They say that the Masters doesn’t begin until the back nine on Sunday. But for about 40 percent of the field, the Masters ended on the back nine on Friday. As second-round play concluded at Augusta National, the field was pared to the top 50 players and ties when the cut settled at four-over-par 148.

Some of the eliminated were expected; amateurs and sixty-something former champions can’t be expected to keep up with the best in the world. But a field this strong means that inevitably there will be some terrific golfers headed home on the weekend. Here are 10 surprising pros who missed the cut, ranked in ascending order of just how surprised we’ll be to miss them this week.

Ross Garrett teamed up with his school friends in 2018 to make a difference in underprivileged communities when he was in primary school. They set up Play It Forward Jozi to make a difference in South Africa.

The boys decided to collect second-hand sporting equipment that could be sent to underprivileged children, schools and sporting clubs. They started collecting takkies and sports shoes, racquets, bats, hockey sticks, golf clubs, gloves and balls.

Over the years, they have kitted out many teams, including Central Joburg Blind Cricket, Alexandra Hub Cricket Club, and many more! Ross’s mother, Alison Garrett, has played a vital role in managing where the donations go, connecting the collections with the people who need them most.

The men’s race was equally as exciting as the race was frantic right from the start. A large group, including Pritzen, got clear early along the fast M3 section but got whittled down as they ascended Chapman’s Peak and finally Suikerbossie. By the time they reached the top of Suikerbossie Pritzen, Weber, Kruger and early animator Byron Munton had got clear with the peloton already out of the running. It is rare that a pro breakaway succeeds on the relatively short Cycle Tour route.

 In the final kilometre Munton opened up a tactical sprint and it was the tall figure of Pritzen that managed to pull through for a superb win.

The country's most prestigious drifting event Red Bull Car Park Drift is back this year on 09 April where the country's top drifter will come together to face off to crown another champion.

Professional boxing will return to the Sun City Superbowl in Rustenburg on Saturday, 9 April, as TLB Boxing Promotions has lined up a five-bout tournament, which forms part of the Celeb City Boxing Exhibition at the North West venue.

Headlining the tournament is a vacant South African junior-bantamweight title contest between Athenkosi Dumezweni and Lwandile Ngxeke. In his fight against Ngxeke from Sada in the Eastern Cape, Mthatha-born Dumezweni will be out to reclaim the title he once held in 2018.

After his win in 2021, the local hero has now won the event four times and is only
one behind the legendary Willie Engelbrecht for the highest number of wins in the
men’s category. Annriette Schoeman holds the record in the women’s event with
seven wins.
“Every year I try not to do much in the first half of the race and keep very quiet.
But there is no doubt that I have suffered on the climbs in the past. But my legs
are good this year so I’m feeling excited,” Hoffman said, who has won all of his
Cycle Tours in a spectacular sprint finish.

Durban paddlers Quinton Rutherford and Brett Hadiaris set a new Guinness World
Record for the longest distance paddled in a double surf ski in a 24-hour period
when they completed a brutal 219km paddle from St Lucia to Durban on Monday.
Rutherford, who recently set the equivalent Guinness World Record for a single
ski, and Hadiaris took advantage of the North Easterly winds and prevailing ocean
currents to better the previous mark of 194,1km, said Canoeing South Africa
spokesperson Dave Macleod.
