It's that time of year where the mind of a deer hunter slowly starts to become corrupted by the thought of chasing big bucks across the landscape. Velvet bucks are popping up on trail cameras and in fields all over the country and this can be a huge distraction, but in a good way.
On this UNFILTERED episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan gives us an update on how his summer prep is going. He talks about finally getting his trail cameras out, slacking on his tree stand locations, shooting his bow, and planning for his out-of-state hunting trips. He also complains about his kids.
Dan touches base on his expectation for the upcoming season and how his goals are on a sliding scale depending on the intel that he gets throughout the year and where as well as where he is actually hunting. Overall this is a fun episode that will be a little bit educational and a lot bit of fun. Enjoy!

There is something special about digging in the dirt, especially, when you know the dirt under your fingernails belongs to you. On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, we chat with Mike Daquilante about his experiences manipulating his 130 acre farm in western Pennsylvania. For 25+ years, Mike has been removing invasives, planting food plots, and trying to leave his property better than when he first purchased it. He loves to live by the motto, "it's not our's, it's just our turn."
While Mike surely enjoys his time in the field and has hunting strategies up his sleeve, that's not entirely what this episode is about. Instead, he discusses his success stories and learning experiences during that time. He also expresses the fulfillment of giving back. Mike has shared his property with family, friends, and youth looking to tag their first deer and turkey. It's a great reminder to not have blinders on during hunting season and to share the experiences we seek each fall.

We're joined by KC Smith this week on the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast. KC is a part of The Element, another excellent hunting podcast and YouTube channel. As we continue talking about Non-Resident hunting & prepping for out of state hunts, we thought KC might have some good advice on the subject. If you're familiar with The Element, these guys travel from Texas to a bunch of different states, particularly midwestern big buck states. One thing you'll also see regularly on their channel is planning to hunt another state more than just one trip a season. They invest a lot of time each season, and sometimes even years breaking down areas as non-residents. You're going to hear about that process, and a lot more in this episode.

On this episode of the Hunting Gear Podcast, Dan talks with Matt Drury of Drury Outdoors about their predictive deer movement app, DeerCast. DeerCast is based off of an algorithm that includes several weather data points like temperature, barometric pressure, and precipitation that updates hourly throughout the day that inform you on the best days and times to hunt. That, mixed with several years of deer hunting experience and deer behavior observation from Mark & Terry Drury. This is a really great conversation we are sure you will enjoy!

On this episode of the DIY Sportsman podcast, Garrett discusses results from an in-depth round of testing different arrow weights and speeds for hunting. These ranged from setups shooting over 315 fps down to setups shooting around 200 fps. Test data included energy and momentum readings both out of the bow and at 40 yards, time of flight to the target, bow noise, arrow noise, broadhead grouping with both fixed and mechanical heads, and range estimation forgiveness for misjudging yardage around 30 yards as well as 60 yards. With Garrett's setup, he learned that the "happy medium" arrow setup he had been using probably wasn't the optimal choice for whitetails.

Late July/early August is a great time to do some digital scouting and hang some stands. Understanding thermals and their impact on wind currents can help you take your scouting and stand sight selection to the next level. Thermals can make or break a hunt. Not only do they influence how deer move across the landscape, but hunting with thermals in mind can be the difference between you watching as a white tails bound off through the timber or you getting a chip shot at your target. But thermals can be tough to understand and predict.
In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Eric Ives of Red Bearded Predators for a little thermals 101. Eric hunts the hill country of southwestern WI, so he is no stranger to thermals, how they impact your hunting setups, and how deer use them to their advantage. Tune in to learn how to capitalize on thermals where you hunt!

Sitting down this week on The Average Conservationist Podcast is Dr. Sarah Marino. Sarah is the owner of her own practice, Marino Medica, located in the greater Austin, TX area. The two start the conversation off discussing Sarah's practice, what type of medicine she's practicing and the different approach she is taking to the Dr-Patient relationship. Sarah is hoping to build strong relationships with her patients, much like she grew up with, instead of a more transactional way that many of us have become accustomed to. Along with her desire to continually be learning, Sarah has also become passionate about the outdoors. Knowing the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle, it's easy to make the connection between her practice and conserving our wild places. This is a great conversation and if you're in the greater Austin area, you should definitely check out her practice.
