Christians even battle contentment in marriage, questioning whether they made the right choice for their spouse. Dr. Caldwell reminds us that contentment is not about circumstances, it’s about devotion. Worship is the foundation of contentment. When we worship God rightly, we recognize that He is enough no matter what our situation might seem to be. We do not find contentment in wealth, success, or relationships, we find it in Christ alone. 

But is it wrong to want more? Some people believe that contentment means giving up on ambition, while others think striving for financial success is sinful. 1 Timothy 6:10 tells us that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evils, but does that mean having wealth is sinful? What about those who have been financially blessed? Dr. Caldwell informs us that the Bible teaches that having wealth is not a sin, but being controlled by it is. A person can be wealthy and content, or they can be poor and discontent because true satisfaction is found in trusting God.

Dr. Caldwell challenges us with this question: Do you trust God enough to be content with what you have? If your joy is tied to money, status, circumstances, a place, or your spouse, then your satisfaction is misplaced. We need to find our satisfaction and contentment in God, not in things, places, or people. God calls us to be faithful stewards with whatever He gives us, in whatever circumstances or station in life that He appoints us. As Psalm 16:5-6 tells us, “The LORD is the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You support my lot. The measuring lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; Indeed, my inheritance is beautiful to me.” Let us then be thankful and enjoy the things the Lord provides for us here, but find our real joy, satisfaction, and contentment in Him as we keep our focus on eternal things, not temporal things.

Either of those ways reflects a fleshy way of living and neglects to see the biblical vision of manhood set forth by the Bible. Compare and Contrast –
Many young men today, disillusioned with feminism and the cultural rejection of masculinity, are turning to figures like Andrew Tate for guidance on what it means to be a man. Tate and others in the manosphere promote a vision of masculinity that emphasizes dominance, self-promotion, and material success. But is this truly biblical? In a world confused about what it means to be a man, Christian masculinity must be shaped by the Word of God, not by culture. Dr. Caldwell explains how Christian masculinity is not defined by arrogance, control, or brute strength but by servant leadership modeled after Christ; it is not by way of dominance and power. He contrasts the alpha male vs. biblical manhood debate with Scripture, pointing out that leadership in the Christian home is to be Christlike leadership that manifests itself with a self-sacrificial love, thus reflecting how Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5). Dr. Caldwell points out that the larger portion of this Ephesians passage is addressed to husbands and is not about leadership but love. The words in Ephesians 5:25 are not, “husbands lead your wives,” but “husbands love your wives”. Many men today misuse the biblical passages about submission in marriage to justify authoritarian leadership while neglecting the Bible’s clear commands to love their wives as Christ loved the church. Whether the world pressures men to be passive or pushes them toward hyper-masculine dominance, the Bible presents a better way—one of Christlike leadership, biblical love in marriage, and sacrificial responsibility.

Biblical Headship vs. Cultural Extremes –
The conversation highlights two major distortions of biblical manhood in today’s world:

1. The Passive Husband– Men who, in response to feminism, have abdicated their Christian husband leadership, failing to lead, protect, and provide for their families.
2. The Hyper-Masculine Alpha Male– Men who, in rejecting the culture’s attack on masculinity, swing too far in the other direction, becoming authoritarian, harsh, and self-centered in their leadership.

Dr. Caldwell warns that Christian men and culture have often been shaped more by worldly ideologies than by Scripture. Whether it’s an emasculated, passive leadership or an oppressive, heavy-handed approach, both fail to reflect the biblical love in marriage that God commands. Instead, the Bible calls men to lead with humility, putting the needs of their families before their own desires and ambitions.

What does Christian leadership look like?
So then, what does Christian manhood and responsibility truly look like? Dr. Caldwell explains that leadership in the home isn’t about exerting control; it’s about faithfulness, selflessness, and sacrificial love. True biblical leadership means:
•Loving your wife in a way that reflects Christ’s love for the church.
•Providing and protecting without resorting to dominance or manipulation.
•Rejecting worldly definitions of masculinity that focus on wealth, power, and control.
•Embracing humility and grace, leading through servanthood rather than selfish ambition.

Dr. Caldwell challenges men to ask themselves: Are you putting yourself second for the benefit of your wife and children? Are you taking the colder side of the hill? Are you taking the harder part of the responsibility? Are you leading by sacrifice?

Rejecting the world’s definition of masculinity –
The podcast also addresses the rise of feminism and Christianity and how some Christian men have reacted to cultural shifts by adopting an aggressive, overbearing approach to marriage and leadership. Dr. Caldwell explains that while the Bible does teach male headship, it does not condone the alpha male mentality that some have adopted in response to cultural pressures. Instead of embracing worldly models of masculinity—whether passive or hyper-aggressive—Christian men are called to reflect the character of Christ. The biblical model of manhood rejects both extremes and seeks to honor God in the home, in marriage, and in the church.

The role of the Church in teaching biblical manhood –
Dr. Caldwell also warns against seeking guidance from YouTube influencers regarding manhood, patriarchy, and all the rest instead of the local church. There’s even a lack of the biblical understanding of patriarchy because there’s a lack of understanding of ecclesiology and the role of the local church. Definitions matter, and where we get those definitions matters, so being part of a faithful local church where the Bible is faithfully taught is important. He also emphasizes the importance of Christian relationships and discipleship within the church, urging men to learn about Christian husband leadership from pastors and godly mentors rather than secular voices.

The challenge is to be loving and respectful in our witness while being courageous and faithful to accurately represent the Scriptures, upholding the truths in Scripture and not watering them down. We are to please God and not men; the church is the pillar and support of the truth. We need to be faithful in declaring the whole counsel of God and not shrink back in fear of man, remembering that the Word of God goes forth and does not return void.

•Biblical Response to Transgenderism: The discussion makes clear that a proper and true biblical response to transgenderism is not to marginalize or condemn individuals but, it’s to lovingly present God’s design to them, being clear convictional and forthright. By emphasizing that God’s Word is the final authority, the panel encourages believers to engage culture with both grace and uncompromising truth. Love always rejoices in the truth, as 1 Corinthians 13:6 says. Love and truth are not at odds; they are intimate friends. We love people best by speaking the truth to them. 
 
This episode serves as a call to the church to reexamine its stance on these issues in light of the clear, timeless teachings of Scripture. The panelists remind us that while many modern arguments attempt to blur the distinctions between the sexes, the Bible remains unwavering. Is choosing not to have children a biblical decision? Can a Christian couple decide to remain childless simply for personal convenience, career ambitions, or lifestyle choices? The Bible describes children as a gift from the Lord and a heritage (Psalm127:3-5). Yet, in today’s culture, many view children as a burden rather than a blessing. The modern emphasis on financial security, travel, career growth, and personal freedom often pushes people to delay or forgo having children altogether. This mindset has even crept into the church, where some believers have adopted the world’s perspective on marriage and family rather than God’s. In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpott discuss the growing trend of childless marriages, particularly among young Christians. Their discussion also covers couples who are calling themselves DINKs (Dual Income, No Kids), whether childless marriages are ever a good thing, and what Scripture has to say about marriage, family, and procreation.

Dr. Caldwell says that childless marriages could be a good thing if they were just a result of God’s sovereign providential work in our lives. He explains that infertility or health issues can prevent some couples from having children, yet these situations and circumstances are within God’s sovereignty. And most certainly, those marriages could be good, godly, and satisfying. However, the choice to reject having children and become parents out of a mindset of convenience reflects a cultural view rather than a biblical worldview. Both rejecting and not understanding God’s design for marriage, children, and families have contributed to the incredible and saddening decline in birth rates here in the United States and across the world. The Scriptures call believers to trust in God’s provision, viewing marriage and children as part of His good design for human flourishing.

Many young couples believe that delaying having children or avoiding them altogether leads to a more fulfilling life. But does a life without children really bring the satisfaction people expect? Dr. Caldwell challenges this notion with Scriptural truths, emphasizing that true joy is found in obedience to God’s design rather than personal and selfish ambition. The modern culture devalues parenthood and prioritizes self-fulfillment over biblical responsibility. We see this not only in declining birth rates but also in the increasing rates of abortion, declining marriage rates, and the redefinition of family roles. But when Christians allow these worldly perspectives to shape their decisions, the church suffers. When believers don’t view having children as God’s design, they lack understanding and the desire to be used by God in raising another generation that knows the Lord, loves the Lord, and seeks to glorify God. This can lead to smaller families and a lack of young families actively participating in church life and, potentially, to a decreasing congregation and less vitality over time. The church will suffer by experiencing a decline in future generations of believers.

Dr. Caldwell says we need to examine what the Scripture teaches about marriage, raising the next generation, and what biblical generational living consists of. He walks through a portion of Psalm 127 to help us gain a better perspective. Without parents in godly homes raising the next generation, he asks, who will continue the faith? While some might say that the biblical command to “Be fruitful and multiply” (Genesis 1:28) was only relevant to Adam and Eve, or maybe they’ll even go as far as to Noah and his children, Dr. Caldwell assures us that the creation mandate still stands because this is our Father’s world. Throughout Scripture, in both the Old and New Testaments, children remain a central part of God’s plan for families, nations, and His kingdom. We can’t betray the truth of God’s word without devastating consequences. Our mindset needs to be biblical with an eternal perspective, not a temporal one.

Dr. Caldwell calls believers to examine their motives behind choosing a childless marriage. He asks them if they are being influenced by God’s Word or by the self-focused values of the culture. The biblical understanding of marriage and family embraces children as a blessing, not a burden, and welcomes them as gifts and rewards from the Lord. Both Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Philpot share some personal examples of how there is long-term joy, fulfillment, and tremendous blessings found in raising children. If Christians neglect these truths, we risk prioritizing personal comfort and self-satisfaction over God’s greater purpose.

Dr. Caldwell also addresses those who long for children but are unable to have them. Infertility is not a sign of spiritual failure, nor does it mean a marriage is incomplete. God’s sovereignty governs all things, and in such cases, couples can still live fruitful lives, investing in the next generation through adoption, discipleship, and spiritual mentorship.

In conclusion, their discussion challenges us to carefully think about what we believe and why we believe it. Some questions we need to consider are: What’s our view of life? What’s our view of children? What’s our view of taking care of our parents? Dr. Caldwell says all of this is either going to be informed from above, heavenly wisdom, from the Word of God, or that which is earthly, natural, and demonic, according to the book of James.

What does it mean to trust God in the face of devastating loss and tragedy? Recent wildfires in California have left countless individuals grappling with the destruction of homes, loss of life, and, for some the shattering of generational legacies. How should Christians respond to such overwhelming circumstances? Can we find purpose and joy amidst hardship and loss? This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot address these questions, providing a biblical perspective on suffering, God’s sovereignty, and the believer’s response to disaster.

The Bible makes it clear that this world is not our home. It teaches that we live in a fallen world marred by sin and the curse, which manifests in natural disasters, personal tragedies, and societal brokenness. Dr. Caldwell reminds us that while Christians are not exempt from the pain and hardships of this world, we endure them with the knowledge of God’s unchanging goodness and His eternal purposes. Reflecting on Romans 8:28, we are assured that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him. This means that every trial, no matter how painful, is part of His plan to conform us to the image of Christ and bring glory to His name.

Drawing on examples from Scripture, such as Joseph and Job, Dr. Caldwell highlights how suffering serves as a tool for sanctification, producing endurance, character, and hope. Joseph’s declaration in Genesis 50:20, “What you meant for evil, God meant for good,” reminds us that God is sovereign over all circumstances. Job’s journey through immense loss teaches us that even when we cannot understand the “why” of our suffering, we can trust the “Who” behind it.

But what about the immediate pain and grief? Dr. Caldwell emphasizes that God’s Word offers us comfort, clarity, and a stable foundation in times of crisis. We need to remember that in this fallen world, we face difficulties that are common to all mankind. Yet, while these difficulties and losses are sometimes greater than others and are often filled with pain and sorrow, we are not alone in them. We are not outside of God’s sovereignty, concern, and care. When homes and possessions are lost, believers can cling to the truth that our ultimate treasure is in Christ. In Revelation 2:9, the Lord speaks to the believers at the church in Smyrna and acknowledges his knowledge of their poverty, yet he immediately adds the words, “But you are rich.” These believers are suffering in that moment, including material loss because of their faith in Jesus Christ. The Lord’s comfort to them included the knowledge that they are spiritually and eternally rich. That has to be our mindset as well when we’re going through our difficulties. Even in times of great loss and material poverty, we are rich because we possess the inestimable riches of salvation in Jesus Christ.

The discussion also touches on how a societal paganistic worldview that worships the creation over the Creator leads to practical decisions that can put people in danger. Dr. Caldwell believes that a lot of what takes place in the environmental movement in the name of global warming and all the rest ends up having practical, devastating effects sometimes in communities and even exacerbates suffering. He explains that a biblical worldview provides the proper lens for understanding our role as stewards of God’s creation while avoiding the errors of paganism and misplaced priorities. A biblical worldview is at the foundation of everything that is healthy and right. Where you go astray from the standpoint of God’s revealed truth, devastation follows every time.

This episode calls us to trust God’s sovereignty and care but also encourages us to rejoice in Him, even amidst trials. The difficulties of Job and Joseph are discussed, but Dr. Caldwell also discusses Asaph and Psalm 73 and the importance of gaining the right perspective and being able to rejoice. Dr. Caldwell walks through how believers can find joy not in their circumstances but in the eternal purposes of God. He also reminds us that our suffering equips us to minister to others as we pass on the comfort we have received from the Lord (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). Ultimately, the conversation is a reminder that God’s character is unchanging. The same God who faithfully cared for Joseph, Job, and countless others in Scripture is the God who sustains us today. Everything we go through in our lives has a purpose. That purpose is ultimately for God’s glory and for our good, and one day, our lives will testify to the goodness, grace, and mercy of God. By anchoring ourselves in the truth of His Word, we can face disaster with faith, knowing that our suffering has both temporal and eternal significance.

Gender, marriage, and sexuality—are three words that frame much of our cultural conversation today. In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Josh Philpot and Pastor Richard Caldwell discuss the upcoming conference at Founders Baptist Church – “Speaking the Truth in Love,” and its topic: Gender, Marriage and Sexuality, which is the same subject which first launched this conference nearly a decade ago. Their discussion centers on what has happened as a result of the 2016 Obergefell decision that first legalized same-sex marriage nationwide, how things have changed since then, and why these issues remain pressing for Christians and local churches. They additionally seek to answer whether believers have become more open-minded on gender identity while losing biblical clarity, or has the Church learned to speak truth with greater courage? Tune in to hear more about how Christians and the Church can remain faithful, unapologetic, and yet gracious in the face of cultural pressure on these issues.

Pastor Caldwell points out how some pastors and teachers have adapted their messages in hopes of appealing to a broader cultural audience—often compromising foundational doctrines along the way. Others stood firm and have successfully held the line for biblical truth. Pastor Caldwell confirms, as Dr. Philpot mentioned, that Founders Baptist Church added explicit statements on gender, marriage, and sexuality to its Constitution and bylaws to ensure clarity, aligning these statements with Scripture as the final authority. He explains that the Church, serving as the “pillar and support of the truth,” must hold firmly to Scripture’s teaching no matter the cost. Referencing Romans 12, he highlights that believers are called not to conform to the world’s mold but to stand boldly for the faith once for all delivered to the saints. The church needs to be courageous, unashamed, and unapologetic in its fidelity to the truth of the Scriptures. What the Bible says doesn’t change, it is true in every generation, in every season of life.

Dr. Philpott recalls the cultural whirlwind of 2016, where these issues of gender dysphoria, transgender activism, and redefinitions of marriage began surging in popular media. In the years following, political voices and secular commentators alike have emerged, questioning the logic of affirming what they see as obvious biological realities. Ironically, Dr. Caldwell notes that it is often those outside the evangelical sphere—like politicians or cultural pundits—who speak out courageously and boldly to decry the trend, whereas some in the Church have “jelly-fished” on key points of doctrine for fear of backlash or loss of popularity. However, the language being used by those inside the church and those outside of it doesn’t always make things clear. And language, says Pastor Caldwell, is central to this discussion.

Some use biblical language when discussing gender, marriage, and sexual ethics, while others don’t even try. But the question is, for those who are, are they using biblical definitions when discussing them, where are they getting their definitions, do they match the Scriptures? For over 2000 years, the Church has historically affirmed, based on the Scriptures, that God created humanity male and female and that marriage is a covenant union between one man and one woman. Yet some modern teachers attempt to redefine biblical concepts, claiming a version of “love” that sets aside what the Scriptures consistently teach. Pastor Caldwell urges believers to look at two key factors: Is the language biblical with the definitions matching the Scriptures, and is it the historic understanding of the Church? If not, then we are dealing with a distortion of truth. The local church, says Pastor Caldwell, is a community of redeemed, baptized people (who are regenerate, at least by profession) who hold the Word of God as the ultimate authority

Near the end of the conversation, Dr. Philpott reads the statement that Founders Baptist made and adopted as a church and brought into their statement of faith and constitution bylaws: The Statement on Gender and Sexuality states that any form of sexual immorality including but not limited to adultery, fornication, homosexual behavior, bisexual conduct, transgenderism, bestiality, incest, and the use of pornography is a sin according to God’s Word and violates the biblical description of manhood and womanhood as reflected in the image and nature of God (Gen. 1; Matt. 15; 1 Cor. 6). Affirming that Scripture stands above cultural trends, both hosts encourage churches everywhere to craft clear statements that uphold God’s Word as the final authority on these crucial issues. To treat the church like a community of acceptance for anyone who wants to be there means you’ve totally misunderstood what the church is. He cautions against any “attractional” approach that seeks cultural acceptance over biblical faithfulness, reminding believers that it is not loving to ignore or distort the truth. One of the things that Founders Baptist hopes to do in the upcoming conference is to have multiple sermons that dig down on this subject matter and help God’s people see clearly what the Bible actually teaches about all these things.

What is false assurance of salvation? How can we know if our faith is genuine rather than a mere intellectual assent or a superficial profession of faith? Are there clear biblical marks that distinguish authentic, Spirit-wrought belief from a hollow confidence that leads to eternal disappointment? Is it enough to have prayed a prayer once, been baptized, or served faithfully in a local church for decades? Or does the Bible instruct us to examine our current spiritual condition, ensuring that what we believe and how we live truly align with God’s Word?

This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, host Dr. Josh Philpot sits down with Pastor Richard Caldwell of Founders Baptist Church to address a critical and often misunderstood issue: false assurance. Building from passages like Matthew 7, where Jesus warns that many will say, “Lord, Lord,” and yet be turned away, Dr. Caldwell unpacks how true assurance of salvation differs radically from a counterfeit confidence. Dr. Caldwell emphasizes that genuine assurance does not rely solely on looking backward at a distant decision—“I asked Jesus into my heart,” “I prayed that prayer,” or “I signed that card”—but rather looking at the present reality and future hope. Are you following Christ now? Do you love His Word and His church today? Is there increasing holiness, humility, loyalty, and devotion that reflect the Holy Spirit’s supernatural work within you? Conversely, false assurance often ignores glaring issues: persistent, unrepentant sin, lack of love for God and others, absence of true spiritual growth, or a misplaced confidence in one’s own moral achievements rather than in Christ’s finished work.

The remedy for false assurance lies in an honest, Scripture-informed self-examination. As Dr. Caldwell points out, 1 John is a wonderful place to begin evaluating your faith. The apostle John lays out marks of genuine salvation that include obedient love for God, love for fellow believers, and ongoing fellowship with the truth. This process should not drive us to despair, but rather to Christ, who is the object of saving faith. Real assurance is found when our doctrine is correct, our lives are being changed by the Holy Spirit, and the love of God is evident in our hearts. True believers find their confidence in Christ alone, delighting in the doctrines of salvation not as mere facts but as the life-giving narrative of redemption that has captured their affections and reshaped their entire existence.

On the other hand, a person laboring under false assurance may speak all the right words, attend all the right services, and even agree with all the right doctrines on paper—yet lack that living, loving relationship with Christ. Their walk is missing the love that binds the doctrinal and experiential elements together. Without that supernatural transformation, any assurance remains hollow.
