Let me take you behind the scenes of Fiercely Freelance in 2022. In this final episode of the podcast for the year, I share a frank account of my year, reviewing and reflecting on my business journey including the lessons and the wins along the way. 

2022 was very much a year of two halves – in January my main client gave notice on our retainer and I spent the first half of the year scrabbling about for cash. By July, I’d taken on some part-time work to get my business back in the black, and since, have started to book more and more clients! 

I’m finishing the year feeling extremely happy for everything that the year taught me, and confident in the knowledge that I’m exactly where I need to be (and want to be) going into 2023.

How comfortable are you with doing your accounts? My guest on the show this week is the fabulous Mary O’Brien, a qualified UK accountant who specialises in helping small businesses and self employed people feel empowered by their numbers instead of intimated. 

After 17 years working in corporate, freelancing and running a creative business, she started Pink Opal to reach people who feel that their finances are frightening, and accountants are judgemental, boring men in suits who talk in another language! One of the best things about freelancing is of course the fact that you get to work from anywhere, right? But all too often that can be at home, by yourself, five days a week 😕 Whilst the freedom and flexibility of freelancing can be alluring, it can also be a very isolating and confusing time – as experienced by my guest this week, Jess Berry, who became self-employed around five years ago. 

Noticing her need for community and connection, Jess began organising informal meet ups with other freelancers in coffee shops and before long, established a co-working club for women in her local area of Nottingham. 

During the pandemic, Jess switched the club online and has since opened a beautiful co-working space in the heart of Nottingham where she hosts regular co-working sessions for self-employed women as well as networking events, workshops and activities.

It was so lovely to chat to Jess about her journey and her experiences in building a community from scratch, including how she pivoted through the pandemic.

Jess’ journey has been one of dedication, hard work and true ambition to realise her big vision, and hearing her ups and down will I hope inspire you, too.

Do you find selling yourself a bit icky? Do you struggle to talk about your services and packages with ease, or find money conversations super daunting? In today’s episode I’m here to guide you through 7 ways to make selling more enjoyable as a freelancer – because the good news is, it can be fun, exciting and super easy!

One of the things about freelancing which no one really talks about is the fact that as well as running your business and servicing clients, you also need to learn how to sell yourself and what you do.

This can be super challenging if you’ve never sold anything before or find talking about money awkward. But if you want to book in regular clients and make money, you need to get comfortable with selling.

With practice, I believe that anyone can become a great sales person! But you need to embrace the process – go outside of your comfort zone and do things that feel a bit cringey or uncomfortable at first in order to develop your sales technique.

In this episode I walk you through 7 ways to make selling that bit more enjoyable for yourself, and easier too, including:

1. Why you need to do your research – you need to know as much as possible about your dream clients, so that you can speak to them, about their problems and their goals, with absolute certainty that you’re on their level
2. How to create a product or service that people actually want - selling becomes easier when the offer or package that you’ve created solves a specific challenge or desire that your client has
3. Why packaging and pricing is crucial – positioning your offer will help attract the clients that you want to work with, and repel those that aren’t the right fit
4. Why you need to believe in what you’re selling in order to sell it effectively – why your confidence in your own product and service comes first
5. The truth about cold selling and rushing the sale – the pitfalls to avoid if you don’t want to feel like an icky car salesman
6. How to ask for the sale without it being sleazy – and why this is the key to your success in business
