Steve met Matthew Huff three years ago on social media. The hunters shared a love for tree dogs that brought them to a personal meeting at the 2022 Grand American Coon Hunt in South Carolina. Huff’s story is unique. It begins in California and moves eastward to Georgia. The catalyst for his mostly urban coon hunting activities came in the form of a mixed breed, mostly hound, with perhaps a shot of Treeing Walker dog named Sargeant. As his travels took him across the nation Huff continued to hunt the orphaned Sarge mostly by himself on public grounds and parks until a purebred Bluetick entered the picture. That’s were we find Huff today, treeing coons with regularity and assuming the more common role of hound and hunter with a traditional coonhound breed. Mentioning Huff as an urban coon hunter, he now lives in metro Atlanta. Activities inspired by the Orthodox Christian Church with whom he affiliates, have taken him to the mountains of West Virginia and to the Carolinas helping those in need, something that comes naturally to the humanitarian. This is an interesting episode that proves that hounds can lead us in many directions, some of which we may never had expected.

The Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast is back this week with a great episode and a great guest. The 2024-25 Oklahoma deer season has officially come to an end, and Levi Mayfield joins John to talk about their seasons. For Levi, John, and seemingly many others across the state, it turned out to be an odd fall this year. Not only were temperatures well above average for most of the fall, but it also seemed like there was a lack of big bucks to chase this season. Levi talks us through his season including tagging a good buck on public land, and just missing out on another really nice public land buck.
John had an interesting deer season as well. Even though he had access to more property than he ever had before, he really struggled to find a good deer to chase. After a heart breaking trip to Kansas and a missed opportunity on a really nice buck, John's Oklahoma season was pretty uneventful. That is until the last day of the season, when a last ditch effort and a whole lot of luck came together and John was able to arrow his biggest bow buck to date!

On this episode of Michigan Wild, Nate Rozeveld and Josh Arbogast sit down for a long awaited episode. Josh and Nate have been trying to record an episode for a few weeks, but with Nate's hectic schedule with being out of state and the holidays it finally came together. Josh is a passionate bowhunter that allocates his free time chasing whitetails at a high level. He really enjoys scouting and learning areas in the off season and always finds himself on a few out of state hunts each fall. Nate sees Josh as an Extreme Weekend Warrior, based on his effort. He will do multiple weekend trips far from home even in his home state chasing whitetails. He even built out an enclosed trailer to stay in and really enjoyed hunting out of it this fall. Another new thing this fall brought Josh was dedicating his season to one particular buck on public land in MI. The buck won this time, but Josh enjoyed the challenge and feels he has become a better hunter going into 2025.
After talking about Josh's style and progression as a bowhunter the guys dive into Josh's passion for improving the hunting opportunities throughout the whole state of Michigan. Josh actually started the facebook page Michigan Deer Hunters for Change with the intentions of improving the hunting in Michigan. Nate and Josh both agree that there is a dramatic difference in deer behavior and dynamic in other midwest states and believe hunting in Michigan can reflect those. However it takes us as hunters to be at the forefront of that change and not solely rely on the NRC or DNR to make those changes for hunters.

After a hard season comes to an end, Heath catches back up with George Lambert (Mountainmusicandmules) to discuss what they both saw this season. Hunting the same region a couple hours apart they both had similar experiences. Low food sources, seeming low bear numbers to young dogs running anything to would satisfy their urge to scorch the earth. George and Heath take it to the next level. Join us on What’s up Wednesdays.
