Los Angeles based hairstylists Riawna Capri and Nikki Lee met and bonded as assistants, “ripping foils” and doing the dirty work. Years later, the two run one of LA’s most successful salons, and certainly the coolest (they were the originators of the Braid Bar, after all, and trademarked it). The pair share not a large celebrity clientele---they share an enormous celebrity clientele. Celebrity clients who positively adore them and the “big sister” relationships they not only provide, but thoughtfully foster. Nine Zero One Salon has the most in-the-know, refined finger on the pulse of what’s trending in celebrity hair and are the masters of how to deliver it. Riawna and Nikki see themselves as beauty coaches, designing hair for what they call “the entire picture” of a given client and their life. Kindness and good vibes sets the tone for the salon, their working relationships, and is the philosophy by which they work + live. Down-to-earth and high end all at once, Riawna and Nikki are a dose and a breath of fresh air in the industries of Hollywood, beauty, and fashion. On this podcast we discuss the building of a salon, the ins and outs of working with celebrity clients, mixing friendship with business, juggling it all, including In Common Beauty, Hollywood hair trends, and the art of hair color. We discuss the long and the short of it when it comes to hair extensions, and the clients who have inspired them over the years. We talk about how each’s working style complements the other, and the differences in Riawna’s hippie and Nikki’s chic-in-the-city-aesthetics. They share their thoughts and expertise when it comes to social media---a large and essential part of their work. They also explain how to divide and conquer when it comes to being in business with a partner, and have sage advice for aspiring stylists when it comes to freelancing versus working at a salon and more. Two of our favorite Obsixed lists to date, Riawna and Nikki each share the six things and items they’re obsessed with right now, that you can discover and shop here:

In 2004 Thakoon Panichgul produced his first ready to wear collection. Tamara met Thakoon prior to that time, when he was working at Harper’s Bazaar and for the designer Yeohlee, and she remembers his always-strong creative point of view. On this podcast we go back to that time, and the designer recalls what was inspiring him creatively at that point in his life. Based in New York City, today Thakoon is one of the globe’s top fashion designers. The Thai-American creative visionary grew up in Nebraska, and we discuss his midwestern roots and the nod to preppy sportswear style that he’s able to bring to the latest iteration of his work, his direct to consumer collection of clothing and accessories of the same name. Thakoon has always possessed a razor sharp skill for zeroing in on the silhouettes and pieces that women want to wear now. Listen in as he talks about being known for his modern and cool prints, his love and dedication to American menswear sensibility, and his famous collab with Gap, which was documented in the now-classic fashion film, The September Issue. We talk about the influence of and his relationships with Anna Wintour and Alber Elbaz, and the women that he’s dressed, who have provided him with vast inspiration and have served as muses...women like Michelle Obama, Sienna Miller, and Alexa Chung. On this episode 80 of Story + Rain Talks, we discuss what it takes to create the high-quality pieces he’s known for---and at his current price point of $40 to $400. Thakoon talks travel, being wired for creativity, and he shares the Saturday ritual that he calls his “extra cup of coffee”. We discuss his love of easy styling, and working in a digital world where images can be easily manipulated. Thakoon talks about the time when he took a break from fashion, what it’s like to be boxed in as a designer and brand, and learning to not let anyone dictate how customers will view his collections. We talk what it takes to be a true visionary, how the fashion industry has changed, his editorial passion project and brand Hommegirls, and a lot more. This is a treasured podcast and conversation with the very best (in every sense of the word), in fashion today. Discover his #obsixed list of some favorite things here:

There’s no other way to say it. We absolutely fell in love with Andra Day, our June cover star, and you should too if you haven’t already. We've been following Andra for a while and watched her in The United States Vs Billie Holiday, but it was an interview she did recently that had us completely compelled. There is so much depth to the multi hyphenate talent that is Andra Day. And so Tamara was truly excited to be able to speak to her about her life, her creativity, and her recent work in music and film. She was excited to really get into it, and that they did. Andra's candid, soulful, spiritual, and smart. She’s funny and light and deep all at once. Listening to her talk about creativity and the creative process is inspiring. On this podcast, the singer songwriter, one time dancer (who recently put her talents to use for a closing scene waltz), and now, actress, talks all about her experience on the Lee Daniels film and the role that landed her a Golden Globe as well as a nomination for her original song Tigress And Tweed, which she tells us is the favorite song she’s written, to date. For her absolutely jaw-dropping-in-the best-way acting and singing performances, she also gained Oscar and Critic’s Choice nominations, and just two days ago she won a BET award for Best Actress. Andra talks finding her voice (and catch her singing a line or two), the musicians she deems “the foundation of music” who have inspired her, as well as those she’s worked with in recent years on songs like Pearl Cadillac and Phone Dies. And we talk about the astounding influence of what’s come to be her anthem, Rise Up. We talk at great length about being Billie Holiday, and the certain parts of her that she doesn’t want to let go of---and how she’s had to accept that aspects of her will never go away. We talk her relationship with Lee Daniels whom she calls a “collaborative partner, spirit, brother, family member", and the preordained way in which she took on her role in his film. Of course, we get into Billie’s iconic style, and in a particularly honest moment she talks about being attracted to her co stars and working through that. Andra shares the scoop on the role she’s working on next with Lee, a project she tells us is “different” for him. On the personal side, we talk the relationship she’s currently in, relationships at large, and she dispels that rumor about Brad Pitt. We talk about what’s up next for Andra in music, being happy, and her family. We're honored to share this really close look into an artist during a supremely pivotal point in her career. And yes, we close with her #obsixed list of favorite things and projects, that you can discover and shop here:
1. ‘Phone Dies’ by Andra Day
2. The United States vs. Billie Holiday
3. Fluff Yeah Slide by Ugg
4. VICE NO. 6 Candle from by Vice

On this podcast we’re talking about the art of intuition and more with someone our founder and Editor in Chief Tamara Rappa has known for a while. Deganit Nuur is a world renowned spiritual teacher, clairvoyant intuitive, acupuncturist, writer and speaker. Since they first met, Deganit has been named one of the Top 15 Intuitives Worldwide by Goop, and has been featured on the Today Show, Good Morning America, Forbes, and The New York Times. She works with a lot of thought leaders and celebrities, and over the years we've admired her drive and her mission, as she’s gone from practicing to teaching thousands. Her mission? Be Light. An Iranian-Jewish immigrant who landed in Fresno, California, Deganit experienced a traumatic upbringing and was surrounded by visible domestic violence. On this podcast she shares her creative response and heart warming role to those around her when she was a child, and she believes that world peace starts with inner peace. We talk about her love of teaching and her love of writing. She has a book in the works, and we discuss how her work with countless broken adults has propelled her to teach children, in which she finds inspiration and hope for our future. We discuss the custom curriculum she created with her Nuurvana Method Of Clairvoyant Healing, and she explains something called “psychic tv”. Deganit wants people to understand that change is the only constant, and that everything is impermanent. Tamara can attest to Deganit’s powerful gift, but whether you believe in psychic ability or not, there is much to learn about cultivating your own intuition, and more, from this incredibly special healer who loves and values community, and believes with all of her mind, body, and soul—-that we’re all in this together. Determined to make a contribution and serve up some joy and laughter during the Covid 19 pandemic, Chelsea ’s touring the country this year in her latest stand up, aptly titled “Evolution” which you can catch on HBO Max.
