Thursday night NFL saw new Ram’s quarterback Baker Mayfield lead a comeback win over the Las Vegas Raiders. The extra point provided the margin of victory after a 98 yard drive capped by a pass from Mayfield to Van Jefferson with ten seconds left in a 17-16 Rams win. The win snapped a six game Rams losing streak.

The NFL schedule this weekend is a little light on local interest, with byes for both the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts. The Detroit Lions host the Minnesota Vikings Sunday at 1pm. And we’ll have the Sunday night game between Kansas City and Denver here on Sports Radio 960 WSBT.

Voters for the top tight end in college football this week snubbed Notre Dame standout Michael Mayer in favor of Georgia’s Brock Bowers, despite Mayer’s clear statistical superiority. Mackey Award voters rewarded Bowers in part because he plays for the number one ranked team in the nation going into the College Football Playoff. Mayer had more catches for more yardage and more touchdowns in 12 games than Bowers had in 13 games.

College basketball this weekend includes the 5th ranked Notre Dame women hosting Merrimack College tomorrow at noon on Live 99-9. The Irish men play Sunday at 4pm in Purcell Pavilion against Marquette. 3:30 is airtime on Sports Radio 960 WSBT.

Fifth ranked Purdue hosts Nebraska at 2:15, and 14th ranked Indiana is at home against 10th ranked Arizona at 7:30.

Notre Dame hockey is back on the ice this weekend, with a pair of home games against Penn State tonight and tomorrow. The puck drops at 7 tonight, 6 tomorrow on Quality Rock Z 94-3.

In the NHL: the Redwings lost at Florida 5-to-1. The Blackhawks host Edmonton at 8:30 eastern tonight in Chicago.

It came as no surprise, but Notre Dame fandom hoped it might not happen until star tight end Michael Mayer made it official yesterday and declared for the NFL draft. Mayer is projected as a high pick in April’s draft, and will skip Notre Dame’s Gator Bowl game against South Carolina December 30th to prepare and avoid the risk of injury. The shoe waiting to drop is pass rusher Isiah Foskey, who could well make the same decision as soon as today. With starting quarterback Drew Pyne now in the transfer portal, the Irish will be down several key players for the bowl game.

Irish men’s basketball looked good, then didn’t, as they managed a win over the Boston University Terriers last night at Purcell Pavilion. 81-75 was the final as the Irish improve to 7-and-2, with Marquette due in town to play the Irish on Sunday afternoon at 4 on Sports Radio 960 WSBT.

The Irish women’s game scheduled for tonight at Lafayette is postponed due to health and safety protocols. No makeup date announced yet.

In the Big Ten: 5th ranked Purdue beat Hofstra, 85-66. Number 14 Indiana downed Nebraska 81-65, and Michigan State over Penn State, 67-58. Michigan is at Minnesota tonight.

Chicago Cubs fans are in mourning, at least a bit this morning, with word that now-former Cubs catcher Willson Contreras will be behind the plate for the rival St. Louis Cardinals in 20-23. Contreras agreed to a five year free agent deal with St. Louis Wednesday.

The NFL Thursday night game this week is the Las Vegas Raiders in L-A against the Rams. Coverage at 7:30 tonight on 960 WSBT. Sunday, the Detroit Lions host Minnesota at one p-m. The Bears and Colts both have byes this week.

Notre Dame freshman cornerback Benjamin Morrison has been named a freshman All American by College Football News. Morrison started eight of Notre Dame’s 12 games this season, and led the team with five interceptions, including two in a home win over then-5th ranked Clemson November 3rd. The 21st ranked Irish will play number 19 South Carolina in the Gator Bowl on December 30th, here on Sports Radio 960 WSBT.

The Chicago Cubs have added a couple of free agents for the 2023 season. Former Dodgers outfielder Cody Bellinger will patrol center at Wrigley Field on a one year, 17 and a half million dollar deal. And right-handed pitcher Jameson Taillon joins the staff on a four year, 68 million dollar deal. Taillon joins Kyle Hendricks, Marcus Stroman, and Justin Steele in the Cubs pitching rotation. The Cubs are also rumored to be in on talks with several shortstops: Xander Bogaerts, Dansby Swanson, and Carlos Correa. And they’re rumored to be discussing a trade to bring A’s catcher Sean Murphy in if Willson Contreras does not re-sign.

In the NBA: The Detroit Pistons won at Miami last night, 116-to-96. Bojan Bogdanovic led with 31 points, and former Purdue standout Jaden Ivey added 10. Tonight, the Chicago Bulls host Washington at the United Center, and the Indiana Pacers play at Minnesota.

In Hockey, the Chicago Blackhawks took a 3-nothing loss at New Jersey. The Detroit Redwings won at Tampa Bay, 4-to-2.

Notre Dame will head to Florida later this month for the Gator Bowl against South Carolina with uncertainty about who will play quarterback and whether a few key players will skip the game to get ready for the NFL draft. Coach Marcus Freeman says quarterbacks Tyler Buchner, Steve Angeli, and Ron Powlus will each be ready to play, which many take to mean Buchner will start if he’s healthy enough, with Angeli as his backup. Drew Pyne, who started after Buchner went down with an injury in week two, is now in the transfer portal. Also undecided, whether tight end Michael Mayer and pass rusher Isiah Foskey will play as they prepare to leave for the NFL draft in the spring. Freeman says we should know more later this week. The 8-and-4, 21st ranked Irish face 8-and-4, 19th ranked South Carolina December 30th in Jacksonville, Florida here on Sports Radio 960 WSBT.

In the Monday night NFL game in Tampa, Tom Brady did it again, leading two touchdown drives in the final six minutes to tie the game, with the extra point putting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers over the top in a 17-16 win over the New Orleans Saints.
