  • Libya: Slavery, Migration, and Conflict
CNN's footage of slave markets in Libya disturbed and outraged the world, as it should. It's an image we all want to be in the past. But while underground, slavery and slave auctions still exist. Migrations flows and trafficking in Libya are nothing new, though continued conflict in a failed state has greatly exacerbated the situation. Hosts Seth Daire and JJ Janflone talk about the recent conflict, displacement, trafficking, and how all that has created a situation where slave markets can be found in Libya.

  • What Surprised Us About Slavery and Trafficking
Seth and JJ talk about what surprised them as they began to learn about slavery and trafficking. Though more can and should be done to end slavery, which has been continually with us, chattel slavery was ended in England at a time when slavery was an accepted norm that it was foolhardy to fight. Things can change through the efforts of many everyday people, as it did when England ended slavery within its empire in 1833.

  • Are Inmate Firefighters Trafficked by the State?
Over 1,700 inmates firefighters joined professional firefighters to stop the recent wildfires in Northern California. They are part of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) Conservation Camp program, and make up a third of all firefighters in California, saving the state over $80 million, while being paid $2/day and between $1-2/hour. Seth Daire and JJ Janflone discuss what's good, and exploitative, about this program.

  • Stealing Babies for International Adoptions
After giving an update on the status of the refugee ban, hosts Seth Daire and JJ Janflone discuss international child laundering, where young children are illegally taken from their parents and given to parents in another country without the new parents being aware the child still has parents who want their child. They discuss the story recently shared by Jessica Davis, and also share a story written by Scott Carney in his book, The Red Market.

  • How Disasters Increase Vulnerability to Trafficking
With four hurricanes hitting the United States recently (and other parts of the world), many people are in vulnerable positions due to loss of communication, infrastructure, water, homes, and jobs. Seth Daire talks about the negative rhetoric in the US relating to Puerto Rico. JJ Janflone then goes deeper into how disasters make people vulnerable to human trafficking.

  • Rohingya: Forced Migration and Trafficking
Over 400,000 Rohingya are being forced to migrate from Myanmar. Hosts Seth Daire and JJ Janflone explain the context and how this makes the Rohingya, a stateless population, even more vulnerable. Rohingya have previously been subject to human trafficking while migrating, and International Organization for Migration noted that hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims who have fled violence in Myanmar are “at the mercy” of human traffickers.
