We're looking ahead to 2023 with this episode and corralling the movies we're most looking forward to that are just over the horizon. Some of them are still undated, but they're all at the very least in some degree of post-production at the very least (other than the notable addition of 'Roosevelt' which will make sense when you listen to the episode).

Regardless, we covered a lot of ground and didn't even mention any of the upcoming franchise installments on the way for 'John Wick,' 'Creed,' 'Mission Impossible,' 'Fast & Furious,' 'Dune,' or the Marvel or DC Cinematic Universe that maybe go without saying they deserve a spot here.

When it comes to Hollywood careers, Ron Howard is in a class all by himself. Beloved as Opie Taylor on "The Andy Griffith Show" in the 1960s and Richie Cunningham on "Happy Days" in the 1970s, he made his directing debut as a under the watchful eye of trash-cinema luminary Roger Corman with his films going on to cumulatively rack up nine Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director for "A Beautiful Mind."

Our very own Bruce Miller had the chance to talk to him as he's making the "For Your Consideration" rounds for his movie "Thirteen Lives," a dramatization of the Tham Luang cave rescue, as well as promoting his new book, "The Boys: A Memoir of Hollywood and Family" which he co-authored with his brother, Clint.

Also on the show we talk about new releases "Spoiler Alert" (adapted from a memoir where terminal cancer is the tragic twist) and "Violent Night" (a sort of "Home Alone" meets "John Wick"), both of which we think are very good but certainly might not make for the best double feature.

The Hollywood awards season is heating up, with every week seeing big-name Best Picture contenders going up on marquees across America.

On this very special episode we have a full-length interview with Bruce Davis, executive director of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for more than 20 years, who has a fascinating new book out that documents the behind-the-scenes history of the golden man himself: Oscar.

For this bonus episode we've got Jared McNett back onboard to spend some time digesting the series finale of 'Atlanta.'

Created by Donald Glover and premiering on FX in 2016, just a month before his song 'Redbone' hit the charts, 'Atlanta' started off as a show about a struggling rapper and their rise-and-grind manager. The episodes and seasons that followed stretched, distorted and occasionally even outright neglected that basic premise, with Glover and his creative partners incorporating mocumentary formats, animation, commercial spoofs and other wild techniques. 'Atlanta' could be all over the place, but despite all that stylistic restlessness the show was always deeply grounded in some combination of social, emotional, political, or cultural sentiment (occasionally all at the same time). It's a show the likes of which (rich, weird, funny and deeply rewarding) are unlikely to happen again anytime soon.

This week we have an interview with "Yellowstone" actors Luke Grimes and Kelsey Asbille, who play Kayce and Monica Dutton respectively, and Bruce Miller gets some great insights from them about the future of their characters and the rest of the Dutton family. "Yellowstone" season 5 premieres Sunday Nov. 13 on the Paramount Network.

We also dig out claws into some questions about Marvel's new "Black Panther" film, "Wakanda Forever," specifically whether or not we think it could repeat the box office success of its predecessor (which pulled in a cumulative $1.348 billion) and challenge "Top Gun: Maverick" for its top spot the list of movie money-makers for 2022.

And, finally, if the phrase "elves vomiting glitter" does anything for you, then the upcoming Disney+ series, "The Santa Clauses," might be a pleasant addition under your streaming TV tree this year.

The film, which documents NASA's Mars rover Opportunity, is in theaters now and will land on Amazon Prime on November 23rd. It's an unexpectedly moving movie that Bruce has short-listed for his Oscar pool, and we thought we'd take the opportunity to hash out some of the other great documentaries this year, what it is that makes a great non-fiction film or series, and since Bruce also recently had a chat with the 'Documentary Now!' creators we give some shine to that consistently brilliant satirical deconstruction of the genre.

Because it's the season for scary things, we can't get enough horror films in our lives. Thankfully, Netflix is here for us all with 'Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities.' An anthology series in the same vein as 'Alfred Hitchcock Presents,' they've been dropping two "episodes" a day since Tuesday. I say "episodes" because they're basically creepy cinematic novellas, each one helmed by a modern horror legend and featuring a cast-list loaded top to bottom with great actors.

As with every collection of stuff like this, it's an eclectic grab-bag but we're here to run through the episodes in a spoiler-free fashion and pick out the best of the bunch.
