The morning begins with the caw of Blue Jays & American Crows accompanied by the songs of White-throated Sparrows & Carolina Chickadees along with House & Goldfinches, Dark-eyed Juncos, Tufted Titmice, Carolina Wrens and Northern Cardinals. Adding to the ambiance are the occasional resonant drops on the raindrum as morning dew falls from the roof.

January 21, 2025 Sandhill Cranes over the Tupelo Swamp
Recorded on January 17, 2025, in the Tennessee River Watershed at Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, this is the sound of thousands of Greater Sandhill Cranes as they move into morning feeding sites. Set in the oxbow wetlands carved by the Tennessee River along Flint Creek, between Crabtree and Dinsmore Sloughs, the recording features the Cranes' chortling and bugling as they lift off and fly over a tupelo swamp on their way to feed in nearby farm fields. From the swamp's edge are the sounds of the Canada Goose, Carolina Chickadee, Eastern Phoebe, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Tufted Titmouse, Common Grackle, Northern Cardinal, Blue Jay and American Crow. In the background is the distant hum of traffic from Point Mallard Parkway and the faint, mournful wail of a passing train whistle.

Recorded on January 10, 2025, at the Heart Place, this is the rare sound of snow in the hill country as Winter Storm Cora drops half a foot of snow in the pasture. You'll hear the sound of snow falling from the Way Out West Deck as winter birds including a large mixed flock of Common Grackles, Red-winged & Rusty Blackbirds move from the ground to the towering blackjack oaks. Joining in on the chorus are the melodies of White-throated, Chipping & Song Sparrows along with Purple, House & Goldfinches, Dark-eyed Juncos and Blue Jays. This delicate recording is best appreciated in a quiet setting.
