“My son is 3 - we are in Australia where guns aren't common. He LOVES playing "shooting"with nerf guns, "stick em up" etc. We don't encourage but is it anything to be concerned about as he gets older or is some of it "natural". I don't think he's going to be a shooter but more opening conversation the right way as he gets older and understands.”

BONUS 11 MARJORY STONEMAN DOUGLAS HIGH SCHOOL SHOOTING

PARKLAND, FLORIDA

February 14th, 2018 Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida joined the club that no school wants to be a member of - a school name now synonymous with a horrific school shooting where the killer killed 17, 14 of them were students and injured 17.

We will be revisiting this case in depth later in the season with interviews from the parents of two of the victims; Alex Schachter, 14 and Alaina Petty also 14. 

But as this case has a live killer who is currently being sentenced we wanted to give a brief overview of where things are at currently. And we will be, later in the season, looking at how things came to that point - where a 19 year old former student of the school jumped out of an Uber and subsequently ended the lives of 17 innocent students and teachers.

TAFT HIGH SCHOOL - BULLYING 

Let’s talk about bullying - recent crime statistics in the U.S. National Crime Victimization Survey done by the American National Center for Education and the U.S. Bureau of Justice, indicated 22% of students said they had experienced bullying.

And then layer on this statistic, although there's 22%, who said they experienced bullying, they believe only 20% of bullying is reported. 

Which means most kids experience bullying in some way or another. This episode explores the idea that sometimes bullying is used as an excuse....... and it's never an excuse for shooting.

We discuss the case of Taft High School, a shooting that happened close to a month after the Sandy Hook Massacre but with very different outcomes.
