It doesn’t require uniformity on every doctrinal matter, but when it comes to ecclesiology, ministry philosophy and core theological issues, it does. Dr. Caldwell highlights that first-tier doctrinal issues are non-negotiable, second-tier issues characterize a particular church or group of churches so much that if you disagree on these, it will be very difficult to work together, third-tier differences can be navigated with charity while still being able to serve together. The ability to work through these distinctions is a mark of spiritual maturity. It reveals humility and respect, along with fostering unity among church leaders. Grounded in the teaching that Christ is the head of the church, church leadership teams function best when operating as a plurality of biblically qualified elders (See 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1). This plurality is not egalitarian but structured with clear roles, creating what he calls “functional order.” Functional order ensures that each pastor serves in line with his unique gifting while contributing to the unity and effectiveness of the team. The discussion moves to essential qualities for building a successful pastoral team. 

Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Philpot also address the need for humility and sensitivity to spiritual maturity. Humility is foundational to the health of any team. True spiritual leadership begins with humility, whether in the home, the church, or the broader ministry. Dr. Caldwell challenges pastors to model respect for authority in every sphere, demonstrating godly character to their families, fellow leaders, and congregations. A role of authority must never be entrusted to someone who has not demonstrated they can be under authority. Men filling these positions need to be men who demonstrate their sensitivity and respect for spiritual authority. They’ve got to be able to allow the men who are qualified to evaluate their giftedness to find out what they’re meant to do in a particular realm of ministry. For example, the senior pastor’s role involves shepherding other shepherds, an oversight that offers guidance and support while trusting those men to fulfill their responsibilities. And oversight, while necessary, should never devolve into micromanagement. Just because we have different functional roles doesn’t mean that we have less importance, because we have different functional roles doesn’t mean less respect for the office or less respect for the man. Each man is a gift from the Lord to His church. The mindset of a healthy ministry staff towards each other needs to be one of gratefulness, love, and appreciation for each other. There’s nothing more desirable and to be more treasured than spiritual unity in a group of church leaders, a congregation or in a home.

For small churches hiring their first additional staff member, Dr. Caldwell advises prioritizing finding a man who can lead well in music that is theologically sound as a pastor/shepherd, because the team of preaching and singing is powerful. But whatever the role is that these men are functioning in, it needs to be viewed in the context of the overall church and for the health of the overall church. Every pastor must see their ministry as part of the greater mission of the local church, with clarity and humility. That mindset has to be embraced by everyone, it’s one church, one Lord, one chief shepherd, then we don’t confuse our roles because clarity is unity. Functional order leads to the unity of the church.

Would this need to be handled in the way that Dr. Caldwell has already discussed? Dr. Caldwell addresses this by suggesting that fathers, though given ultimate responsibility in family leadership, should support the mother’s role and authority, especially since she may better understand the context of the situation. Dr. Caldwell also addresses some challenges that arise when politics and faith converge. He warns against the dangers of conflating Christian identity with political ideology. We’ve got to be clear about what Christianity is and what it isn’t. While Christians may support a political party or candidate, Dr. Caldwell emphasizes that true Christian identity is found in Christ alone, not in any political movement. He cautions against the blending of Christian language and symbolism with political rhetoric, particularly when such language is used without a genuine commitment to biblical truth. This conflation, he argues, blurs the lines between the church and political interests, potentially leading to confusion about the gospel’s true message. The church and God’s people have got to be clear with the gospel message and biblical truths.

As the discussion continues, Dr. Philpot raises the issue of whether voting in this presidential election for the democratic platform and their representative Kamala Harris could be considered sinful. Dr. Caldwell does not mince words here. He believes that the worldview of the democratic party and its platform are anti-Christian and anti-God. When they talk about love of neighbor and other such things, they distort the biblical principles and do not faithfully represent biblical love. For him, any platform that advocates for principles contrary to biblical teachings, such as the sanctity of life, marriage, homosexuality, transgenderism, etc., is incompatible with a Christian worldview. Therefore, he believes it is sinful to vote for such a platform. He explains this is not simply a matter of policy preference but of aligning one’s vote with core biblical values, and what’s missing is the lack of discernment. Conscience certainly plays a role in all this, but our consciences can be severely misinformed. Dr. Caldwell emphasizes the need for biblical saturation so that our worldview is being informed accurately and faithfully by Scripture. They stress the importance of discernment, noting that believers should not be easily swayed by political figures or movements. Instead, they should be grounded in Scripture, allowing God’s Word to shape their understanding of justice, governance, and morality. Dr. Caldwell also emphasizes the need for the church to remain distinct from political allegiances, faithfully proclaiming the gospel rather than promoting partisan agendas.

Throughout the episode, Dr. Philpot and Dr. Caldwell provide insights into maintaining a “God’s-eye view” of current events, reminding listeners of the sovereignty of God over all things, including political outcomes. Instead, the church’s focus should be on faithfully teaching the Whole Counsel of God, teaching biblical principles and how to apply them, as it aims to help believers think biblically about every aspect of life, including politics. They urge Christians to remember that their primary allegiance is to God’s kingdom and that they are pilgrims on this earth, called to represent Christ their King in all things.

This episode is a reminder that, as Christians, our hope is not rooted in any political figure but in the sovereignty of God. We are called to be faithful, discerning, and steadfast, regardless of the cultural or political winds. To do this, believers must be rooted and grounded in the Word of God, holding firmly to a biblical worldview. As they reflect on the moral insanity in society, they mention how issues like political strife, social disorder, and even disagreement and division in the church contribute to our sense of stress and unease. They remind us that God’s Word teaches us that where there is sin, there is disorder, and along with disorder comes chaos. And where these are, there will be increased feelings of stress, anxiety, and unrest, even among believers. But rather than reacting impulsively with anxiety and despair to cultural shifts and upheavals, believers must be intentional about approaching the times with a biblical mindset using the Scriptures as their guide.

They note that, historically, society has faced similar challenges, and Scripture has always provided the blueprint for faithful living, regardless of what’s happening all around us. They point to examples from the New Testament, where all kinds of sexual immorality, idolatry, murder, and hatred were going on during the writers lifetimes, just as they are in ours. Yet believers were called to live faithfully, regardless of the prevailing culture. This remains true for Christians today; it is no different, our marching orders never change.

Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Philpot also address the issue of living in the “last days,” the period of time between Christ’s ascension and His return. While some may think or believe that current events signal the “end times,” we don’t know if we are living in the last of the last days, we just don’t know that. So we don’t need to be fearfully focused on the things we don’t know. Instead, Christians must focus on being faithful in their present generation, regardless of when Christ returns. We are to actively live out the Christian life according to the Scriptures—loving God, loving and serving others, loving our families, sharing the gospel, and so forth. We are active in the sense of fulfilling our calling as believers but passive as we rest in what we don’t know.

The conversation further explores the influence of contemporary culture on the church itself, especially around topics like family and parenting. With rising fatherlessness and declining birthrates, they warn against letting societal anxieties dictate decisions on family life, urging Christians to maintain biblical views on family and child-rearing regardless of cultural shifts. They express concern that some Christians might choose not to have families due to fears about the world’s moral decline, but Dr. Caldwell says that’s embracing a form of worldliness, not a biblical one. Instead, they encourage believers to embrace and value everything the Bible teaches about children and family. We don’t know what the world will be like in five or ten years if the Lord tarries, we’re just called to be faithful, regardless of the times, as we embrace God’s good designs.

Social media’s impact on Christian behavior also comes up, with Dr. Caldwell noting that social media platforms often encourage and amplify divisive, rude, and hateful interactions, even among believers. They encourage Christians to maintain Christlike behaviors, even in their online interactions, being characterized by the fruit of the Spirit in kindness, patience, and love. Additionally, they encourage Christians to focus more on their immediate surroundings—family, church, relationships, and the local community—rather than being overly consumed by global events and controversies. Doing so can help us live more productive and peaceful lives.

Dr. Caldwell advises Christians to prioritize their relationships and duties within their own spheres of influence, such as family and church, rather than attempting to address every issue presented by modern media. Election season is upon us, and the cacophony of voices and arguments around the election can be nearly deafening. Elections are consequential, and how we vote really does matter. Dr. Caldwell reminds us that we are on dangerous ground when we think we already know everything there is to know. In the musical fantasy Pinocchio, Jiminy Cricket tells Pinocchio, “Always let your conscience be your guide.” But this isn’t advice we should take or follow. Our consciences are not inerrant; they are meant to be informed by the truth of Scripture. As Christians, we want to be soaked in and saturated with the Word of God and then take and apply that to everything we do in life, including our role as citizens in the United States. Therefore, educating ourselves with the Word of God is the most important thing we can do to prepare ourselves to vote.

Dr. Caldwell reminds us that we are not voting to choose a pastor. Our government is secular, and its leaders are secular. He explains that we basically live in a two-party system of government, and what we need to consider as we prepare to vote is knowing which party’s platform is most agreeable to the church’s function in the world. We must not have blind allegiance to any political party. Both Republicans and Democrats have strayed from biblical morals, and neither party perfectly represents Christian values. We want to look at which party will be less restrictive on our mission as the church, which would represent more peaceable circumstances for us now, but also for our future generations, and which party/group is less egregious in its attack on the Word of God. But no matter the outcome of our elections, it doesn’t change the marching orders for the people of God. We are called to be faithful under whatever form of government that God gives to rule over us. God is sovereign over all these things, and we want to serve Him faithfully. We are to submit to and honor those in authority over us as far as we’re able to do so without disobeying our Lord. But if we must disobey them to obey and honor the Lord our God, we need to do so with reverence and respect. This, however, means that we must be prepared for persecution and suffering when it comes, willingly bearing up under it and accepting the consequences for doing what is right. Dr. Caldwell reminds us we must always be prepared for this; it’s just part of living in a world that hates Christ.

Throughout the video, Christians are reminded that God is sovereign and that our ultimate hope is not in a political leader or any form of government but in Christ, the true King. As citizens of both heaven and earth, believers should strive to influence the culture with truth, be model citizens, and live peaceably with everyone as far as it’s up to us. And just as the Apostle Paul exhorts Timothy, his son in the faith, we too, as those who live and walk by faith, must pray for all men, which includes those who rule over us and all who are in high positions, that we may lead peaceful and quiet lives, godly and dignified in every way. This is good and pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. Our singular aim and ambition as Christians is to please and glorify God in all that we do (See 2 Cor. 5:9); may we be biblically informed, focused, and intent on doing that as we head out to vote in this tense and hotly debated election of 2024.

In the New Testament, in Luke 2, we have a passage that informs us of a few things about Jesus as a young boy. Other than what we read from Luke 2:41-52 the Bible tells us nothing more about Jesus’ boyhood. At the end of this passage in Luke 2, we are told that Jesus increased in wisdom, stature, and favor with God and men. Do these words describe a typical childhood growth from infancy to toddler, to a young child, to a maturing young man? How should Christians think of Jesus as a child in a way that honors Him as Lord but also recognizes His humanity? Did Jesus have the typical knowledge, wisdom, insight, and understanding of an eight-year-old child? Or, because of His divine nature, did he retain the complete, all-knowing characteristic of the Lord of the universe? What should we think of extra non-biblical writings that tell us things about His childhood? What can we really know about our Lord’s younger years? Join us this week on the Straight Truth Podcast to gain biblical perspective and insight as Dr. Richard Caldwell and Dr. Josh Philpot discuss the life of Christ as a child and what we can actually know.

Dr. Caldwell explains that these questions provide an opportunity to talk about a matter that pertains to these kinds of questions and to the whole of Scripture itself. That matter is contentment. Dr. Caldwell says that the Scriptures should not only answer our questions, but the Scriptures should also dictate our questions. So when we start with questions like these, the answers will be whatever the Scriptures say; we say what the Scriptures say.

So then, we know that the eternal Son of God came from Heaven to earth, was born of a virgin, did not divest Himself of His divine nature, and took on an additional nature, a real human nature. He’s as much God on earth as He was in Heaven, and His human nature He took on was real. And there, at the end of the Luke 2 passage, it tells us He grew in wisdom, stature, and favor with God and men. These are things the Bible tells us, that’s what it says; that’s what we can know and believe. But to explain all of that mystery, we can’t and have to be content with that. Dr. Caldwell explains that he wants to be found faithful and a safe guide to the people of God, which means limiting himself to what the Bible says and to staying within those boundaries. The Scriptures are without error; our philosophizing is not. Trouble comes to people when they introduce ideas from a realm not found in the Scriptures but from outside the Scriptures, from their own minds and perspectives. There are heaps of speculations written by men in books on the childhood of Jesus; many fanciful things about His childhood have been written.

Jesus was the perfect man, which means at any stage of His development, what you meet with is something we don’t meet with in any other person, which is humanity without sin. What was that like as an eight-year-old child? We can only imagine. What was His level of understanding regarding the two natures in one person, undivided but not mixed? We don’t know, we can’t know, we just know that it is so. That’s all we need to know, or God would have told us otherwise. A discipline we must learn as believers is to subject our minds and hearts to the wisdom of God in what He has chosen to reveal and what He has chosen not to. The very first temptation in the garden involved this very issue, and Eve was deceived. As God’s people, people who have been saved out of that ignorance, we ought to be content to remain within the boundaries that God has given us. Deuteronomy 29:29 tells us the secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed to us belong to us. Therefore, we want to get to a place where we’re content enough even to be thought simple by some because of limiting ourselves to what God has chosen to reveal.

So when the Scriptures say that Jesus grew in stature, it means he went through the normal physical development of a young boy. When it speaks of Him growing in wisdom, Dr. Caldwell believes we should understand it to be speaking in the same way. Regarding the divine nature, God doesn’t have to learn anything. He’s omniscient, knowing everything. But in terms of Christ’s human nature, there was growth in knowledge, growth in wisdom. What we do know is that He never thought anything that was untruthful or anything that would have misled. He never embraced some view that reflected His culture or time, but that wasn’t true. He is the sinless, perfect Son of God. God and man in one person. But God has not chosen to reveal all the intricacies of that, and all our speculating and philosophizing will not change it. So we affirm what God affirms and walk content believing nothing contrary to what God has revealed.

As people living in a fallen world and in fallen bodies, we all suffer difficulties, pain, and hardships. It is no different for Christians. Yet, as we go through these things and deal with them, we are called to rejoice; that’s different. But we’re not just called to rejoice we’re commanded to rejoice always, not some of the times. This exhortation, along with the exhortations to pray without ceasing and give thanks in all circumstances in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 applies to all Christians everywhere in every situation. But how can Christians rejoice always? How can we have joy amid our heartache, pain, sicknesses, sufferings, and death? Even as we know the Bible teaches us that we will go through tribulations and suffering and that God Himself has ordained this for us, how do we do that with joy? Join us on the Straight Truth Podcast this week as Dr. Josh Philpot presents Dr. Richard Caldwell with these questions, seeking biblical answers to help us understand what it means to be joyful and rejoice even though our emotions seem to be saying something different.

Dr. Caldwell explains that believers can have more than one emotion operating in their hearts concurrently. The Word of God acknowledges this. In this same letter to the Thessalonians, where the Apostle Paul exhorts believers to rejoice always, he speaks of believers grieving over the loss of believers who have passed away. They grieved, and we grieve also. But as believers, we grieve differently than those who are lost because of the hope we have in Christ, the hope in a future resurrection. Just because a believer is sad, discouraged, or disheartened doesn’t mean they are sinning. Where sin enters the picture is where a believer is experiencing those emotions but refuses to rejoice at the same time. But what do we rejoice in when our circumstances have stirred up these painful and seemingly overwhelming emotions? We rejoice in the truth. We believe the truth of God’s Word and what He says about our life in Christ, about those we love who know Christ, about our life here until He returns, about those in Christ who pass now, about resurrection life, and about what our future will be. We rejoice in what the Lord has done, continues to do, and will do in the future. We’re called to live our lives in faith, by faith, in the Son of God, which means bringing God’s truth into the picture, whatever circumstances or feelings we’re dealing with.

It’s through everything we experience in life that we are being conformed to the image of Christ. This is how Romans 8:28 figures into God’s plan and purposes, and we can rejoice. Everything we go through is being used to shape, mold, and form us into the very likeness of Christ. We are called to embrace this perspective found in the truth God has given us and rejoice always in it. That’s why the book of James calls us to count it all joy when we encounter trials of various kinds, knowing that the trying of our faith produces steadfastness. That steadfastness has all these benefits that James goes on to list. We must bring all this additional information into the picture regardless of whatever we are battling.

Can we prepare ourselves beforehand to rejoice in these trials and difficulties, whatever the circumstance? We can. But, the only way to prepare is by knowing the Scriptures, and you have to know the Lord in order to have access to this. We’ve got to be learning the Scriptures, knowing the truth, and living our lives by faith. We have to believe the truth and practice the truth. It’s only by doing this we derive the benefits. The Lord allows our trials and regulates them, not allowing us to go through things we aren’t ready for or that He hasn’t equipped us for. These trials are for testing our spiritual muscles to get us to the place where the genuineness of our faith is on display through whatever it is that we are facing in life. We can’t prepare for what is years down the road except to prepare by believing God today. As we do this day by day, we are being prepared for the circumstances we will meet with that God planned for us in all eternity past. We believe Him right now in our present circumstances and keep believing and trusting Him as we walk in each day that He gives us. This is the only way we get ready and will be prepared for all God has in store for our future.

People often talk about leaving a legacy behind when they pass away. We may read and talk about those from the past who’ve left a lasting impression or impact on their generation. We may even know someone whose life has had this effect on our own lives. How should Christians think about the concept of legacy? Does the Bible have anything to say about believers leaving a legacy? What about the church? Should individual churches seek to leave behind a legacy? Join us this week on the Straight Truth Podcast as Dr. Josh Philpot asks Dr. Richard Caldwell to help us think through the concept of legacy and what kind of legacy we should be concerned with that would honor the Lord.

Dr. Caldwell says that talking about legacy means we are mindful of the future of those following us and wanting to leave them something that would be helpful when we’re gone. He says there are examples of this throughout the Scriptures. One he shares is from Proverbs 13:22, which says, “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the sinner’s wealth is laid up for the righteous.” He explains that God’s blessing on godly people is that even the way He has blessed them follows in future generations where sinners end up with nothing. This is what this verse sort of describes, but it also indicates that this is what man ought to be mindful of. Dr. Caldwell says we see this, whether it’s about teaching our children the truths of the Scriptures or the kind of legacies set before us in Hebrews 11. An example of parents with their children is when we read of Paul celebrating with Timothy over the fact that his faith was first seen in his mother and grandmother and how they influenced his life. God sets these examples before us in His Word because they’re meant to instruct, encourage, and fortify us in the things we are to live in today. It’s in that way believers want to leave a legacy. We should desire and want to leave behind us for the following generations an example that’s instructive, exhortative, and strengthens those who follow us in their faith in Christ.

We should not be concerned about the kind of worldly legacy that would come to mind of people who did great things, such as those who have achieved high political positions, won great battles, developed scientific breakthroughs, or received prestigious awards. That is not what we should be aiming for from the biblical standpoint. Our ambitions should be that Christ would be honored by our living and in our dying. We don’t aim to build up our name and monuments for ourselves, but we aim to build up Christ and His name. We exist for the glory of God. Therefore, our ambition as believers is to please and glorify the Lord. His name is what we want to leave behind for those who follow us. Our aim is for our feet to remain on the pathway of faith. We want those who follow our lives to realize how kind and gracious the Lord has been to save a sinner like us and that the same hope exists for them. That’s the kind of legacy we want to leave behind.

It’s a sobering thought about leaving behind a godly reputation to those who would follow after us. Dr. Caldwell shares something he’s heard and repeated often – the greatest gift we could ever give to people who love us is to live our lives in such a way that when we die, no one wonders where we are. We want to pursue Christ to the degree that no one will ever wonder after we’ve passed away whether our faith in Christ was genuine or not. It’s not the chief reason we do this, but it’s a great gift to leave someone where they are left with no doubt. That also is part of a godly legacy.

In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and Dr. Josh Philpot explore a profoundly shocking command from Jesus in Matthew 5:48 in the Sermon on the Mount, where He emphatically states, “You must be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.” This sounds like an impossible standard Jesus has placed before us and raises many questions. How can we be perfect as God is perfect? Isn’t perfection, humanly speaking, unattainable given our sin and sinfulness? What hope do we have in achieving such a perfection of a perfectly righteous and holy God? What did Jesus truly mean by these words? Join us today to hear Dr. Caldwell provide a biblically balanced answer to what it means to be “perfect” according to Christ’s command.

Dr. Caldwell understands the text to serve a two-fold purpose depending on who is hearing. For those who are lost and not yet saved, it points them to the standard that God requires, which is His own perfections, His own holiness. Individuals must realize they cannot live up to the perfections, the holiness of God. They must see their complete inability to meet God’s standard of perfection in their life and works and be aware of their sinfulness and need for forgiveness and grace. It reveals to them their need for the grace of God in salvation, which we know as believers comes only through Jesus Christ.

For believers, those who have heard and believed in Christ, that standard hasn’t changed. Believers have been gifted and clothed with the righteousness of Christ and have been forgiven all our sins. Yet, while we are the recipients of the merits of God’s own Son and have had His perfect righteousness imputed to us, God’s standard remains the same. We are to be continually pursuing growth in holiness and righteousness. We are to always strive along the road of sanctification for something beyond what we have known. As Dr. Caldwell emphasizes, this pursuit is not an effort to earn our salvation. Instead, it’s in response to the grace we have already received. We strive for this holiness from the secure foundation of our total acceptance in Christ. And while all believers are positionally perfect in Christ, our sanctification is not yet complete. Our ultimate hope is in the promise of glorification in God’s presence when we will finally be free from sin and made completely perfect in every way. But now, we are being shaped, formed, and molded into the character and likeness of Christ. This pursuit of growth in holiness is a lifelong process we refer to as progressive sanctification. None of us still living has arrived at God’s standard of perfection; it is unattainable in this life. That means there is room for growth in every one of us. Every area of life presents an opportunity for growth and becoming more like Christ.

Dr. Philpot brings up 1 Peter 1:15, where Peter seems to be saying the same thing in calling believers to be holy in their conduct because God is holy and calls us to be holy as He is holy. This reinforces all that Dr. Caldwell has been saying. Holiness is not optional for the believer it is part of the Christian calling and should be reflected in our daily living. We must recognize that we are not yet what we are going to be, continue to acknowledge our need for growth, and humbly depend on the Lord for His ongoing work in our lives, through His Spirit, His Word, and His grace to conform us more and more into the image of Christ.
