Spark My Muse

Today, are some insights from the book "The Time Paradox: The new psychology of Time that will change your life", (by Philip Zimbardo and John Boyd). I learned about this book through Derek Sivers and his amazing book notes.

We misperceive time and reality depending on our habits of time-focus.Feeling anxious and threatened gives us a misperception of time itself.

Today, I'm delighted to introduce you to Phuc Luu (pronounce his name- Fōō Lēw). Born in Southern Vietnam, Phu escaped with his family after the war, when he was young, and grew up in Houston. He is a theologian, teacher, podcaster, and artist. His book "Jesus of the East: Reclaiming the Gospel for the Wounded" has opened my eyes to a kind of Asian Christian Liberation Theology that adds much richness to my understanding of what God is up to. It's must-read! Listen to our important conversation.

Today, I'm reading an excerpt from John O'Donohue's gorgeous, instant classic from 1997, Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom. The eternal is nearer to us than anything; just as the most familiar can be, or become, the most unknown. Let us pierce the facade of the familiar in order that we don't grow deadened.

Today, I'm reading some excerpts from Parker Palmer's classic Courage to Teach. Using his wisdom to give insights for our times, I want to expand how we consider each other, communicate and move forward through the challenges of our times. Objective knowing is inert and leads to objectification and distance—there are better ways.

As co-founder of Amahoro Africa Kelley Nikondeha was curator for the theological conversations among Africans and Westerners. With the Biblical text and African context in view, they explored economics, environmental matters, racism and reconciliation among thinkers and practitioners. At present, she the co-director of Communities of Hope, a community development enterprise in Burundi where she shapes the theological foundation of the work and pushes for deep congruence between the Biblical thinking and development practices.

Today, we are exploring her book Defiant: What the Women of Exodus Teach Us about Freedom. In the pages of this book, Kelley presents a fresh paradigm for women, highlighting a biblical mandate to join the liberation work in our world and helps us all learn how to proclaim salvation oracles.

Today, I'm reflecting on the stages of grief and the feelings of falling apart that are more common at this stage of the pandemic time of seclusion. I'm inviting us to look to the spiritual insights of our siblings of the American Black Church and the contemplative practices of embodied lament that are a testament to their spiritual nourishment and survival under the horrific institution of slavery and continual mistreatment and injustice endured since the African diaspora of the 1450s. I am reading passages from Barbara A. Holmes powerful work Joy Unspeakable: Contemplative Practices of the Black Church.
