  • DIY Sportsman - Preseason Preparation List

In today's episode of the DIY Sportsman podcast, Garrett talks about some of the items you should do your best to check or do prior to the season actually opening. With some exceptions, your first tag might be starting as soon as three weeks from now. Or it might be a little less than two months if you have an October opener and aren't traveling. Regardless, it's right around the corner, and checking some of these items as soon as possible can help give you time to make any corrections prior to the season actually opening.

In the podcast, Garrett breaks down down key details regarding archery and gear checks, practicing with your climbing gear, double checking hunting properties even if you hadn't planned on glassing or using trail cameras prior to the season, and reviewing and analyzing the goals you've set for the season.

  • Nomadic Outdoorsman - Public, Self Filmed and With a Bow

On this episode of The Nomadic Outdoorsman Dan talks with Austin Stone, a public land bow hunter who’s passion takes him to several states in pursuit of mature whitetails.

Austin has been deer hunting for 20 years, and bow hunting for 17. His hunting has predominantly been on public land in Missouri but over the past few years he has branched out to multiple states including Iowa, South Dakota and Kentucky, with Kansas being added to the list this year. Last season Austin was able to harvest 3 mature bucks between Missouri and Iowa. As if that weren’t impressive enough it all self filmed, on public land, with his bow.

Austin owns Tactical Approach Outdoors which he built as a deer hunter education business, catering to folks that didn’t grow up in a hunting family, but want to get started later in life. He recently launched the Deer Hunter Academy, a massive online course which provides you with everything you need to know to be a successful deer hunter. It covers 23 topics, 40 videos and is over 5 hours of educational material. Austin also offers virtual one-on-one mentoring to go along with the course. Dan and Austin cover some of the tips and strategies that have helped Austin find success on public land as they gear up for the 2022 season.

  • How to Hunt Deer - How to Kill a Buck on Opening Day with Jake Bush

Archery openers for many states are just around the corner, and many hunters dream of an opening day buck. But the truth is, most hunters will go home disappointed with their dreams of giant antlers smashed to pieces by the reality of opening day's challenges. It really is tough to get on deer, let alone a good buck, on opening day. But it's not impossible. In fact, there are some guys who seem to tag out on opening day, or close to it, with impressive consistency. What can we learn from guys like that?

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Ohio-based big buck killer, Jake Bush about finding, and killing big bucks on opening day. Jake has had a ton of success finding, and killing, bucks very early in the season, often on opening day. Jake's tactics are start with bedding, but as you'll learn from this episode, a lot more goes into it. Jake covers how he locates bucks, how he anticipates shifts in early season patterns, and even how his hunting strategy would be different if he was a weekend warrior like many of us. Enjoy!

You can find some of Jake's hunts on his YouTube channel, Legends of the Hunt.

  • Average Conservationist - A First Trip w/ Shaun & Lila Durkee

Joining Marcus this week on the Podcast for a special episode of sorts are Shaun Durkee and his daughter Lila. Shaun and Lila recently participated in a weekend mountain goat survey in southwest Montana and are here to talk about their experience. This wasn't just a survey from the truck either, rather a 5.5 mile hike into the backcountry. For an experienced backpacker like Shaun it was pretty standard, but for young Lila it was no small feat. The two talk about their weekend adventure, the importance of surveys like this and why Lila probably won't tell her friends at school about it, because she doesn't want to brag. This is a fun conversation and a glimpse into what the outdoors looks like to the next generation of conservationists. Enjoy!

  • Houndsman XP - The Journey: Blood Trailing 101
As the days start to shorten and temps drop, we all know what that brings, DEER SEASON. Heath makes another trip to the Empire State to talk with good friend Jeremy Dicesare about blood tracking with hounds. Jeremy talks about what started his love for hounds and how this was an avenue to keep him in the woods after running season ended. Jeremy imported a Bavarian Mountain Hound from Slovakia. Heath and Jeremy talk about the strict breeding selection the BMH clubs have and how the club votes on whether a dog can be bred according to a set of tests the dogs have to pass. Heath references a lot of parallels between hunting hounds, his law enforcement deployments and animal recovery process. We are kicking off deer season right. Pull those boxes of stored hunt gear off the shelves, the Journey begins here.
