is a simple and easy support that we can get, but you might not realize that it’s available.

It’s hard to build and grow a business.

Any business!

So sometimes it can be so beneficial when we are a part of a group to help us to grow.

In my experiences in committees for professional organizations and working in schools and school districts of various sizes, I have seen the power of many.

Coaching is a great opportunity for you to get help, but sometimes, we may need to work in a group to get added perspectives.

Remember the quote that I started with “The power of the many exceed the power of one.”

So this where a peer advisory board can come in handy for you and your business.

There are several different types and levels of peer advisory board and I highly recommend that you research your options instead of picking the very first one that you come across.

17% of small businesses fail because they do not have a business plan

You might not think that number is high, but what if you were in that 17%. Looks different now, doesn’t it.

Have you thought about the plan for your business?

Seriously, you need to think about the plan for your business and actually write one out!

But having a written plan does not automatically mean that you are going to be successful. Because there are so many parts to the plan and we need to ensure that we are completing the research to include the relevant information into our business plans.

Having a plan helps out so much, more than what several micro and small business owners think. 

It helps with reducing some frustration and feeling overwhelmed. I’ll be talking about burnout and how to reduce it another podcast episode. Check the library for the episode. 

Through my company, I am on a mission to increase the number of small businesses that make it to 5 years and beyond. Helping business owners understand the value of a business plan is one of the ways that I want to support business owners in making it to 5 years and beyond.

Be honest, are you truly committed to seeing your business grow?

If so, think about the last time you learned something new to improve your business. How long ago was that?

Benjamin Franklin said that “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”

I enjoy learning.

As adults, I still believe that there is so much for us to learn and apply.

Especially, if you are an entrepreneur or small business owner or even if you call yourself an Independent Business Owner.

The point is that so long as you are starting and growing a business a side-gig or full-time, education is and should be a part of the process.

Speaking of which, I was reading an article from Forbes. In that article, it mentioned that having no commitment to learning is a reason why some entrepreneurs and small business owners fail.

Being an entrepreneur is not an easy thing. There are tons of things that we have to and need to learn.

That doesn't mean that you have to get caught up with shinny object syndrome. You still need to be strategic in what you’re learning.

As business owners, founders, and entrepreneurs, we are constantly looking at how we can improve our business so that we can continue to work towards the goals in our strategic plans. Here are two questions for you to think about: 

Do you make changes in your business just because or do you have a plan of when to make the changes?

Are you using shiny object syndrome to make changes so you can keep up with the latest and greatest thing?

These are questions that we need to be asking ourselves AND answering. The reason being that the answers that we have to those questions will give us more than we might be expecting. Those answers can help us solve some problems that we are stuck on right now. 

Having a business is not the same as having a SUCCESSFUL business!

Let’s be honest. If you’re one of those people who find their business draining and frustrating then it is very likely that you are missing the “when” of your business.

You could be missing other aspects of your business but in this episode, I'm going to be focusing on the "when" of our business.

As a Strategic Business Coach, I have met several people who are dreaming of having their own business or they told me about the business they tried to start, but it failed. 

Then I have met entrepreneurs who are running their own business by they are not happy with how it is doing. For many of them, they started their business on the side while they were still working full-time for someone else. Then years past and they become frustrated because they still can't stop working for someone else because their business is not growing. 

A big reason for that failure is not understanding how to grow their business. They were so focused on starting it (as in getting an LLC) and a website and their unrealistic plan, that they end up failing.
