SEASON 1 EPISODE 11

ARAMOANA MASSACRE

For this, the final episode of season one, we're heading to Aramoana, a sleepy New Zealand outpost where one man has the entire town under siege for an astonishing 22 hours.

We have been focusing on US mass based shootings so far in the season, however, we know mass shootings are not unique to the Unites States. And as long as there are bad people, there's always going to be a global aspect to mass shootings.

So this week Sarah has challenged Katherine to a case that's from her old little sleepy neck of the woods in New Zealand.

Think of this episode as an FBI ride along.

We get to see how Katherine looks at a case that she's never actually seen before, And it's fascinating the salient facts that she pulls out.

On November 13th 1990, an argument between two neighbours develops resulting in one neighbour entering his house and starting on what will be a 22hour siege of Aramoana leaving 13 dead and many injured.

Do you think New Zealand gun laws are more robust than the US and how different are the gateway checks are preventing guns being accessed by killers like this in New Zealand?

Do you know how to spot someone on the pathway to VIOLENCE? Listen in to #bepartofthesolution

It was just after 1am on a Sunday morning in November 2017, a 26 year old man climbed from his car in the parking lot of this tiny first Baptist church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.

Almost immediately, he shoots at two people standing outside the church, the shooter enters through a side door and for 15 minutes, he fires indiscriminately walking up and down the aisle.

In all, 48 people were either killed or wounded.

This is the case where the reporting system failed and this individual was able to purchase several guns…….LEGALLY.

Whether you are for guns or against, it’s just NOT the point - the legal checks and balances in place to stop weapons falling into the hands of those deemed unfit are failing the communities they are there to protect.

If all you focus on are the guns, you're failing to see all the other things that you can do to stop the killing because there are so many other ways that we can prevent killings.

But prevention is the key. Only if we try to help find these potential shooters before they strike.

On April 15th, 2021, a 19 year old man, carrying two semi-automatic rifles began shooting outside of a FedEx ground facility.

He entered the business, continued to shoot people for about four minutes before turning the weapon on himself and killing himself.

So in all he killed eight people and he shot another five, a couple of other people also suffered injuries.

At first glance this looks like a case of workplace violence but as Katherine reveals the workplace could really have been any number of locations.

In fact the FBI's behavioral team said his actions were, an act of suicidal murder . Let that sink in for a moment…..an act of suicidal murder.

Everybody knows the word Columbine but do you know the real story?

In this episode we're really going to learn about two different stories about this infamous day. One is false and one that's really the true crime story.

“ Their plan was an utter failure. So when other people try to emulate them, my answer to that would be... you want to be failures?” Katherine

As soon as these two kids entered the school, they recognized that all their planning was a failure. Their whole plan is not going to be executed.

There really is no way to copycat this.

Columbine has become a rally cry for people who are troubled, an excuse to commit violence

Anytime you hear a student or a young adult talking about Columbine, you should check your hesitation at the door. You should immediately share that information with somebody, whether it's a tip line, whether it's parents, whether it's faculty, counselors, police, really all of them, even if it's a school project, share the information.

This week is the 2007 shooting on a college campus known as Virginia tech.

The  killing began at 7.30 in the morning on April 16th, 2007 in Blacksburg, Virginia.

The shooter killed two people in a dormitory on the college campus.  Then two and a half hours later, he chained the doors shut in a classroom building on the campus and he began shooting students and faculty. In all 32 people were killed and another 17 wounded, at least six other students were injured when they jumped from a second floor, classroom window in the end, the shooter committed suicide.

This case is the most important case for why not to name a shooter. It is the ultimate case where the public and the media let the shooter, even in his death, control the narrative.

The man who did this, it's totally his fault. But all of the people along the way let the guard rails down a little bit on the road  and for whatever reason, at a given time, he drove the car off the road.

Find out how we can all keep those guard rails up.

Today, we're in a movie theater and we're about to watch a premiere of a Batman movie when a 24 year old begins shooting from beside the big screen.

He has a shotgun, a rifle and a handgun with him and he kills 12 people, wounds 58 - one of the dead is a six year old girl. This is just one of the saddest parts about a day full of sorrow, but also bravery , and some really important lessons that should never be forgotten.

Would you know what to do?

This episode Katherine and Sarah discuss shooting at a music festival in Las Vegas.

It's an event, not unlike one that many of us have been to before but imagine watching your favorite country star performing when all of sudden he legs it off the stage and chaos erupts as a hail of bullets coming from an unknown location bears down on the 22,000 unsuspecting concert goers. Pure mayhem caused by pure evil.

Ask yourself, would you know how to help your injured friend survive?
