There aren't many choreographers in the musical theatre industry who have had as much success as Stephen Mear CBE. Since the late 1990s, Stephen Mear's helped reshape some of the Musical Theatre's most beloved works such as 'Anything Goes', 'Gypsy' and 'Sweet Charity' into pieces for today's audiences. Along the way, he has also brought home 3 Olivier Awards as well as developed a reputation for being one of the West End's most revered choreographers. Since his debut, Stephen has also worked extensively on Broadway, across the United States, in Europe as well as in the U.K. regions with a long run as Associate Choreographer for Chichester Festival Theatre. He continues to be a strong champion for the Musical Theatre industry and has become a patron for numerous performing arts schools including Laine Theatre Arts and The Brighton Academy, encouraging young people to get involved in Musical Theatre.
With 'Mary Poppins' now firmly reopened in the West End and featuring his and Sir Matthew Bourne OBE's Olivier Award winning choreography, Stephen Mear was kind enough to sit down with us to share his insights into the industry and working with some of the industry's top talent. He also tells us his thoughts on the recent backlash against his 'Mary Poppins' collaborator legendary producer: Sir Cameron Mackintosh. It's a fascinating listen as he makes it clear that talent must always come first whilst remaining a faithful supporter of diversity causes. Moreover, Stephen Mear reasserts his passion for working especially after a year of theatre closures and we look forward to what else has to offer in the years ahead.
