In this podcast Tim Russell (Green Fire Forestry & Wildlife Services) and Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) discuss the significance of chestnut trees and their benefit to wildlife. Tim details the history and science of chestnuts and how the landscape has changed as a result of the blight. Previously, chestnuts provided an economic and wildlife benefit that is important to our country and is now missed with the current whitetail deer herd. The value of the chestnut tree is something we have sometimes forgotten and can be a game changer on the landscape. Listen to the podcast to further understand the benefits and how this tree can benefit your deer herd.
Jon discusses his secrets to designing a property with chestnut trees in mind. Tim discusses the benefits of chestnuts versus acorns; the answer may surprise you! Jon asks Tim about planting non-native chestnuts and the impact on the landscape. Both contributors discuss the type of chestnuts (native, non-native, hybrid and transgenic) and the benefits of each and how certain organizations are working toward supporting a transgenic tree on the landscape. Jon discusses simple options to planting and how he approaches chestnuts and deer.
Tim discusses the best options going forward for those wanting to plant chestnut trees on their property, specifically the American chestnut. Tim and Jon break down the key factors for choosing chestnuts, and how to manage them on the landscape. Other important information and specifics as it relates to preferred soil type, environments and what not to do with chestnuts is explained in the podcast.

While turkey season is winding down for many states across the country, things are really heating up in Wisconsin. Despite poor weather conditions for the recent Season B, Josh and his buddy Pierce were able to get two birds on the ground. The best part is, they’re just getting started! Josh and Pierce will be teaming up in the coming weeks in pursuit of the Driftless triple crown: turkeys in the morning, morels during the day, and trout on the fly in the afternoon.
In this episode of the podcast, Josh and Pierce share the stories of their recent success. Josh was able to get it done just two hours into the season, and Pierce sealed the deal on a great bird just a few days later. Tune in to hear about stubborn field birds, spooking turkeys left and right, a not-so-great-sounding-box call, and of course the sweet taste of success. You can find more from Pierce at www.goodchanceflyfishing.com.

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick is joined by once again, John Wallace, a new Regional Director for Delta Waterfowl and as we know him, Wildgame Cook. John and Nick catch up since last being on the podcast, unpack some of the popular spring forage here in the Midwest, mushroom prep, and some incredible spring dishes that are packed with the flavor. This conversation will have you take an extra look at those green patches as you pass to your turkey spot, on this episode of Huntavore.
Nick is joined by John Wallace. Known on instagram as WildGameCook, John has also transitioned into a regional director for Delta Waterfowl. As this episode airs, it will be his first day at the job. Congrats and Good Luck John. Last time Nick was able to chat with John it was the height of the pandemic, so these two do a bit of catching up. All the kids are in sports and the family schedule is fast paced. But even so, John shares some great moments from hunting with his kids, like being a year of firsts for one of John’s boys.
The guys highlight spring forage here in the midwest. Easy key-able greens and mushrooms that can be used to make dishes pop. The highly sought after Morel and Ramp, to the humble Pheasant Back and Garlic Mustard.
John finishes up by talking about a dish that sums up spring perfectly. Turkey tenderloins topped with morel rings and garlic mustard pesto.

The boys from Bowhunting League are back for this episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast. Ben Harrison and Dan Porter are the brains behind the FREE nationwide archery contest known simply as the Bowhunting League. The BHL is made up of three person teams from all across the country that come together to compete for thousands of dollars worth of prizes, and did I mention that it's free to sign up?
Ben and Dan go into the details of the league and talk about all the different ways to get involved. They have a turkey competition, an elk competition, a one shot archery competition, and the main event, the deer competition. Dan and Ben also tell John some of the things they have learned since starting the league, like how there are big bucks all over the country that most people don't know about, and how to plan out a multi state year. This is a great lighthearted episode, which is a great representation of the league itself. When it all comes down to it, the BHL is about community and sharing the passion we all have for bowhunting whitetail deer.

On this episode of The nomadic Outdoorsman Dan talks with fellow Missourian and avid outdoorsman Nick Hoerchler about his passion for deer and ducks.
Nick is a 21 year old outdoorsman that is as addicted to hunting as a person can be. He grew up in Washington, Missouri where his grandpa taught him all about hunting from a very young age. In his first year bowhunting (12 years old) Nick only missed 5 total weekends throughout the season. He worked his way from hunting squirrels up to deer, turkey, and waterfowl. While hunting began as a family event for Nick it has evolved to include his girlfriend and friends that he made in college. Nick also grew up trout fishing many of Missouri’s rivers around Montauk and Bennet Springs state parks. He has been blessed to fish some of the rivers in Yellowstone National park as well. Dan and Nick discuss their obsession for chasing after animals all fall.

What seems to be the norm under private land is that more acres mean better hunting. It cannot be ignored that whitetails (and other wildlife) have a home range much larger than the size of the average Northeast parcel. But often, landowners complain about their inability to hold wildlife on their small property for the wrong reasons - efficiency. On this week’s episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch dives into the controversial topic of Agriculture, CREP, and how they often do not correspond with quality wildlife habitat.
Many people are in the market to buy a chunk of land to call home and have quality hunting opportunity. Let’s make a case you are looking to purchase land in a mixed agricultural area. Now ask yourself which of these scenarios are better: 1) purchase the largest property you can afford but be forced to rent cropland to a local farmer or government CREP program due to financial reasons, or 2) purchase a smaller property that you’re able to implement what the property needs in order to be as efficient as possible for your goals? In most cases the latter may be a better solution for a person who wants to have a whitetail and wildlife paradise. You’d be amazed the potential of a small property with the correct practices implemented. There is no one size fits all policy for property improvements, but these practices may be something to consider implementing on your property.

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan is joined by fellow podcaster Nate Thomas to talks about hunting coyotes, the turkey population, of course deer. Nate kicks off the episode by talking about how his love for coyote hunting is up there at the same level as deer hunting, mixed in with a little strategy as well. They guys also talk about the low turkey population in the areas they hunt and some of the possible causes. The is just a really good BS Session that covers a little bit of everything. Enjoy!
