  • Episode 57.4 - The Spring 2010 Anime First Impression Episode Featuring Funkatron
OK. Since the actual discussion in this episode is not that important, I am mainly using this as a medium to announce that we are officially going to Anime Expo. The fact that this is the worst kept secret is not really the point of me announcing it here. We recorded this some time ago and we really had no idea the cost of how we are going to get some of the cast over there to Los Angeles. Foxy is demanding that I ask the audience to donate what you can to cover her cost to get over there. It turns out that the giant turtle that she lives on is slowly sinking and we need the funds to develop a vehicle for her to use to travel around the oil spill and get to the con. I seem to pick the worst times to tell people not to donate to our podcast. Consider the donate button as a "Help Foxy Not Die" button. Anyway, we, or likely just me, are going to be attending as regular guests of the con. I checked the analytics and can tell that our one listener has been checking our site in a lot of cities in California. If you feel like meeting us (please say no), email us and we can do a meet-up of some sort. I am sure that the guys from the One Piece Podcast might be around too if that gives you an excuse to see us. Regardless, I am going to be taking my portable mic and I might ask random strangers questions that I may post on the podcast. For those that are wondering about information on the con itself, go to the Anime Expo site. Oh right. Funkatron from the Unofficial One Piece Podcast asked us to record our first impressions on the Spring '10 anime season. That is in here too. Click here to download episode (Right-click and Save As) (0:00 - 14:11) Intro I told you I would beep it. I love how we are always timely about doing these kinds of episodes. We usually do this when a bunch of shows are about to end or new ones have already started. Be sure to expect our Summer Anime Preview in November. (14:12 - 39:10) Discussion (Our First Impressions Of This Season) Here is the list that we used. If you have been following the Twitter, you know that I have been watching more of these shows already. I don't think we are going to have our final say of this season. We may do a recommendation episode about an upcoming season of anime. That will give us a reason to stop doing these episodes for a while. (39:11 - 40:56) Eyecatch Orange Anime Podcast Glad to know you guys aren't dead. If you are wondering, we will be going to Florida Supercon too. Jammer's AniMovie Podcast I added you to the cast page. If you like the description, awesome. (40:57 - 1:35:06) Discussion (More Of Said Impressions) Sorry Funk, I didn't put the promo in there. (1:35:07 - 1:55:52) Closing That's twice now that I referenced Yu-Gi-Oh! The Abridged Series. • Episode 57 - The Haruhi Suzumiya Episode Featuring Jammer
I honestly wanted to do this episode as organized as possible. This is how a mistake turned into an idea which turned into a 2 hour long discussion about Haruhi Suzumiya. For this episode, I bring over Jammer from his AniMovie Blog...cast. I swear this guy combines words for noreason. Since I have been on almost every anime related episode he has done, I figured it would be appropriate for him to do a guest spot over here and talk about the subject of his first episode. Without his fire flowers, he now steps into the ass backwards realm. Hear how well he survives. It's to you how you are going to watch this one. You may have to check online for the different orders. (25:40 - 29:14) Discussion (Chibi Time) The Haruhi-chan series is very fun to watch. They aired around the time when the second season started. This discussion will bleed over to the next one. (29:15 - 29:55) Intro I make fun of his show now, but it is really good listen. Chances are I am going to appear in a bunch more episodes. We may have something else planned for the future. Stay tuned. (29:56 - 34:25) Discussion (The Ultimate Narrator) Though I didn't get a chance to say it, Crispin Freeman does a good job as Kyon. Yes, I have a bit of a bias towards the Japanese actor. Not that I didn't mind the dub, but I guess I just wasn't expecting to hear his voice when I saw it. Haruhi was hit or miss with me. Try it out for yourself. (34:26 - 40:39) Discussion (She Rocked My Socks) I have managed to get a few of Hirano Aya albums and most of them have a good sound. Here is an interesting example of her singing. Yeah, her range is pretty amazing. Here is a bit of normal voice with a interesting surprise. This is her recent single, Speed Star. There is a lot of running. (40:40 - 43:50) Discussion (Season Two...Again) I can't really say much else about this season. Obviously, the elephant in the room is the whole Endless Eight debacle. I think all the talking points have been said and plenty of videos of people complaining about it. I hate having all the negative vibe on the show so I would rather not discuss it. Someone decided to use their time to make it easier on everyone who wants to watch those episodes. This is only part one. I am sure you can find the rest by yourselves. (43:51 - 1:17:16) Discussion (The Story) This is the biggest segment of the episode. I know I should have brought this up earlier. I didn't really expect to have the topic go all over the place on this episode. My plan was to have this as straight forward and organized as possible. I am sure I could rearrange it make it flow well, but that it is not worth the trouble. I don't think I have as much time to do crazy stuff for my episodes. Maybe in the future I will start experimenting a lot more. For now, you are going to have to deal with what we give you. (1:17:17 - 1:32:39) Discussion (Not The ASOS Brigade) Since the discussion lead to something else, I might as well explain what the ASOS Brigade is. This is Bandai's idea of marketing Haruhi here in the States. Here is a clip of the first episode. I think you are starting to get the idea. The whole thing came from a site that released videos with information on how the series was going to be coming out in America. They are doing it again now to promote the second season. I hope it turns out well for them. I would actually like to see more crazy ways that companies could do to promote their series. I guess Haruhi is the only show crazy enough show for them to bank on. (1:32:40 - 1:48:22) Discussion (Smoked Cheese) (1:48:22 - 1:55:52) Closing Oh right. The movie. • Episode 56 - The Gateway Episode Featuring Josh With A Lead Pipe In The Lounge
Oh right, the podcast. Took a while but we finally got an episode ready for you. I had one to many technical difficulties which is the reason for the delay. I hope you have been at least enjoying the active Twitter. Oh right, I can't go on there as much due to work. Turns out that promotions mean that you have to do more work. Plus, school is getting closer and closer ending for me. I think one less headache will be enough for me to concentrate on important things. That does not include this podcast of course. So, for your listening pleasure (or not since there was way too much noise to remove), here is our discussion on what anime has done to lead us into the different experiences we have had. For this one, we brought over a good friend of ours, Josh Dunham, to join in. Dedizen is here too. That explain the technical problems... Click here to download episode (Right-click and Save As) (0:00 - 14:20) Intro I wonder if that guy on the motorcycle makes Skittles deliveries all over Foxy's neighborhood. That guy has been in all of our recordings so far. We might as well be sponsored by Mars. All this talk about Skittles got me thinking about this AMV. More on this subject later. (14:21 - 48:05) Discussion (Remember That?) I think I have said that Gundam story way too many times. One of my first anime purchases and that set is now going for $120 online. Bandai is going to be re-releasing the Anime Legends set though. (48:06 - 49:26) Earcatch Animeshon Podcast You need to send me that 3JP promo. (49:27 - 1:33:51) Discussion (Now What?) Yes Miyavi is a guy and yes he is serious business. (1:33:52 - 1:35:02) Earcatch Jammer's AniMovie Podcast Oh hi, Jammer. You are late on releasing that episode. Look, don't worry about it and congrats on graduating. Oh hi, Timestamp. (1:35:03 - 2:05:41) Discussion (What's Left?) The Host trailer (2:05:42 - 2:08:06) Closing We got more with Josh in a little while. • Episode 55 - The Detective Conan Episode Featuring Cheerleaders
Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to listen to this episode of the Ass Backwards Anime Podcast. Though two people could have just been replaced with sheep, we go through a large one-sided discussion about a personal favorite of mine, Detective Conan. Click here to download episode (Right-click and Save As) (0:00 - 4:33) Intro What PwnGoatJunkie doesn't understand is that you can't just force some things to happen. (4:34 - 1:36:33) Discussion (The Whole Case) I think I covered enough in the episode to need a lot of notes. The one thing I really want to mention is the live action specials of Conan. Two were made some time ago. The first was a prequel to the series which leads to the day where Shinichi was turned into a kid. The other, which the opening sequence is below, has to do with Conan and Ai turning back to their older forms and our two favorite members of the Black Organization show up. Here is the trailer for the 14th movie. Looks like this one will end up covering the issue of how Kaito Kid and Shinichi look so much alike. (1:36:34 - 1:38:16) Closing Shinjitsu wa itsumo hitotsu! • Episode 54 - The Episode 8 Ultimate Episode Featuring Sketch
Consider this the first episode of a new wave of mecha related episodes. For the one person who listened to our old episodes, you may remember episode eight. That was the beginning that would lead into the more Skype centered format that most of you are now used to. We no longer had a proper place to record so we experimented in different places. We picked the wrong place on that one. Also, we no longer had the backbone of our show available to us to provide a proper subject for the episode. We picked the wrong one. We literally thought up the idea of doing a mecha episode the second we started recording. As usual, we were all over the place. To make for it, I decided to take a page from Madhouse and just remake the episode into something better. I bring over Sketch of Too-many-things-to-name fame and we talk about three mecha shows. We lightly jog though Godannar, pick up the pace with GaoGaiGar, and end with a full run through Gurren Lagann. I cut out most of the yelling so it ended being less than three hours. Click here to download episode (Right-click and Save As) (0:00 - 9:12) Intro Consider the beginning the new gimmick for these episodes. I lost track of how many times I told my Gundam story. I am sure you are going to end up hearing it more times in the future. I am not going to lie to you; this was recorded a few months ago. Sadly, First Gundam and Zeta have been taken down from Crunchyroll for a while now. Wing is still on there so maybe I will finally finish it now. (9:13 - 27:28) Review (Shinkon Gattai Godannar) It was really hard to put my love of this show into words. I think it is safe to say that this show may not work with everyone. The initial hurdle is the fanservice this show has. Why this show works so well is that they play it so seriously. There might be boobs exploding out of someone's clothes and no one acknowledges it. Not to say that it is not deliberate, but the attitude of being such a tongue-and-cheek show speaks volumes. With the recent trend of moe centered shows, if they take a similar approach, I am sure they can make another winner. No, Strike Witches does not count. I would like to take a moment about a subject that was overlooked in this section of the episode. That being: The best running gag of the entire show. There is character by the name of Tetsuya Kouji. For those who don't know, he is an obvious parody of most hot blooded robot pilots. He even shares the name of the two leads of Mazinger-Z and Great Mazinger, Kouji Kabuto and Tetsuya Tsurugi respectfully. He is essentially the one you expected to be the lead in this show. Unfortunately, he gets hilariously taken out in every robot battle. Again, this is why I love this show. Every time his robot gets broken, everyone always acts like he died and never acknowledge him again during the battle. The last thing I want to mention about him is that he is the final link between all three shows: He is voiced by Nobuyuki Hiyama. Here is the trailer that Sketch was referencing. (27:29 - 28:15) Earcatch The Unofficial One Piece Podcast How was the con? (28:16 - 58:08) Review (King of Braves: GaoGaiGar) This chart can better explain to you what you will experience in GaoGaiGar. A clip of the dub WITH DAN GREEN! You are going to be getting a lot of that when you watch the series, but it is worth it to get to FINAL. Just by me looking up clips for the notes, manly tears are shedding and they can't stop. It is kind of an endurance challenge for me to watch the Perfect Yell version of the opening. Only when you are done with the series and FINAL, you can attempt at the video. The video itself is so spoiler heavy that it is only best viewed after you finished everything. (58:09 - 59:34) Earcatch Animeshon Really like the new promo by the way Josh. Way to fail there Sketch. Here are links to his stuff. The UnAbridged Podcast They talk about abridged series. I don't know what else to say about them. Sketch's YouTube Channel Sadly, his One Piece Abridg

  • Episode 53.1 - The Marineford Report Card Episode Featuring No Homo
I love the fact that we did this episode when Zach was not around to make him tell us his two cents. Who am I kidding? He has his own show for that. Since the failure that was our One Piece episode has slowly been erased from the feed, we thought it would be best to fill that void and give you an unbiased opinion of the current happenings of the One Piece manga. Of course, if you have already downloaded this episode without reading the notes, you might have just screwed yourself. This is going to be a spoilerific journey through the current arc, where we will grade the individuals (that matter) and give our opinions of who really made the grade. Click here to download episode (Right-click and Save As) (0:00 - 5:35) Intro I will eventually buy at least the first volume of the manga. Right now, I am not in the right position to be making such demanding purchases. Until then, I will be marathoning the Blu-ray versions of Claymore, Ouran, and Samurai Champloo on my newly constructed computer while I wear my replica WWE United States Title belt over my sholder and alphebitize my current collection of anime and manga. I am not rich. OK. Here is the explanation for the grades: First letter is for achievement. Middle number is for attendance. Second letter is for conduct/effort. (5:36 - 12:54) Discussion (The Arc In General) I don't know if there are words to properly explain why I am not as impressed with events with the arc. I am not saying that was a bad arc, it just seemed like there were some unnecessary parts. I am sure seeing this in action will make up for me being slightly disappointed. (12:55 - 34:34) Discussion (The Main Actors) In the previous recording, we actually gave Luffy a 'B' in this arc. Unfortunately, I happen to not be recording everyone else's audio. I am sure had that not happened, we might have been a little bit more nicer to certain characters, expect for Moria. He deserves what he got. I hope someone caught that Clue reference. Best movie adaption of a game ever made and possibly ever will be. The Grades Luffy: D1A- Whitebeard: A2A Ace: C1A (34:35 - 36:01) Earcatch Orange Anime Podcast So, are you guys dead or something? Animeshon Podcast Seems like you came back from the dead. Jammer's AniMovie Podcast You are too new to be dead. (36:02 - 59:42) Discussion (The Warlords) I really miss Rocko's Modern Life. I am usually reluctant to do my Moria impression. I guess since I am usually forced to do it while a chapter with him is being read. You kinda need me to let it come naturally. Otherwise, it sounds so forced and unfunny when you to cue up the role. The Grades Moria: F3D Don Flamingo: A1A Hawkeyes: B2B Boa: C1A Crocodile: B2C Jimbei: A1A Kuma: C3A Blackbeard: A3A KUNG-FU TREACHERY (59:43 - 1:17:37) Discussion (Various Pirates) This shows that we are not the blind fanboys that encompasses most forums. We love the One Piece and all, we just can't be bothered learning every single person's name. I know Oda is The Jesus and one is told not to fuck with said deity, but I'll worry about the characters if they show up again. When that time comes, you will hear me saying, "Oh, him." The Grades Marco: F3C Diamond Jaw: F3F Mr. 3: D3B Ivankov: B1B Cut Man: C3D White Bay Morgan: F3F Mr.1: B1B You can only do it once. (1:17:38 - 1:50:50) Discussion (The Marines) You have too much time on your hands to be able to remember every Marine's name. The Grades Various Vice Admirals: B2A Garp: EXEMPT Smoker: D3F Hina: D3D Coby: F3D Sentamaru: D3F Aokiji: C2B Kizaru: F1F Akainu: A1A Sengoku: F1F Goat: A3F (1:50:51 - 1:52:54) Closing We don't get a chance to talk about One Piece that often. I don't know if the demand is needed to talk about it right now, so we won't talk about it until we are provoked. About SSAA Podcast

From the publisher's feed

We are an anime podcast. But we also talk about manga, asian dramas, and pretty much anything else that comes in our minds. We are the best kept secret on the Internet. We are the Ass Backwards Anime…
