  • What's Wrong and What's Right with the Church, Part 2 - Jan 15 - Second Sunday after the Epiphany
This week we'll continue our look at the seven churches from first century Asia Minor (present day Turkey) described in Revelation 3. These churches are much like our own churches - struggling against the temptation to accommodate herself to the pagan culture in which she sits by engaging in the immorality of that culture, and when she is able to harden herself against those temptations she finds herself loveless and cold to the one who died and was raised for her. But Jesus promises that - in spite of her failings and weaknesses - he is still determined to live amongst his people and rule and reign the whole world through us.

  • The Book of Revelation - A Vision of Jesus - Jan 1 - First Sunday after Christmas
Much of Revelation is composed in the ancient genre, apocalyptic. Often
mistaken as a dystopian description of the future collapse of the universe,
apocalyptic is instead a literary tool ancient Jewish writers used to pull back the
curtain on every day political, social, and cultural events to reveal the hand of
the sovereign creator God at work. And the Book of Revelation is no different: John
pulls back the curtain on events both past, present (to him and his readers), and
future to show that in spite of the apparent weakness and vulnerability of God's
people, Jesus will win and be universally acknowledged as King of Kings and Lord of
    Lords.
In this opening sermon, Aaron explains the nature of apocalyptic literature, gives a
brief description of John's broad goals in his prophecy, and briefly introduces some
of the main themes of the book by looking at chapter 1.

  • Empowered by the Holy Spirit - Jun 12 - The Holy Trinity
Peter is no longer the frightened fisherman denying Jesus. Just 50 days
later, having seen the risen Lord and restored by Him, Peter’s Pentecost speech
reveals the Holy Spirit’s power within him.
Quoting David to thousands gathered in Jerusalem, he clearly shows Jesus is the
Messiah, whom the crowd had crucified just 7 weeks prior.
Cut to the heart, they ask what they should do. The answer is simple and direct. He
calls them, and us today, to repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins. The
Holy Spirit was for them, and us too, God’s precious gift to empower us from within.
3000 people became baptized believers in Jesus that day. By the working of the Holy
Spirit through the Word of God and Baptism, we can be as confidant as Peter and the
crowd that Jesus is alive, and for us. We can be ready for the day of His return.
