The Saint Barnabas United Church bid farewell to one of it's sons, Denzyl Petersen, who sadly succumbed to covid-19. Reverend Heidi Petersen lead the tributes for her husband. The Reverend Desmond van der Water officiated over the service which has been reproduced as a podcast.

Um, I'm sure you could have heard and really cool coolest insight, I thought it was really insightful how we described, you know, the behind the scenes, side of documentary making the technical side.

[00:00:50] I really enjoyed that. I also enjoyed his opinion on COVID cause he was really honest and I like the way he said it'll change. So I took, I understand you. I, and I understand what you're saying. Yeah, man. Um, moving on to today's episode, uh, I had

[00:01:07] I had to move this episode up by two weeks.

[00:01:12] Actually I was going to do it in a roundabout, uh, round about the 9th of July, but, um, My guests, my originally scheduled guests, um, there was a bit of a scheduling problem, you know, Blessed.

[00:01:25] I mean, he's, he's son, you know, his lady gave birth to his son and Zama also had a bit of a. Yeah. A bit of a scheduling thing, so I had to move things around a bit, but no stress, man. Um, I'll be. Yeah, those, those are two episodes I'm really looking forward to because they're all going to be based all around poetry, which is, I actually never done an episode, which is just about poetry.

[00:01:48] So definitely looking forward to talking to those brothers. Um, and I'll be giving you guys like, you know, I'll be telling you guys when. You know, when they'll be coming up, um, on my social media pages in those handles, I'll give to you at the end of this episode.

[00:02:05] solo and, um, I'm actually going to talk to you about two things.

[00:02:08] Uh, firstly is a project, a really cool, uh, Action research project that I was part of last year with south Africans city network, and Ebukhosini solutions with Baba Buntu.

[00:02:21] It was really, really dope, man. I'm going to explain to you guys why,

[00:02:24] um, also a lot about, um, being by being part of this, um, research project also gave me a lot of insight to, uh, You know what I wanted to invite on this platform because we came up with some really, really intresting data and I would explain it to you guys, but about my, um, my role in it, you know, um, I was a creative coordinator.

[00:02:44] Um, it was really interesting. It was really interesting. So I would unpack that a bit, but, and I will also tell you is, um, give us a bit of a recap, which I think is kind of necessary because as you know, I've been asking my guests every single week about their opinion on, um, COVID-19 so I will give you guys a bit of a recap because I think it's really.

[00:02:59] And it's really something that I'm

[00:03:01] really glad that

He is an editor and a filmmaker. Um, he also does a lot of documentaries. He works on a whole host of, uh, projects, you know, uh, shows that I'm sure some of you are probably are familiar with his work.

[00:01:29] You just didn't know that he was behind the editing of it. He's also quite a, uh, award-winning brother, um, as recently. Um, well, early on this year, he actually won another editing, um, award. Um, and, uh, we definitely gonna be covering that. We're gonna be covering, we're gonna be talking about these processes.

[00:01:46] Of course, you know, how we choose his subject matter, because if you know something about Ikaye’s work, you know, um, he does documentaries on really the, on and he does projects on things that personally, that I'm very, very interested in, you know, um, I remember watching one of these documentaries called I’m a Poet not too long ago and I loved it and I really loved it.

[00:02:05] I loved his approach. I loved his technique and everything. And as you guys know, like I'm really, really passionate and I've got an interesting history where the, um, with the spoken word. Um, so we're going to be covering a bit of all of that today, you know, Talk about these awards and his current and future projects.

[00:02:22] So stay tuned for that. That should be on about, uh, that should be a lot of fun. Today's episode is called nothing to see here, folks, um, inspired by, you know, just thinking on the early parts of my journey on, on mental health and how, you know, our families almost ignore what's going on, um, or pretend it doesn't exist.

[00:01:25] Um, And so that's kind of what I'd like to chat about today, um, is really how we cope when we feel unseen or unheard, or like what we're going through. Isn't acknowledged. Um, especially by the people closest to us, our family, you know, the people we live with, the people we identify or the first people we identify with, um, And I think, you know, it, and, and obviously the effect of that on our, on our mental health.

[00:02:04] Um, so for today's episode, I'll be chatting to a very good friend of mine. Um, her name is Nicole Germond . She is, we've probably been friends for about 20 odd years. We met in our first year of high school way back in 2000. Um, and yeah, I think, you know, we, we we've, we've watched each other grow and support each other along our, our individual mental health journeys.

[00:02:38] Um, and obviously as teenagers watching us struggle with anxiety, as we navigate depression, anxiety, um, again, in our early adulthood and here at university in Cape town, um, going through quite tumultuous relationships. Um, and then again, as adults, you know, or more matured adults, um, And so we, we have a pretty long history together and have quite a strong understanding of each other's family responses to our individual mental health journeys.

[00:03:22] Um, if I, if I reflect on my own, um, my own journey, I remember as a teenager feeling like I didn't belong, um, feeling. You know, as I, as I've mentioned in a previous podcast, I'm my mother's middle child. And growing up with, you know, my older and youngest sibling, um, before the, the three youngest siblings came along after, my parents divorced, I, I really struggled with.

[00:03:55] Anger anger towards my parents and the relationship specifically, my father and the abuse I witnessed specifically my mom and resenting or not even realizing I resented my mom only realizing that in later years. Um, but just feeling a sense of anger and feeling like. You know what I was experiencing, wasn't normal and long time feeling embarrassed by the events in my family.

[00:04:26] And I remember being probably in about grade nine. Um, and back in those days, we called it standard seven, even just a giveaway to, to my age. And, you know, I, I remember. Feeling lost, unseen. Unheard. Um, just like, as I said, like I didn't belong and you know, I would go on hunger strikes. So to show my, you know, disgust and upset with the way that my father was treating my mom and our family.

[00:05:05] Know, I would refuse to eat any of the food that he bought or refuse to wear any of the clothes that he bought. Um, and this would cause. Obviously going without food for all, you know, infrequent periods of food would affect one's mood. As I, as I now know. Um, and I think that added to my general sense of moodiness.

[00:05:30] And I remember my mom saying to me, you know, instead of delving into these, these issues, her response at that time was. well, you're just feeling sorry
