This week…

A tale of two chefs. 

If you’re a regular listener to Studio 1, you’re probably already a fan of Chef Number One, Vision Australia’s semi-tame celebrity chef Tony Broun.

Tony spent most of the Eighties and nineties flambe-ing all the food groups on television shows and demonstration stages across Australia and around the world.

Then, for various medical reasons we needn’t go into here, Tony lost the majority of his sight.

Which led to him losing his career and his confidence - he just couldn’t do things the same way any more.

But today, having re-found his mojo, Tony tirelessly works to help people who have lost their sight to regain their confidence

Chef Number Two’s story is slightly different.

Alex Kolberg knew from the age of 14 that he wanted to be a chef.

Not necessarily the most logical choice of career for someone who is legally blind.

But with grit, determination and a little help from some special people, Alex is now seven years into his career as a professional chef and has just started a new job at Adelaide eatery Jibbi and Co

This week…

We’re eighteen months into the COVID -19 pandemic and it seems we’re still a long way from the light at the end of the tunnel.

In the last month, 13 million Australians have been subject to some sort of lockdown.

As we go to air, Queensland have extended their lockdown until 8th August and in New South Wales, where there is no end to the current lockdown in sight, the army are patrolling the streets making sure that people obey the rules

So over the next few weeks on Studio 1, we’re going to check in on a couple of people who live with low vision or blindness to see how they’re coping - and we’re going to see if we can get some advice from those in the know about how to survive extended periods of lockdown

This week’s guest is Melbourne resident Adua Merula Rosso.

“What do you look like?” Or indeed “What DO you look like?”

Believe it or If you don’t live with blindness or low vision, you might be surprised to hear that some of us who do can be quite self-conscious about how we look to other people.

To help Matthew and Sam - both of whom are somewhat out of their comfort zones - a lady with panache, poise and style.

Nikki Hind is the powerhouse behind Australian fashion label Blind Grit and the country’s only legally blind fashion designer.

This week…

Matthew’s guest on this week’s show is an adventurer, a conqueror of summits and a positivity campaigner.

His name is Eric Weihenmayer

Erik was the first blind person to conquer Everest back in 2001. He’s also climbed the seven summits and kayaked the Colorado River.

However, Eric doesn’t see any of these as his most important achievement.

Next month he hosts the latest in his series of annual “No Barriers” summits - which are part of his mission to “empower people to shatter barriers, find their inner purpose, and contribute their very best to the world.”

This week…

Matthew’s guests are mother and son Beth and Christian Guardino.

Christian is a very talented, charming young man.

He’s a musician and his instrument of choice is his voice

In 2017 he had a good run on U.S TV’s family entertainment juggernaut America’s Got Talent.

But as you know, here at Studio 1, we’re not interested in such shallow fripperies.

People involved in or watching these so-called reality television shows often talk of the participant’s “journey” - which generally means didthey got to Round 3 or the quarter finals and did they shout at anyone or cry like a baby on the way

But in the case of Beth and Christian, a much more interesting and significant journey actually began twenty one years ago when Christian was born with a severe visual impairment.

As Beth says in the course of the interview you’re about to hear…

“I started out holding this infant and not knowing if he would ever see my face or what life would look like for him… I never knew anybody else who was legally blind”

Blindness and low vision are often seen very much as “other” something that happens to someone else.

One of the things we try to do here at Studio 1 is to get across the message that the people this stuff happens to are just ordinary people like you with feelings, hopes, dreams and busy busy lives.

As you’re about to find out, Beth was just an ordinary human being who suddenly had to leverage superhuman levels of stamina and bravery to do the best she could for her child.

Studio 1 comes to you from the gleaming new branch of Specsavers in the Norwood Village Shopping Centre in suburban Adelaide for Matthew’s favourite episode in the Studio 1 calendar.

It’s time for him to practise what he preaches and get his eyes checked by his favourite eye healthcare professionals Jo and Lexie.

One of the most important things we do here at Studio 1 is to try to find imaginative ways to nag you to look after your eyes.

300,000 people in Australia have glaucoma - a disease that can lead to irreversible sight loss - but half of those people don’t even know they have it.

Sorry to be melodramatic, but that could include you.

1.25 million people in Australia have some level of macular degeneration - that’s the one that affects the retina that yer granny had.

And if your gran did indeed have macular degeneration - or your mum or anyone else in your family - you could be one of the 8 million Australians at risk of developing the condition later in life.

If you’ve listened to this show before, you’ll have heard Matthew and his various guests tell you that because of advances in eye health science a diagnosis of one of these conditions no longer means you’ve been sentenced to go blind

The key is to get your eyes checked on a regular basis.

It’s absolutely pain-free and could save your sight.

But in this week’s show we’re trying to emphasise the importance of fostering a good relationship with your high street eye-health professionals. It’s a good idea to have people who know you and can keep track of how your eyes change over time.

So once you’ve found ones you like, make like Matthew and be nice to them!
