Cowin Ray has made tremendous recovery from his drug addiction, and the 26-year-old soft-spoken boxer has crowned his new chapter in life by winning the South African super middleweight belt, which will be at stake against Andile Mntungwa in Fourways next Thursday evening.

Athletes wishing to be part of this year’s Comrades Down Run will be able to secure their spot in a week’s time when the second entry window period for the 95th Comrades Marathon opens on Wednesday, 20 April 2022 at 10am. The process will run until 16 May 2022.

Guest on the line: Similo Dlamini –South African Para Surfing Champion

 

This year’s event was all about the newcomers coming in and giving the experienced surfers a run for their money.

 

It was wonderful to see the young stars coming up the ranks from the adaptive surfing programme to surf in their first contest and absolutely dominate with Mthembu and Similo Dlamini taking the win in their respective women’s divisions.

 

Guest on the line: Joburg-based advertising entrepreneur, Bongani Chinkanda,

Malawian-born and raised entrepreneur, Bongani Chinkanda, aims to put the spotlight on the realities of anxiety and depression as he attempts to cycle 160km on a gravel road from Hartbeespoort  to Sun City in May this year.

Chinkanda, who was schooled in Harare, Zimbabwe before completing a degree at Rhodes University in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown) in the Eastern Cape, has launched his R160 000 in 160km Back A Buddy campaign, which he aims to achieve on Saturday 7 May 2022.

After suffering from acute depression and anxiety in 2015 and 2016, Chinkanda’s idea for the race attempt was born after he enlisted to undertake his first Ultra-marathon this year - which is 160km – in the Race to the Sun event.

"I thought why not cycle for R1000 per km, hence R160k in total. I am hoping the campaign will raise awareness around depression & anxiety especially for professional black males,” shares the cyclist and marathon enthusiast.

Having already raised R10 000 for the campaign, Chinkanda says that “every amount counts” and is appealing to the public to support this worthy cause.

Guest on the line: The Little Optimist Trust founder, Greg Bertish

 Local NGO The Little Optimist Trust has received international recognition and a grant of almost half a million rand (27,500 euros) from the Paris 2024 Olympics, in association with the French Development Association.

The Trust, started by big wave surfer Greg Bertish, is the only South African organisation out of 10 bodies recognised for their work in sustainable development through sport in Africa. The other recipients are from Ghana, Uganda, Rwanda, Madagascar, Senegal, Togo and Tunisia.

 Guests on the line – Former South African tennis player, Annette van Zyl

Former South African tennis player, Annette du Plooy, received the ITF Award for Services to the Game during the Tuks International (ITF $60,000 World Tennis Tour) at TuksTennis, University of Pretoria on Sunday, 3 April 2022.

During the mid-1960s, du Plooy was ranked in the top ten female globally and in 1966 she won the French Open Mixed Doubles title with Frew McMillan, defeating Ann Haydon-Jones and Clark Graebner in three sets.

In 1972, her coaching career began after completing coaching courses offered through LTA while living in England. She completed further coaching certificates under Reeve Hudson and quickly reached Professional Coaching Level.

 

The 78-year-old successfully went on to coach players individually and managed national teams at international events.
