Star Wars Splash Page

Heavy hearts as we mark the passing of Stan Lee, who co-created some of Marvel's most enduring characters and, thankfully, reconsidered his position against adapting a yet-to-be released sci-fi film that was to be called Star Wars by Marvel (thank you, Roy Thomas, for convincing him otherwise!).

We remember Lee for the visionary that he was and will never forget him.

In this episode we tackle three comics -- two from Marvel and one from IDW -- and come away with some salient observations about character building, what makes an artist great and how a writer makes a story sing. The issues include Star Wars #56, the first issue of the five-issue Star Wars: Han Solo -- Imperial Cadet and Star Wars Adventures: Destroyer Down #1 (of three). Each has its some strong moments that left us wanting more.As for news, October wasn't kind to Star Wars comics, with justtwo titles finishing in the top 100 -- you read that right -- as sales continue sauntering vaguely lower. We also talked about the latest John Tyler Christopher exclusive, an action-figure cover variant that features Princess Leia in her award-ceremony togs that can only be acquired through John's web site.

This week's Star Wars comics include:
Doctor Aphra #26Darth Vader #22

Star Wars Splash Page is a weekly podcast dedicated solely to contemporary Star Wars comics published by Marvel, Dark Horse and previously IDW, featuring views about the current week's comics, interviews with the writers, artists, colorists, letterers and editors who create them, as well as the latest details on publishing schedules, upcoming series and mini-series, so that you, the listener have more detail and context about the comics that are a vital part of Star Wars canon, lore and legends.

Five weeks after it began, the frightful final issue of Star Wars Adventures: Tales From Vader's Castle #5 provides a resonant endsong to the mini series, keeping the suspense and chills on a steady course from start to finish.

We're quite happy with how this weekly experiment played out and impressed how it not only kept its all-ages appeal, but managed to deliver enough frights for all readers. We were also pleased to see how it tied in to the events of Marvel's ongoing Darth Vader series, too.

In keeping with our goal of letting listeners, and readers of Star Wars comics, hear from the creators, we're joined by Per Hedman, whose Star Wars-inspired homage to Gary Larsen's The Far Side -- The Far Dark Side -- has been making readers laugh, pause, think and, yes, puzzle, for awhile now. Join us as he talks about what inspired the strip, how he creates it and about his love for Star Wars, too.

Readers are treated to what is arguably the first true Greek tragedy of modern Star Wars comics in the pages of Marvel's Doctor Aphra #25, a deftly executed -- in more ways than one -- conclusion to "The Catastrophe Con" story arc that left us agog because of the impact of the story.

In the pages of IDW Publishing's Star Wars Adventures: Tales From Vader's Castle #4, its Ewoks who are given a weighty gravitas in a story that's one part monster epic and another part sheer terror.

Art is murderously misunderstood as readers, finally, get some details as to the origin of Lord Momin, the Sith Lord whose helm was introduced way back in the pages of the first Lando mini series, in the pages of Darth Vader #22, while the horror is sublime in the pages of IDW's Star Wars Adventures: Tales From Vader's Castle #3.Speaking of Star Wars Adventures, we sat down with writer James Gilarte to talk abou this first-ever Star Wars comics writing credit.

He wrote the lead story next week's Star Wars Adventures #15, a tale that features not just Poe Dameron and BB-8, but a brand-new character that we think fans will find themselves growing fond of throught the story and beyond.

It's an ambitious and well-crafted story that fits the purview of the title in every possible way and, once you read it, you'll see why we're hoping he's coming back for more stories.

All that along with news, details about the coming week's Star Wars comics and so much more in a galaxy far, far away.

There's much to be learned in the stories, be it the dangers of revisionist history to knowing one's self worth.

Emily, Micah, Amy and Matt bring talk about how Anakin and Padme, Mace Windu (he can be nice, you know) and more instill the message of the Star Wars Saga and that is hope.

Join us as kids of all ages discuss the only Star Wars all-ages comics titles.

It was a quiet week in Star Wars comics until it wasn't.

Jeff McGee and Matt Moore discuss Chuck Wendig's reveal that he's been "fired" by Marvel, the implications it may have and the reactions it's drawn.

Also discussed? The solid and deft debut of Robbie Thompson and Will Sliney's first issue of the Solo: A Star Wars Story adaptation seven-issue mini series, for one. Then there's the genuinely creepy stories found the in the first two issues of the five-issue IDW Publishing Star Wars Adventures: Tales From Vader's Castle written by Cavan Scott and illustrated by Derek Charm and a rotating cast of artists.

This week's episode is about endings, both in the comics and beyond the comics, too. Star Wars #55 brings an end to Kieron Gillen's destructive and damaging -- to the Rebel Alliance -- "Hope Dies" arc, leaving Han, Luke and Leia partnered with Sana Starros as the Rebellions strives to survive, not flourish. The issue also marks the end of Salvador Larroca's run as artist on the series, too.

We also talk about the conclusion of Poe Dameron with writer Charles Soule who, at NYCC, announced that his second volume of Darth Vader is coming to its end with issue #25.

The adventures of Black Squadron concludes its run in the pages of Star Wars: Poe Dameron #31 in an inspiring, almost poetic manner, while the mysteries of the force prove to much to ignore as a former employer comes calling in Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #24.

In A Star Wars Comic #17, Jim Mello and Alex Ray proffer a compelling story of duty, honor and sacrifice, but ask if it's forced, and not embraced, is it the same?

There's a crisis in continuity, again, as Star Wars #54 kills off a familiar Rogue One face, while the Falcon is taken to Vandor for a new reason in Lando: Double or Nothing #5, the final issue of the mini series.

We're also joined by Peabody Award-winning writer Rodney Barnes to talk about what went into making the second Lando mini series so memorable, the challenges of writing a Star Wars comic and his love of the Saga writ large.

In the last issue of The Last Jedi Adaptation #6 there's a redemption that plays out so well, it should have been in the film it was adapting.

In the pages of Darth Vader #21, there's an image of Anakin so horrifying that you'll need to pour bleach on your brain.

We're also beginning a new segment: A letters page. Ben Lewitt joins Jeff and Matt to talk about character representation in the pages of Doctor Aphra Annual #2. It's an intriguing discussion.
