Dawn has over nine years clean and sober and she shares her personal recovery story with us. She also tells us how the whole family is affected by alcoholism/addiction which manifests in different ways (dysfunction) and sometimes even skips an entire generation.  

We learn about several different 12 step recovery programs outside of the most often talked about programs for alcoholics and addicts. Dawn takes us through the 20 Questions asked when deciding if the program for ACOA might be something for family members to consider.

Erika and Frank are the founders of We Are Those People which is a 501 C3 Nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the narrative of addiction recovery through sharing stories of hope in our community. They are recovering loudly so others don’t die silently. They educate through storytelling and film, and advocate for Mental Health Care reform.

Take a trip with us to Dallas Texas where we talk with Curt who celebrated one year clean and sober on Nov 19, 2020

Curt started drinking at the age of 14 and grew up in the old school punk rock and skateboard scene. His drinking and drugging took him through many phases that included all the party drugs like acid, ecstasy, mushrooms and cocaine. He tried pretty near everything over the years until he grew out of that and found himself drinking daily while he worked unsupervised and hid it from his family.

That all changed a little over a year ago when his wife caught on to what he was doing and gave him an ultimatum. Curt has since changed his habits and behaviors and his life is immersed in recovery. He is the founder of Skate Straight where he shares the recovery message to a very diverse crowd of skate boarders, chefs, musicians, straight, gay, trans gender and sober curious.

His family like many others comes from the old school thinking of not talking about issues past or present. If you are depressed, get over it. Rehab is for quitters and if I had a drinking problem I certainly wouldn't tell anyone about it.

Curt has changed everything in his life and is speaking his truth openly about his addiction and alcoholism. He is on a mission to raise awareness and tear down the stigmas making it easier to talk about the disease of alcoholism and addiction.

Curt likes many different types of music and because he's old (his words) he likes what he likes.

Please join us in this episode as we have a casual conversation with our good friend Lyer in Southern Ontario. Jump into a chat between addicts who were once party monsters together many years ago and found each other again in recovery.

In this episode we talk about the feelings of powerlessness when someone we love goes back out (drinking and using again). How we can not save people and force them into a life of sobriety and that this has to be a decision made by the addict or alcoholic.

We also discuss some of the suggestions in early recovery and why it is advised not to make any major decisions in the first year of getting clean and sober. Including dating, relationships, sex and emotional stability or lack there of.

In this episode we head to Southern California to visit with Lori Massicot who tells us of what it was like for her getting sober just over 7 years ago.

She takes us back to the night her and her husband went out to see a Kid Rock Concert and while completely wasted she realized that she couldn't go on drinking like this anymore.  Something had to change. 

Lori tells us about her decision to quit drinking forever, the difficulties she faced and how her recovery journey began. 

She shares some good advice on getting sober and we discuss the importance of being able to talk about alcoholism, talking openly with your children, the need for family support and how finding your community in sobriety is crucial.

Now Lori works with men and women to encourage aging with grace and a life of sobriety. She is the host of her own podcast called "To 50 And Beyond" where she covers many areas relating to aging, sobriety and awareness.

Take a trip to Anchorage Alaska with us to visit Kaylen who shares her experience, strength and hope with us.

She tells us that in her active addiction overdosing on a regular basis became the norm for her.  One day Kaylen was at a party in a hotel room and overdosed once again. When she came to everyone that was there had gone leaving her for dead and some of them even ransacked her on the way out.

Kaylen tells us that in her opinion there is no casual use of heroin or meth or any drugs for that matter. She openly shares her story with us in hopes that someone out there does not go to the lengths that she did before realizing they may have a problem.

Today Kaylen has transformed her life and helps women and children with issues of substance abuse. She is able to help another alcoholic or addict because of her own past and in depth understanding of addiction.

In this episode we talk about having fun in sobriety and share some tips that we use when going to bars, concerts and festivals while living a clean and sober life. 

Kaylen's favorite  genre of music is Indie and her fave  groups are Modest Mouth and Death Cab For Cutie

This is part two with Michael G. who is celebrating one year being clean and sober.

In this episode Michael continues telling us his story and how after years of being in and out of detox, treatment centers and recovery programs he finally found his way. He tells us what it took for him to finally walk away from a life of crime, sex and addiction.

He share some great advice from his own experiences in treatment centers and how relationships with the opposite sex can really be detrimental in the beginning of any ones recovery journey.

Today on October 18th 2020 a very incredible man in Huntington Beach celebrates One year living clean and sober. His name is Michael G. and he is eager to share his journey and be of service whenever he can. 

Michael started drinking at the age of eight years old and grew up in a rough neighborhood where he wasn't easily accepted due to his origin and being half Mexican. 

He started hustling drugs at a very young age and was up against his first charges at only thirteen years old.  He was in and out of jails and was declared a menace to society at the age of fourteen. Michaels ultimate plan in life at that time was jail where he earned his stripes and respect.

Michael spent many years running around with gangsters in Oakland and tried filling the void in his life with drugs, crime, alcohol and sex. He has been in and out of court ordered and voluntary treatment and detox centers his entire life and now he has a brand new mission.
