Star Wars Splash Page

From the satisfying conclusion to IDW Publishing's third and final issue of Star Wars Adventures -- Destroyer Down #3 to the in-depth father-and-son dynamic in Star Wars: Age of Republic -- Jango Fett #1 to a somewhat unexpected, yet utterly satisfying, return of an Imperial villian in Star Wars #59, Jeff and Matt are impressed, to a point, with the comics released on Jan. 9 from Marvel and IDW.

Besides the comics discussion, we're also waxing rhapsodic on when and how the monthly Star Wars title should tackle events between those seen in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi (Bothans, everybody, Bothans.), as well as saying goodbye, prematurely, to writer Kieron Gillen's run.

This week's Star Wars comics, out Jan. 16, include:
Star Wars: Age of Republic -- Special #1Star Wars: Age of Republic -- Qui-Gon Jinn Adventures -- Destroyer Down #1 (Second Printing)

Last week's Star Wars comics this week were profound wildy adventurous, providing readers with a delicate yet forceful examination of the father-and-son relationship between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker in Jody Houser's deftly written Star Wars: Age of Republic -- Obi-Wan Kenobi one shot. In the third issue of the five-issue Star Wars: Han Solo -- Imperial Cadet, Robbie Thompson scripted an endearing story about building camaraderie and never losing sight of those you've left behind.

Join us for our discussion and let us know what you think about these two tales.

It's our end-of-the-year blowout spectacular special with a less-than-loquacious Jeff comparing and contrasting with Matt what was great about Star Wars comics in 2018 (Doctor Aphra, Poe Dameron and Tales From Vader's Castle), what wasn't so great (questionable editorial decisions) and what was just plain forgettable (looking right at you, DJ: Most Wanted).

This year is a fresh start and we're optimistic about what it will bring to Star Wars in all its media iterations. We're grateful you spent 2018 with us and hope you'll do the same in 2019.

The last issue of Darth Vader Vol. 2 was cinematic in its scope, detailed in its delivery and yielded far more questions than answers through the course of its Star Wars homages from the first to final page. In short, it began as it started: Expansive mythology for not just the Sith lord, but Anakin Skywalker, too.

As for Solo: A Star Wars Story #3? This issue offered up some compelling details about Qi'ra, Dryden Vos and Crimson Dawn, as readers familiar with the film found new material to wrap their heads around.

A trifecta of Star Wars comics from Marvel's provided an assortent of achievements, and setbacks, for some characters and concepts, yet still advanced the medium of comics as one that is hand-in-glove to television and the cinema, too.

The Star Wars: Age of Republic -- Darth Maul one shot was a master class in how this series is focusing on a specific character and expanding our knowledge but, more importantly, advancing a prequel trilogy-era villain's story.

In Han Solo -- Imperial Cadet #2, we're quite satisfied with how this book is building on what was just a casual mention in the Solo: A Star Wars Story film, adding some detailed resonance that's important in the Han Solo mythology.

Meanwhile, in Doctor Aphra #27, Simon Spurrier (we don't call him Si anymore) is having far too much fun with the character, the series and Star Wars, all to our benefit.

Marvel's ambitious, 27-issue Age of... maxi series begins its run with a potent yet divisive first issue, Age of Republic -- Qui-Gon Jinn, while in Star Wars #58, readers are enveloped with some seriously solid character development that has us rethinking our long-conceived notions about Han, Leia and Luke.

From IDW comes the second issue of the three-part Star Wars Adventures: Destroyer Down reprint that proves, again, an all-ages comics can have a real resonance.

In news, we break down November's Star Wars comics sales ranks, welcome Chris Ryall back to IDW Publishing and offer up some film recommendations.

The Young Padawans -- Emily and Micah -- band together again to read and discuss the latest Star Wars Adventures comics from IDW Publishing. Joined by Matt and Amy, this episode puts issues #14 and #15 in the spotlight with stories about finding a missing Falcon, making a new friend and how old friends began as new friends.

It's a rollicking good time as the quartet talks about the twists and turns in both comic books, featuring stories that focus on Han Solo and Chewbacca, Poe Dameron and BB-8, as well as the beginning of "The Flight of the Falcon" series of tales that show why the Millennium Falcon has always been the most elusive prize in all of Star Wars.

The next issue of Star Wars Adventures #16 is due out Dec. 19.

Just one issue this week, but it's left a searing impression on Jeff and Matt.

Darth Vader #24 is setting up the series' conclusion with an unusual vista that may change the reality and perception of Darth Vader and, by extension, Anakin Skywalker, too, with consequences that could potentially resonate down the Star Wars timeline.A little far out mysticism anybody?

Well this episode is certainly ab-solutely ab-tastic and utterly f(ab)ulous without being at all pec-uliar.

It's a double dose of Han Solo without a shirt as we discuss the second part of "The Escape" in Star Wars #57 and discuss the budding feelings of ... er ... attachment between Princess Leia, while in the pages of Solo: A Star Wars Story #2, we're treated to the beginning bonds of friendship between Han and Chewbacca, though we lament the lack of Enfys Nest character development.

In news, there's discussion of upcoming projects from writer Charles Soule as well talk of potential holiday gift-giving ideas, too, courtesy of Coffee With Kenobi's team of writers and editors.

Fresh of the heels of being deemed too obscure for the Star Wars Celebration podcast stage (Q: Who reads Star Wars comics anyway?A: About 200,000 do, every month.), we're looking at last week's Star Wars comics this week, including a rather stirring start of a new story arc in Doctor Aphra #26 and a thoroughly entertaining chapter of "Fortress Vader" in Darth Vader #23 that deftly blends subtle humor with a deeper lesson on the notion of maintaining balance in the force. There's also news and views, given Marvel's decision to scupper -- not cancel -- Chuck Wendig's Star Wars: Shadow of Vader five-issue mini series; A Star Wars Comic's decision to postpone its November release until December; the passing of Stan Lee and John Tyler Christopher's Yavin Princess Leia action-figure variant cover for Star Wars #58.
