  • Walmart Drops, Alibaba ADRs, Coty Sinks After Fourth Quarter Results

On this episode of Stock Movers:

    - Walmart (WMT) shares slide. Quarterly sales fell short of expectations, with sales at US stores open at least a year, excluding fuel, rising 2.6% in the second quarter. The company's pharmacy business was hindered by federal negotiations that led to lower drug prices, and shoppers spent less per trip during the quarter.

    - Alibaba (BABA) ADRs rise. Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.’s profit plunged more than 75% after the company increased quarterly capital spending to almost $10 billion to safeguard its position in the global AI arena. The company reported a 9% jump in revenue, but net income tumbled to 10.5 billion yuan and it registered a free-cash outflow of $6.6 billion, reflecting the rising cost of AI projects and computing infrastructure.

-Coty (COTY) shares fall on Thursday after the beauty conglomerate refrained from providing full-year guidance, predicting a “transition” period in the current fiscal year. Net revenue increased 1% to $1.27 billion, but declined 1% on a like-for-like basis, including an estimated 1% headwind from the Middle East conflict.

The company's pharmacy business was hindered by federal negotiations that led to lower drug prices, and shoppers spent less per trip during the quarter.

  • Walmart Tumbles on Comp Sales Miss, Advance Auto Sinks, Coty Falls

Today's biggest winners and losers in the stock market.

On this episode of Stock Movers:

    - Shares of Walmart (WMT) tumbled ahead of the market open after the retail giant’s quarterly sales fell short of expectations, a rare miss that’s likely to stoke concern about the leading big-box retailer decelerating alongside a slow-growing US economy. Sales at US stores open at least a year, excluding fuel, rose 2.6% in the second quarter, shy of the lowest analyst estimate compiled by Bloomberg. That rate of growth — hindered primarily by pricing pressure in its pharmacy business — is the slowest in more than six years.

    - Shares of Advanced Auto Parts (AAP) sunk in premarket trading after the parts provider reported second-quarter sales that fell short of analyst estimates. Though the company boosted its adjusted earnings per share forecast for the full year, it maintained its sales guidance, which is also below estimates at the midpoint.

    - Shares of Coty (COTY) fell after the beauty conglomerate reported fourth-quarter results. While the company’s net revenue for the quarter beat the average analyst estimate, Coty didn’t provide a full-year forecast and said it expects to provide a broader outlook following a strategic review. The company also reported a wider-than-expected loss, or a one cent earnings per share miss.

  • Deere Moves Higher, Moderna Pares Gains, Crypto Stocks Rally

Today's biggest winners and losers in the stock market.
On this episode of Stock Movers:
    - Shares of Deere & Co. (DE) moved higher in premarket trading after the company narrowed its annual profit outlook as a stabilizing agriculture sector points to a more pronounced rebound next year for farm machinery. The builder of iconic green and yellow tractors estimated net income for the fiscal year between $4.75 billion and $5 billion, compared with its previous outlook for $4.5 billion to $5 billion.
    - Shares of Moderna (MRNA) fell in early trading, paring gains from a record Wednesday session for the stock. The biotech company said a personalized cancer vaccine combined with partner Merck & Co.’s Keytruda helped cut the recurrence of melanoma in a large, late-stage trial. The study also met a key secondary goal of showing the shot could help prevent tumors from spreading to new areas of the body, the companies said in a statement Wednesday.
    - Shares of Strategy (MSTR) and other crypto-linked stocks are climbing in premarket trading as Bitcoin’s rally unleashed the biggest wave of short liquidations in records going back to 2021. The stocks were also boosted as President Trump met with crypto executives from firms including Coinbase, Payward and Blockchain.com.
