Jason Thompson is from the Portsmouth, OH area. This is where pill mills first started anywhere in the country so he saw firsthand what opiate painkillers and ultimately heroin can do to a community as well as the greed of big pharma. Rising from the ashes of addiction he entered his recovery with vigor. The 12 step fellowship really helped him get into a life of long term recovery which is over 16 years. He has made a career in the behavioral health field. With a Masters degree in social work, he treats both adolescents and adults with mental health and addiction challenges.

Ben Ertel joined us in the studio to tell his story of courage, strength and hope. During our episode, he describes his upbringing in Cincinnati. His childhood was great but he felt like he could never fit in and never really let others into his life. To combat this, he became a master of disguise and brought whichever “Ben” was needed for a given situation. “I was always a different actor in a different play.” Ben went to Washington D.C. to take an intern position for a congressman. This is where his drinking began to escalate. He got in a car wreck resulting in an injury and so began a journey with pain pills and ultimately heroin. After a brief time living on the streets and out of his car, Ben got his second chance at life. His recovery took off and he has now made it a career. Since 2015 Ben has been in business development inside the treatment industry. He is extremely good at his job and was made to do this work. He works with families and individuals and tailors a plan that is the best for each person. He has helped hundreds of families and will continue to make a positive impact in the recovery community.

Dr. Kang is a clinical psychologist and the Director of Operations for the Behavioral Health Service Line for the Cincinnati Region of Mercy Health, the largest health system in Ohio. He led a diverse, community-facing team in forming the Mercy Health Addiction Treatment Collaborative, a multi-agency treatment-on-demand network of care for addiction medicine services across southwest Ohio. In 2017, the Mercy Health Foundation awarded Dr. Kang its Clinician of the Year Award. In 2018, the Obama Foundation selected Dr. Kang for its inaugural Fellowship class, a group of twenty civic innovators from around the world working together with their communities to build better futures. In 2019, the National Quality Forum selected Dr. Kang for its Technical Expert Panel on Opioid Use and Opioid Use Disorder and he was appointed by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine to the RecoveryOhio Advisory Council, a group tasked with redefining how the state delivers behavioral healthcare to its residents. Dr. Kang lives in Kentucky with his wife and four young children.

Chris has 13 years of sobriety and has quite a journey. He has a passion for music and was part of a band for a long time. This lifestyle got him into trouble with alcohol and drugs but the same environment ultimately helped in his recovery as well. After treatment, his band members showed great support and respect of Chris’s situation which allowed him to continue to do what he loved to do. In our time together on the podcast Chris talks about his journey through life which has ultimately resulted in a life of long term recovery. He has worked in the addiction field and has a masters degree in social work. Ultimately, he ended up back in the space he truly loves…music.
