In this week’s episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, host Dr. Josh Philpot sits down with Dr. Richard Caldwell to explore the truth about immigration and the Bible, seeking to answer these pressing questions with biblical clarity and theological conviction. Drawing from passages like Acts 17, he reminds us that God is the one who established borders and appointed the times and places in which people live. A biblical view on immigration does not ignore this truth, nor does it encourage the erasure of nations or national identity. As Revelation 5 reveals God is saving people from every tribe and tongue and nation. He created them, He sustains them, has a plan for them, and does not obliterate all earthly distinctions or all natural distinctions as He saves.

One of the central concerns raised is whether Christians should obey immigration law even when they feel sympathy for refugees or illegal immigrants. Dr. Caldwell argues that Christian compassion and law are not enemies. The Bible calls us to love our neighbor, but it never teaches us to do so by promoting lawlessness. Lawlessness isn’t love, he says. In fact, true biblical love points people to righteousness and ultimately to Christ. Christians are called to uphold the rule of law while also displaying the compassion and love of Christ toward all people.

The episode also takes on the novel narrative that “Jesus was a refugee,” and common arguments that the command to “love the sojourner” in the Bible demand political activism in favor of open borders. But Dr. Caldwell shows that these Old Testament texts are often taken out of context. He highlights that in the nation of Israel sojourners were required to assimilate into the religious and moral fabric of the nation. They were not allowed to come in and live according to their own customs. They were not permitted to bring in foreign gods or violate God’s law regarding worship. Instead, they had to adopt the standards of the nation they entered and abide by their laws. That is not what is happening now with immigration, there is not a one-to-one correspondence.

So then, what should the Christian response be to immigration in today’s context? How far does love your neighbor as yourself extend to somebody who’s here illegally? It begins with a distinction between national policy and personal ethics. We can love them as individuals and seek to meet immediate needs they may have as we can, as well as sharing the gospel with them. And while we may grieve the hardships these illegal immigrants face, that does not mean we oppose law enforcement or undermine the legal process. Dr. Caldwell encourages believers to pursue a path that reflects both evangelism and immigration responsibility—a path where the Gospel is offered freely to all, but not at the expense of justice and order.

He also speaks directly to those in the church who may be undocumented. With pastoral care and honesty, he advises them to take steps toward legal status, and encourages churches to walk with these individuals, providing help where possible. The goal is to live with a clear conscience before God and man.

In closing, Dr. Caldwell reminds us that our hope is not found in political solutions or border policies. Our hope is in Christ. And while we can celebrate that our churches may include people from many nations and backgrounds, borders in the Bible are not erased for the sake of man-made unity. True unity is found in the Gospel—where every tribe, tongue, and nation is represented in worship of the one true God.

But truth and boldness without humility becomes destructive. Ministry without love is not ministry at all.

So, should Christians always speak up? The answer lies in understanding our calling, knowing the truth of God’s Word, and being led by the Spirit in every situation. Not every moment demands a loud response—but every moment demands faithfulness to God, not man.
