We're slowly learning a little more about the lore of this universe, and we get to see just how specialized and secret the Gardener faction of the Consultants is. Lucan, as it turns out, is a rare badass with his reading abilities, while Shera is in a different league from everyone else by virtue of her attitude if not her lack of empathy. Meia, on the other hand, struggles to keep up despite never being willing to quit. It must really suck being Yala's kid.

These chapters we get to see more of how the Gardners get trained and how the Consultants are set up. Apparently Gardeners are pretty rare, judging by the reception that Shera gets when it's assumed she's going to be a Mason. I really enjoy the names for all these positions, and I'm super curious to learn more about the lore of this place and how the hell the magical system really works.

In these first chapters we meet Shera, who is a sleepy sociopath with a penchant for murder. Our introduction to her is really high-impact as we get to see not only her cold, ruthless side but also her protectiveness of people who grow to mean something to her.
We also get our first look at the Elder Empire and at this point I'm not sure why it's called that but it seems like all the Elders are gone? I'm not sure.

Anyway. I loved this book but also I'm still mad at Will Wight and I think I need some time before I'm ready to forgive.

So these are the ones that were probably the toughest to get through in terms of the way the story and action dragged on. They had their bright spots here and there, but mostly I was left feeling frustrated and wanting to move on.
