In this conversation, the guys talk all about Alaska and what can be expected on the upcoming hunt. Daniel shares all about his experiences growing up and chasing a variety of big game animals from the hills to the marshes. Daniel also shares insight on different strategies for hunting moose caribou and a number of other animals depending on the rut and timing within the season. Daniel tells stories of when he went in too deep on a hunt and spent 2 days packing a moose out from the backcountry. They both share about difficult packouts and how even though they are brutal they find themselves always wanting more difficult situations and adventures. In this episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch discusses his experience with bear scouting and hunting leading into the 2024 season. After a successful 2023 season, he is back in New Jersey for bigger and better things. There were many takeaways from last season, forcing Mitch to modify his preparation for an even better outcome this year. This includes the importance of scouting and finding food sources, as well as the need for fallback options and scouting for people pressure.
Finding food in summer is a start, but it's also crucial to continue to monitor as the season start to close in. Mitch shares the scale of land he is scouting both with cameras and boots-on-ground, and how he plans to choose stand locations for wind direction and lay of the land. The goals and outlook for this season are slightly different from normal: be patient, learn from your experiences, and set realistic expectations for the hunting season with the time that's available to prepare.

In this episode, I share the story of the last time I shot a Jake during turkey season. I also reflect on my journey as a turkey hunter and the lessons I have learned along the way. I talk about the importance of living in the moment and not judging a season based on a small sample size. I also discuss my experience with buying a new shotgun, the importance of knowing how your shotgun shoots and being confident in your pattern. I also recap getting permission to hunt a new piece of land, how hard that can be and how amazing it is to get new land to hunt. I had a great time reliving the highs and lows of these turkey hunts and the great memories I have from that season! It's a great reminder that hunting is more than the goal, it's about the memories and experiences we would never get doing anything else!

On today's episode, Jacob outlines how to discern between white and red oaks, and more specifically, some of the subtypes of white and red oak trees that cover different regions of the midwest, northeast, and southeast. As archery deer seasons begin to open across the country, identifying the hot oak flat for whitetails can translate into early season success. White oak flats specifically can be ideal areas for bucks to stage prior to coming to soybeans or corn, they can also serve as a primary food source on properties that lack agriculture. As the season moves on and other food sources wane, red oak acorns can be an option to target as well.

In this episode of the Antler Up Podcast, host Jeremy Dinsmore is joined by fellow PA hunter Travis Melochick to get into the nuances of hunting. They discuss the importance of fine-tuning your existing hunting areas instead of constantly chasing new ones, emphasizing that simplicity often leads to success. Travis shares his belief that while skill is crucial, luck also plays a significant role in hunting, and it’s vital to acknowledge and appreciate the unpredictability of the sport. The conversation touches on the value of humility, avoiding the pitfalls of overcomplicating your approach, and steering clear of hunting gimmicks that promise more than they deliver.
Jeremy and Travis also highlight the significance of enjoying the journey and the camaraderie that comes with hunting. They stress the importance of prioritizing family, ensuring that hunting doesn’t overshadow the meaningful moments in life. Understanding that each hunting area and deer herd is unique, they encourage listeners to focus on the little things, like meticulous scouting and fine-tuning specific spots, rather than searching for one-size-fits-all solutions. This episode is a reminder to cherish the experiences, the friendships, and the lessons that hunting brings, both in the woods and in life.

On this episode of The Wisconsin Sportsman, Pierce sits down with the lone wolf himself; Andrae D'Acquisto to talk all about the keys to consistently killing trophy bucks, hunting fresh sign, tactically pressuring deer, staying mobile, high-level thermal concepts, and above all else: hunting like a wolf
If there's any name out there that's practically synonymous with big deer, it's Andrae D'Acquisto, and for folks who haven't heard of him, he's the mind behind today's modern mobile hunting equipment and tactics. A Milwaukee-native, Andrae started building his own mobile treestands in his garage back in 1984 when he realized there was nothing else on the market that did what he needed it to do. Fast forward 40 years to today, and Lone Wolf Custom Gear is the leading name in mobile hunting.
Pierce and Andrae discuss Andrae's unique mentality when it comes to hunting giant deer, and contrary to what a lot of hunters will tell you, Andrae isn't afraid to shove a big buck around if he needs to in order to stack the deck in his favor. The guys talk about how crucial it is to stay mobile so that you're always in a "virgin spot" where deer have never encountered human presence before. After that, they dive into two thermal concepts you don't often hear about: thermal overflow and thermal creep, and after hearing Andrae's breakdown of each, you'll understand why that big one busted you last season. Lastly, the guys tease an upcoming episode all about the art of the Bump & Dump which will come out in part 2 of this conversation in a few weeks. All that and more in this week's episode!
