The fastest, most honest and most efficient way to break free of the past is the remind ourself, the present moment is truly the only moment that will ever exist. When we think of the past and it's impact on us, we are doing that in the present moment. Whatever we create with our mind is what we are experiencing right now. If we are engaging in thinking about the past, that thought and attention create the experience of having a past in the present moment.

While this may seem a novel way of thinking, it is nevertheless true. We can all recall times when we've had our experience of life change in an instant. That's because what our mind was focused on changed in an instant. Our mind creates with it's attention. Whatever we pay attention to becomes our reality. That's why mantras work.

Right now, I'm in the process of trying to run for public office. This is something I would have been too afraid to do in the past. Now, that I'm increasingly accepting that the present moment is all that exists, I am experiencing greater freedom to do what I'm inspired to do and less constrained by fear. I am enjoying the process of applying to be a candidate. That joy is where all the value exists. The joy isn't dependent on my success or failure as a candidate. It exists independent of outer circumstances. That's real freedom.

Our thoughts create our reality. The more we understand what our thoughts are, the better our thinking becomes; the more we create what we consciousy desire. Whenever there is stress there are conflicting thoughts in our mind. The optimal way to deal with financial stress is to write down the competing thoughts. Then, decide to act on the thought that is the most uplifting.

My father grew up during the depression and was very conservative about money. Every time he could he put another $1000 cash in his safe deposit box. He referred to that money as "soldiers". He viewed the money as protection against unforseen financial problems. That's the environment I grew up in; don't spend money unless you absolutely have to. That became my default.

That thinking has come up against the thinking, "I owe it to myself to do my best to make my life all it can be". At times that means investing in myself; spending money I don't absolutely have to. When I look at these competing thoughts, I find joy in acting on the thought "I owe it to myself to give myself a chance". I feel love when I decide I'm worth supporting.

I've found great solace in the thought, "I could take failing in creating the life I dream of much more easily than I could take not trying."

The creative power of our mind is virtually unlimited. Most of that power is cancelled out due to uncoscious internal conflict. We can reduce that conflict, therefore releasing more of the power of our mind, by being consciusly accepting of that conflict. When we're aware of the conflict, we can choose which of the conflicting thoughts we act on. That is true freedom. That is self mastery and power over ourself.

I believe in leading by example. There is internal conflict I'm currently working on healing through acceptance. One of my thoughts is that the most responsible thing I can do is to limit my actions to actions that are uplifting. That means refusing to act on any thought that doesn't have an uplifting emotion as part of it. I have a conflicting thought that I need to be doing something regardless if it's inspired uplifting behavior or desperate fearful behavior. These thoughts are battling for my attention and behavior. The more aware I am of the confict, the easier it is for me to choose to only act on uplifting thoughts; thoughts that have joy, love, peace, enthusiasm and other uplifing emotions as part of them.

Karma is best understood as a reflection of our thoughts.

If I'm kind, it's because I'm choosing to act on loving thoughts. The more I act on loving thoughts, the more love I experience. Some people interpret the reflection of our thoughts and the behavior they create as karma.

Whatever thoughts we consistently act on create our reality.

That's why it's so important to consciously choose the thoughts we act on. I consistently have the thought that the solution to every problem is for me to be more honest and accepting of myself. That's led me to meditate daily in order to become more conscious of my thoughts and thereby be able to consciously choose which thoughts I act on. The more honest I am with myself, the more I believe and relate to the fact that I create my world.

Money is a tool that is to be used to maximize our experience of love, joy, peace and other emotions we want more of in our life.

It's a mistake to hold back spending on things that enrich our life just as it's a mistake to spend money out of fear, jealousy or any other thought that has an emotion tied to it that we don't more of in our life.

I find it easier to spend money caring and supporting my wife than on myself. I know that is a mistake. I should be willing to support myself just as I support my wife. It's a challenge. I'm working on it and making some progress. I've joined a tennis club and enjoy it a great deal. I'm spending on promoting my business in a way that I enjoy. I often go to lunch with my friends. I know that as a matter of self respect I need to be increasingly aware of ways that I can spend money that create greater joy and upliftment in my life. I'm working on it...

Forgiveness is what allows us to move forward. We need to not only forgive others, we need to forgive ourselves.

Every difficulty and all the stress in our life we have caused for ourself. To move forward we need to forgive ourselves. To do that we first acknowledge what we've been doing to cause ourself difficulty. Then we need to understand how and why we've done that. Once we've extracted the learning from the situation, we're in a position to move on and let the old behaviors go.

As is my normal practice, I'll endeaver to provide a real time example from my life.

I've created money and relationship stress in my life because I believed I needed that stress as motivation to grow spiritually. I've taken on big challenges in an effort to "get the most out of myself". Over the past years I've been focused on willingly learning and growing without relying on outer problems to force me to focus on my growth. I'm ready to take another step in that process. I think a next step might be in allowing myself to receive and benefit more from help I've created in my life.

Clearly I need to spend more time and attention on becoming aware of the thoughts that are creating that stress. One of those thoughts is "I need the stress as a motivator". I'll know when I've extracted the learning from the situation when the stress is gone and I can confidently move forward in finances and relationships. I'm not there yet, and am making progress.

Whenever we have internal resistance it's a sign we have conflicting thoughts. We know this because thoughts create our emotions and resistance is an emotion.

The solution is to slow down and listen until we become aware of the competeting/conflicting thoughts.

Here's a real time example from my life.

On the one hand I have the thought I need to engage in marketing to generate revenue and expand my acceptance of being deeply connected. On the other hand I know the only marketing that has ever worked for me is to be myself. Being myself means acting on uplifting thoughts. Being myself means being present. In being myself, I've always had enough money.

As you can see, taking the time to become aware of the competing thoughts makes it clear which thought is more uplifting and likely to enrich my life the most.

Depression is a sign that there is currently the ability to listen to and accept ourselves more fully.

We get depressed when we deny negative thoughts. When we slow down and accept the existence of negative thoughts, we introduce a greater level of choice in our life. Being conscious of negative thoughts allows us to investigate them and see if the thoughts are true or not. In my experience, the thoughts are rarely true. In those instances where the negative thoughts are deemed to be true, they point to actions I need to take to avoid problems. The vast majority of the time, the negative thoughts are not true. By accepting their existence and choosing not to act on those thoughts, it makes room for positive and true thoughts to arise.

When we deny the negative thoughts, they control us. That's why I wrote the book, "Negativity, what we deny controls us"

Acceptance is healing. Negative thoughts are healed by accepting. their existence. With that acceptance and the choice not to act on the negative thoughts, they lose their power. They still exist, but with very little power.

I have effectively dealt with depression by slowing down and listening for the previously denied thoughts that are causing the depression. I still get depressed, and I know how to deal with it.
