Starting and running your own business can sometimes be exhausting, especially if you are trying to balance another full-time career, a family, or other responsibilities. Today on Start Scale Succeed, Nicole is chatting to Katie Phillips, burnout expert, business coach, and mentor, about dealing with being overwhelmed and burnout.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Stress can feel like an overstimulation, whereas burnout is bottoming out.
- You can change your job or location, but the thing you need to change to avoid burnout is your habits.
- The early signs of burnout are trouble sleeping, being irritable, being withdrawn, aches and pains, and skin irritation.
- Katie recommends keeping track of your feelings to avoid burnout. If you become aware of what you feel and the things that make you feel that way then you can change your habit to avoid that thing. The same is true for the reverse, if you note the things that make you feel good then doing them can help you release stress.
- You can also apply this to your work. Keep track of when you’re distracted while working and what the common themes are when you feel you’re working really well. Pinpointing is key.
- Burnout is not a weakness, it’s just a sign that you’ve been doing too much without support. Support is so important for taking the pressure off, even in ways you wouldn’t even think. Things like getting your shopping delivered can just take out one of those tiny tasks, freeing your time.
- If you notice signs of burnout in an employee or co-worker, then don’t be afraid to have a chat, just remember to keep to the facts and not project any assumptions onto the person.
- Remember to understand that anyone you work with, whether it’s a client or employee, they have a life outside of work with challenges and struggles.
- Keep your work space separate from your living space. Turn the laptop off and switch off from work at the end of the day.
