Star Wars Splash Page

Blood, porgs, flashbacks, surprise reveals and water, lots and lots of water. From Mon Cala to Ach-To, this past week's Star Wars comics enveloped one end of the Saga to the other and did not disappoint.

Join us for this week's episode as we break down the events of Darth Vader #16 -- arguably the single most stunning Star Wars comic issue this year, so far -- as well as the solidly paced adaptation of The Last Jedi #1 and the worthwhile Thrawn #4.

We also talk about the fifth anniversary of Coffee With Kenobi, how it's grown and how happy we are to be part of the family. There's also mention of Daniel Jose Older's thoughts about what Star Wars comics he'd be keen on writing and, more importantly, about whom. Finally, if you're a fan of original art, be sure to check out artist Michael Walsh's web site for a chance to purchase his original art from The Last Jedi #1.

Jeff, Matt and ... Daisy make three?

No, not that Daisy, the other Daisy, who weighs in with a woof as we discuss the events of Part IV of "Mutiny at Mon Cala" in the pages of Star Wars #47.

We're also discussing, at length, the future of the Poe Dameron series, given its sliding sales stats, Charles Soule's plans for his other Star Wars comics title -- Vader's fortress can be a scary castle, it's true -- as well as the April sales estimates for all of Marvel's Star Wars comics.

We're also looking ahead to the release of the first volume of the English-language edition of the manga adapting Claudia Gray's Lost Stars novel.

No need for bows or ribbons in this episode as we dive deep -- literally and figuratively -- into Darth Vader #15 and revel in the riveting weirdness of Doctor Aphra #19.

Both issues are some of the finest Star Wars comics we've ever read and it's clear that each has its own particular tack that gets better with each issue. Join us to find out why we think so.

Speaking of Doctor Aphra, do check out the in-depth interview with Kieron Gillen and Si Spurrier conducted by Bria Lavorgna for the Star Wars website.

And don't forget Free Comic Book Day on May 5. IDW Publishing has a special Star Wars Adventures issue by Cavan Scott, Derek Charm and Tom B. Long that's a must-read (We know, we read it.)

We're building the bridges when it comes to Star Wars movies, comics and books, too, speaking with writer Cavan Scott and delving deep into a new story arc in Marvel's superb Poe Dameron series.

From The Force Awakens to The Last Jedi in Poe Dameron #26 to news that Star Wars will begin to cross from A New Hope to The Empire Strikes Back starting with issue #50, there's no chasm deep enough to preclude our -- and your -- crossing.

Speaking of crossing vast gulfs, writer Cavan Scott joins us for a chat about why he strived, successfully, to bring Jaxxon and Amaiza back into canon, too.

Like you, he's a fan of the Star Wars Saga and is among those now contributing to it through his novels (Choose Your Destiny: Han and Chewie Adventure and four volumes of Adventures in Wild Space, including The Escape, The Snare, The Steal and The Cold) as well as comics (Star Wars Adventures) and, we hope, much more to come in the next few months.

_ Doctor Aphra #19

All it takes is a spark to light a Rebellion, but a tidal wave goes a long way, too. Such was the lesson learned from Darth Vader #14, while in Thrawn #3, readers learned up close and personal how to succeed in politics when you don't mind leaving behind a trail of human wreckage.

Looking ahead? We're excited about what Rodney Barnes told CBR.com about his writing next month's Star Wars: Lando -- Double or Nothing mini series, which sets up the character nicely ahead of his appearance in the Solo: A Star Wars Story film.

We learned something new about Star Wars from this past week's comics: Everybody poops.

The Solo: A Star Wars Story trailer came out just before we began recording. Our thoughts? "I've got a good feeling about this."

We had good feelings about Star Wars #46 and A Star Wars Comic #14, too.

March's Star Wars comics orders, they weren't so low, either, with Star Wars 44 ranked No. 14 on Diamond's Top 100 orders for March, followed by issue 45 at 17 and Darth Vader 13 at No. 18. Doctor Aphra 18 came in at No. 59 and was followed by Poe Dameron 25 at No. 88.

Speaking of Darth Vader and Poe Dameron, those series' writer, Charles Soule, has his first novel out now. We've read The Oracle Year and can say, with authority, it's good.

Meanwhile, Daniel Jose Older's Last Shot novel features Sana Starros in it, whose first appearance came in the pages of Star Wars Vol. 2. Read an excerpt of the book, due out April 17, at the Star Wars web site.

Lastly, Gary Whitta, who is writing the upcoming The Last Jedi comics adaptation, disclosed on Twitter that he's working on a possible remake of the 1980s sci-fi flick The Last Starfighter, which has us totally stoked.

There's a soap-opera style appeal to the latest issue of Doctor Aphra, the lone Marvel Star Wars comic that Jeff McGee and Matt Moore sat down to discuss in detail in this episode.

Also in the fray with issue 18? Weird but wonderful horror and bio-warfare experiments never seen before.

As for news? Jaxxon's back in canon and he's bringing Amaiza with him! While we were aware the Lepi's return was imminent, writer Cavan Scott shed a great deal more light about the character bouncing back into the Star Wars firmament. He, artist Mauricet and colorist Chris Fenoglio have written backup story to Star Wars Adventures Annual 1, which is out April 18.

Marvel's Star Wars comics have a new group editor, while Charles Soule has offered up some splendid detail about the Poe Dameron series in an interview at Marvel.com about its past and its future, making our discussion of Poe Dameron #25 that more involved. In Star Wars #45, Kieron Gillen was very prescient about the role milk plays in the life of Luke Skywalker.

We also want to be sure you're aware of the Looking for Leia project, an edifying and entertaining docu-series that should -- we hope -- find a home on a streaming service, sooner than later.

We're doing the time warp as Star Wars continuity takes a hit, then course corrects (at least digitally) as we dive into Darth Vader #13 and see Imperial philosophy up close and personal in Thrawn #2.

There's even a mystery Jedi that has us pondering the events of Christie Golden's Dark Disciple novel.

Not included? News that inaugural line editor Jordan D. White is stepping down to take over as group editor Marvel's X-books. Taking his place as Star Wars group editor is Mark Paniccia.

A change at the top is likely to augur even more down below. What's to come? We'll find out. We'll have thoughts about the change in next week's episode.

A flood of departures washes over Marvel and IDW comics, including long-time editor Heather Antos of Marvel and IDW chief creative officer Chris Ryall and PR guru and super scribe Steven Scott.

Meanwhile, there's news to be had about Star Wars Adventures' Free Comic Book Day offering, LINE's decision to adapt Claudia Gray's novel, Leia, Princess of Alderaan, for its web site starting in May, Star Wars' comics return to the industry's monthly Top 10 sales charts and some conjecture about Jaxxon.

And did we mention that we parse, dissect and discuss Star Wars #44, the beginning of a new story arc focused on Mon Cala?

It's true. We do.
