Autonomous drones. Mass harvesting of personal data. And almost no regulations. More than four decades
after The Terminator first hit theaters, director James Cameron is once again sounding the alarm—this
time, not as a filmmaker, but as a concerned global citizen. In a recent interview with CTV News, Cameron
warned that the very AI-driven military technology he imagined in his 1984 classic is edging dangerously
close to reality. His concerns align with a 2023 United Nations report citing the rise of lethal autonomous
weapon systems (LAWS) being developed in at least
nine countries.
With AI-powered drones already having operated in conflict zones without direct human control, Cameron
sees the international failure to regulate such technology as a recipe for disaster. “We could be building the
tools of our own destruction,” he said.
While Cameron remains deeply worried about AI's potential to destabilize global security, he's more
cautious than fearful about its place in the creative world. In the film industry, AI tools are increasingly used
for editing, visual effects, and scene planning, but Cameron insists that storytelling still demands a human
touch.
“It can replicate the structure, but not the soul,” he said, adding that no machine can yet match the
emotional depth and intuition of a skilled screenwriter. Until an AI wins an Oscar for Best Screenplay, he
quips, he's not worried about being replaced in Hollywood—but on the battlefield, his concern is far more
urgent.
