True patience is not passive. It is an active endurance that is rooted in faith. Psalm 37 reminds us to commit our way to the Lord, to trust in Him, and to wait patiently for Him. Isaiah 40:31 assures us that those who wait upon the Lord will renew their strength and mount up with wings like eagles. Far from being weakness, patience is strength because it rests in the sovereignty and goodness of God. Patience requires humility. A patient person understands that he does not deserve better than what God has given, and that even trials are part of God’s wise and good plan. When our expectations are shaped by Scripture, we recognize that we live in a fallen world filled with frustrations and fallen people, and yet God is working all things together for the good of His people and the glory of His name.

What does the Bible really teach about sanctification and the Christian life? Many Christians find themselves confused when it comes to spiritual growth. Some are taught that sanctification is all about strict rule-keeping, obedience to countless external standards, and working out their faith entirely in their own strength. Others are told to simply “let go and let God,” as if Christian growth requires no discipline, no striving, and no intentional effort. But neither of these extremes represents true sanctification according to Scripture. This path of sanctification is the Christian’s daily calling, fueled by God’s Spirit and centered on Christ. As we grow in Christ, we pursue holiness and obedience with humility and gratitude, knowing that apart from Christ we can do nothing. True sanctification always begins with the grace of God and flows into obedience that bears the fruit of the Spirit.

Dr. Caldwell highlights that Christian growth is both active and dependent. Believers discipline themselves for the purpose of godliness, but always in reliance on God’s grace and strength. Growth in holiness requires spiritual discipline, daily Bible intake, prayer, and obedience to God’s Word. Good, right, and fitting exhortations about obedience, duty, and discipline is not legalism. It is not legalistic to take God’s commands seriously. Obeying God’s Word is part of Christian discipleship and Christian maturity. At the same time, sanctification is not passivity. Quietism, or the idea that we simply sit still and wait for God to sanctify us apart from effort, is not biblical sanctification. God calls us to active Christian faithfulness and grace fueled effort as we walk in submission to Christ. Dr. Caldwell makes clear that obedience and grace are not enemies. Christian maturity comes when believers understand that sanctification is God’s work in us that also calls for our faithful response. We’re not just thinking, we’re acting and we’re not just acting, we’re thinking. Both these things will be present in our lives of worship. This balance keeps us from the errors of moralism and quietism and points us to true sanctification that glorifies Christ.

Sometimes this doctrine is spoken of as eternal security or with the phrase once saved always saved. But Pastor Caldwell explains that while the phrase may capture something true, it is often misunderstood and even misused. The focus of perseverance is not on a moment in the past when someone prayed a prayer or made a decision, but on the ongoing reality of Christian endurance. Genuine believers continue to walk with Christ, not because of their own strength, but because of the power of God who preserves His people. So, the preservation of the saints explains the perseverance of the saints.

Yet, the Scriptures make it clear that Christians are not promised a life free from hardship. On the contrary, we are told that all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will face persecution. Trials, tribulations, and suffering are part of the Christian life. Yet in these very struggles, we see the reality of perseverance in trials and perseverance in suffering. Believers discover that the faith God has granted is not extinguished by difficulties. Instead, through hardships, doubts, and even seasons of weakness, God upholds His people and proves their faith to be genuine. This is where the doctrine of perseverance through persecution becomes deeply encouraging, showing that even in the hardest circumstances, God preserves believers by His Spirit and His Word.

Dr. Caldwell highlights the difference between a distorted view of eternal security and the biblical understanding of perseverance. Many grew up hearing once saved always saved presented as a guarantee disconnected from any evidence of obedience, repentance, or love for God. But Scripture presents something much richer. Perseverance in faith is always linked to walking with Christ, loving Him, and keeping His commandments. It is not that our endurance saves us, but that our endurance demonstrates that we have truly been saved. The warnings in Scripture against falling away serve to remind us that true assurance is found in continuing to trust Christ to the very end.

So what kind of confidence can believers have? Dr. Caldwell answers that we can look back at our lives and see the tokens of God’s grace. We see our love for Christ, our repentance from sin, our growth in holiness, and our continued faith even when tested. These things assure us that God has done a real work in our hearts. While persevering faith tested may feel weak in the moment, it is still real, and it is evidence of the Spirit’s work in us. In the end, the persevering and preserving work of the Holy Spirit is about God keeping us safe in His hand, ensuring that we reach our eternal inheritance. In this conversation, Dr. Caldwell explains that true Christian masculinity is not about stereotypes or extremes. Instead, biblical manhood is rooted in God’s Word and modeled after Christ Himself.

While the word patriarchy is often associated today with male dominance or misogyny, the Bible speaks of biblical headship. In fact, husbands are called to lead their wives with Christlike leadership, loving them as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her.

Fathers are called to raise sons who know what it means to act like men. Mothers affirm and undergird this calling, and the church provides teaching and discipleship that reinforces it. Biblical manhood is not defined by sports, careers, or hobbies, but by living faithfully under God’s design.

The conversation also looks back to Adam and Eve in Genesis. Adam was given responsibility before Eve was created. He was commanded to obey God, to exercise headship over creation, and to lead. Yet in the fall, Adam abdicated this role when he listened to the voice of his wife and failed to protect and lead her. This failure shows the importance of biblical authority and headship, not as authoritarianism but as responsibility and obedience to God’s Word. True Christian masculinity includes the fruit of the Spirit. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, and self-control all shape what it means to act like a man according to the Bible. Men are called to be strong, to provide, to protect, and to lead with courage, but all of this must be carried out in a way that reflects Christlike manhood. Authority is never for self-exaltation or selfish gain. Every husband, father, and leader is himself under authority—under the authority of Christ.

Dr. Caldwell warns against embracing worldly views of patriarchy and authority that distort the Bible’s teaching. When men use their role to diminish or demean women, they dishonor God. When they refuse to lead or give away their responsibility, they also fall short of God’s design. The balance is found in submitting to Christ and leading with humility, courage, and sacrificial love. Is it right to feel shame over them, or should they be seen as reminders of the grace of God in salvation?

Dr. Caldwell explains that salvation is both legal and experiential. Legally, we are justified, declared righteous by faith alone in Christ alone. Experientially, we are made new. Scripture teaches that we are a new creation in Christ. Old things have passed away, and all things have become new. Yet while our position in Christ is secure, believers still live with the reality of indwelling sin. This means battling sin as a Christian is part of the daily walk of sanctification. Christians are dead to sin and alive to God in Christ, but they must still put on spiritual armor and make choices that reflect their new life.

But Dr. Caldwell clarifies that these two commands summarize the entire moral law—however, they do not replace it. Every specific command of Scripture reflects those two great commandments and cannot be discarded in favor of a vague concept of love. Their conversation then shifts toward the deeper theological implications of James Talarico’s Christian worldview. Dr. Caldwell highlights how the Word of God, not emotional reasoning, is the true test of a believer’s understanding. He addresses concerns over pluralism, fairness, and whether exposing students to Scripture harms those from other religious backgrounds. His answer is grounded in truth and compassion: exposing people to the law of God is not to do them harm—it is something that does them good. So, no one’s child is being harmed by being exposed to the truth of God’s Word.

Dr. Caldwell also engages with James Talarico’s gospel presentation, or lack thereof, explaining that the moral law is not meant to elevate man, but to humble him and lead him to grace. In referencing 1 John and Romans 13, the discussion emphasizes that righteousness cannot be redefined through cultural lenses or political talking points. God and His word define righteousness, and we need to be faithful to that. We’re all tested, every one of us, by our faithfulness to God’s words. If at any point in the rest of our lives, we depart from the words of God, we are to no longer to be trusted. Representative James Talarico is failing in this already.
