Ferguson, who became the first person to swim around Rapa Nui (Easter Island), also made history in 2017 becoming the first woman from the African continent to complete the 46km Kai’wi Channel between the Hawaiian islands of Oahu and Molokai.

Now, she is planning to take on a 1 500km swim along the coast from Durban to Cape Town aptly dubbed the One Ocean Swim to raise public awareness around plastic pollution.

This year marked the third year that the Online Championships has been held, with editions to be held in Gauteng, KZN, Free State and the Eastern Cape throughout the year.

Colin Webster, president of MSSA, said: “Online events are not as controlled as our LAN events. They are far more difficult to monitor. One big advantage is that anybody around the country can participate and we encourage schools/clubs affiliated with MSSA to get their teams together to play.”

Ashleigh Moolman Pasio has announced that she will retire at the end of the 2022 season, drawing to a close what will be a 13-year professional career.

The South African, who turned 36 in December, made the announcement during the SD Worx team presentation on Wednesday afternoon, adding that it was a tough decision to make as she feels like is still progressing in the sport.
