Vikram Patel is The Pershing Square Professor of Global Health and Wellcome Trust

Principal Research Fellow at the Harvard Medical School. His work has focused on the

burden of mental disorders, their association with social disadvantage, and the use of

community resources for their prevention and treatment. 

He gave a very popular Ted Talk about global mental health that has over 1 million views.

He was listed in TIME Magazine’s 100 most influential persons of the year in 2015.

Bob Pautke is one of the most inspirational and positive people that I have ever met. Although he doesn’t have a direct connection to addiction or personal struggles with mental health, he improves the lives of others through relentless positivity and serviced focused work. Bob spends a great deal of time working with young people and helps them find purpose in their lives while preparing them for the real world. He also works with the at risk community where he helps to build people up and plays an important role in preparing confident and capable members of society. Matt Peterson is on the podcast and shares his story. He grew up in a religious family and ironically suffered a major injury as an adolescent while involved in church activities. Being introduced to opiates at a young age, his life would spiral out of control and ultimately sent him on the run from the police. Once he got into recovery he spent time rebuilding his life through school, family and working as a peer support specialist to help others navigate their recovery.

Matt has started a business as a personal chef which he ultimately wants to incorporate working with people who struggle with addiction.

Scarlet Hudson, affectionately known as “Mama Scar”, is a beacon of hope for thousands of at-risk individuals, mostly women who have been cast aside and living in the darkness of addiction. She was very successful in the corporate world for over 30 years, but she got a calling from God to help those in need. She began driving around at night with simple brown bag meals and gave them to women who lived on the street. Over time she decided to make this her full time mission. 

She started a non-profit called The Women of Alabaster and it quickly became a safe haven for those in need. It is a faith-based organization that desires to meet the needs of those caught in human trafficking by offering alternatives to a life on the streets. We fulfill our mission by developing relationships; gaining trust as an opportunity to offer support in “off the street” facilities, faith based programs, life skills, and educational opportunities; and sharing and showing them the unconditional love of Jesus Christ.

This is an amazing episode and a truly remarkable story of perseverance, determination and the will to live. At only 22 years of age, Daniel Henderson has experienced more trauma than some people experience in a lifetime. From troubles at home, addiction and a life-threatening traumatic brain injury, Daniel has really battled the odds. Ultimately, he came out the other side and made a miraculous recovery. He now works in the substance use and mental health field; he started his own recovery coaching organization as well as facilitating relationships with industry leaders in hopes of developing best in class care in the Cincinnati area.

Ben Fisher is a walking, talking example of what hope and determination look like. There is greatness in all of us and we are glad that Ben is here in the world today to share his many talents. Through his early recovery he learned woodworking and has become a master guitar builder. His meticulous attention to detail comes through in his work, he spends upwards of 160 hours on each instrument.

Dan Schubert & Leann Kane both work at the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy. Dan is the directing attorney and Leann is a social worker. The mission of this department is to provide legal representation to individuals that have the right to counsel but cannot afford it on their own. This is a monumental job, one that takes thick skin and carries a heavy workload due to understaffing.
