  • Subaru Launches Killer 2025 Legacy Lease Deal
Get one of the most sensible sedans for a very sensible monthly payment

The Subaru Legacy is reaching the end of the road as the brand will soon end production of the all-wheel drive sedan. The roomy and capable Legacy can be credited with pioneering the all-wheel drive sedan class, and it has spanned 35 years and seven generations, providing families with four-season traction, excellent safety ratings, and great value. The 2025 Legacy ($25,210) comes in five trims: Base, Premium, Limited, Sport, and Touring XT. The two engine choices include a 180-horsepower 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder and a 260-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder, both mated to a CVT. This month, Subaru is offering the Legacy with a great lease deal that makes it even more affordable than its already remarkably low base price.

This month’s lease deal on the 2025 Subaru Legacy Base is a tremendous value. The low-mileage lease goes for just $279 per month for 36 months and 10,000 miles per year. Total due at signing is $3,279, and no security deposit is required. Total monthly payments amount to $10,044, and there’s a purchase option of $15,300 at the end of the lease term. Lessees must take delivery by June 2, 2025. Learn more here.

The 180-horsepower base engine of the Legacy Base won’t tear up the asphalt, but the ride is smooth and comfortable for hours on end. It also manages pavement imperfections quite well. The 0-60 mph sprint takes about 8 seconds, which isn’t especially quick, nor is it tepid. On top of that, it nets 30 mpg in combined driving, which isn't bad for a non-hybrid family sedan. The standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system is capable, continuously sending power to all four wheels for a consistent and predictable driving experience.

The Legacy’s cabin is roomy and well-executed, with 39.5 inches of rear legroom, more than many of its competitors. It also provides 37.2 inches of rear headroom and 57.4 inches of rear shoulder room, ample for tall passengers. Cargo space is 15.1 cubic feet, the same as the popular Toyota Camry.

Standard equipment on the Legacy Base includes 17-inch alloy wheels with machine finish, steering-responsive LED headlights, paddle shifters, automatic climate control, a 7-inch touchscreen, tire pressure monitoring, and keyless entry. It also comes standard with Subaru’s robust EyeSight driver assist technology, which provides automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control with lane-centering. The vehicle also earned a 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA.

    Final thoughts

The 2025 Subaru Legacy is a tried and true midsize family sedan that’s affordable, safe, and provides all-wheel drive assurance. It successfully carries the Subaru name by providing great standard safety features, ample space, and solid tech for its five occupants. Whether it’s for daily commuting or long road trips, the Legacy is more than capable of traversing roadways, dirt trails, and city streets smoothly and comfortably. Despite the lack of a hybrid variant, the Legacy is efficient. Before signing the lease agreement, be aware of taxes and registration fees, coupled with the total amount due. Read the lease agreement carefully and inquire about potential additional costs at the dealership.

  • New Vehicle Inventory Is Shrinking, 3 Ways Shoppers Are Affected
Auto dealers are juggling a complex set of market factors

Recent data from Cox Automotive has revealed that new vehicle inventory declined 7.4% in April compared to March. May began with 2.49 million new cars on dealer lots compared to 2.69 million at the start of April, representing a 10.5% drop. During the start of May, U.S. dealers had an average new vehicle supply lasting 66 days, down 16 days year-over-year and six days from last month. While spring has historically been a catalyst for new vehicle sales, inventories aren’t being replenished at their usual rate with lower manufacturing and delivery numbers from some automakers amid tariff uncertainty. These changes in production and delivery figures have caused many automakers to withdraw their financial guidance for 2025. In turn, consumers shopping for a new car face slimmer options, fewer incentives, and higher prices.

Automakers are on the verge of introducing 2026 production year vehicles at showrooms, but they’re also expected to update their inventory with higher tariff-related pricing. New vehicle sales increased 10.5% year-over-year in April, although this figure rises to 14.9% when you don’t account for April 2025 having one more selling day than April 2024, according to J.D. Power. Still, some consumers have been rushing to buy new cars to avoid tariff-induced price increases, so sales rates will likely continue tapering off from April. Mid-April saw a 30-day sales peak, but the month’s last two weeks experienced a noticeable decline in purchase rates.

A closer look at how recent dealer trends affect new car shoppers

The average new vehicle listing price was $48,656 at the end of April, marking an increase of $774, or 1.6%, from $47,882 at the start of the month, and $1,318 (2.8%) from a year earlier. While consumers brace for higher new car prices and are currently shopping with reduced inventories, price increases weren’t universal. BMW, Buick, Mitsubishi, and Dodge saw month-over-month price declines, while RAM, Lincoln, and Cadillac represented the most significant monthly cost hikes. Dealers are also giving shoppers fewer incentives for new vehicle purchases. According to Cox Automotive data, new vehicle sales incentives dropped to 6.7% of average transaction prices, down 7% from March.

However, some brands have more pre-tariff cars available than others. Toyota and Lexus have the lowest supply at 29 and 25 days, respectively, whereas RAM, Mitsubishi, Infiniti, and Land Rover have inventories exceeding 100 days. Due to tariffs, Ford has already raised prices on its Mexico-produced Bronco Sport, Maverick, and Mustang Mach-E. On Monday, Subaru announced tariff-related price increases for several models.

    Final thoughts

New vehicle shoppers can gain clarity during this turbulent time by understanding inventory figures, as automakers with higher dealer inventories may offer more pre-tariff-priced models. Additionally, knowing which automakers are more reliant on U.S. imports, like Audi, might indicate which companies are most likely to introduce price increases sooner rather than later. Slimmer inventories don’t necessarily mean you won’t get the model you want, but they may limit your ability to get certain features like specific color combinations.

  • Subaru Blames ‘Market Conditions’ as it Raises U.S. Vehicle Prices
Your favorite Subaru may get a bit pricier

Buyers looking for a new Outback, Forester, or Crosstrek this summer are in for bad news. In response to the impact of hefty 25% trade tariffs, Japanese automaker Subaru is implementing price jumps ranging from a few hundred to up to $2,000 starting in June. According to a notice posted on the website of Planet Subaru in Hanover, Massachusetts, cited by Carscoops and Reuters, the price increases will set buyers back an additional $750 and $2,055 on vehicles, depending on the model and trim.

Specifically, buyers searching for Crosstreks and Imprezas will get the lower end of the brunt, as they will see a $750 bump in price. On the other hand, Forester buyers must endure a price hike between $1,075 and $1,600, depending on trim. Ascent buyers will see an increase between $1,085 and $2,055, while buyers of the Legacy sedan will see a $1,600 bump.

Meanwhile, buyers shopping for Outback, BRZ, and WRX vehicles are the most impacted by the price jumps. Buyers of the wagon-shaped crossover will see a bump between $1,715 and $1,820, while BRZ and WRX buyers will see prices of their sporty rides jump an extra two grand.

The dealer disclosed that the price bumps are "insufficient" to cover the full costs of the tariffs, and as a result, they expect additional costs before the year's end. In statements to both outlets, Subaru did not explicitly cite the tariffs as the reason behind the price bumps but noted that they are a response to "current market conditions."

"The changes were made to offset increased costs while maintaining a solid value proposition for the customer. Subaru pricing is not based on the country of origin of its products," it said.

Subaru anticipates losing billions from tariffs

The news of Subaru's price increases comes as the automaker refused to give a full earnings forecast for the 2025-2026 fiscal year; a move that fellow Japanese carmakers Honda, Nissan, and Mazda have done in the past few weeks. During its news conference on May 14, Subaru executives said the hefty car industry import tariffs introduced by the Trump administration could cost automakers $2.5 billion within its current fiscal year if they fail to do anything to combat their impact.

According to data from S&P Global Mobility, Subaru imports as much as 45% of its U.S. market vehicles from overseas; however, Senior Managing Executive Officer Tomoaki Emori says it can squeeze out more cars from its Indiana factory. The factory, which has been making cars since 1987, produced nearly 345,000 Ascents, Crosstrek, and Outbacks during Subaru's 2024-2025 fiscal year. Though its supplier base is prepared to churn out as many as 370,000 vehicles per year, Emori said that it is capable of making half a million cars.

“We still have the production capacity, so we would like to mitigate the impact of tariffs while making use of it,” Emori said. “Under the current circumstances, there is probably no way not to expand in the U.S. We must think about how to go about that.”

Subaru has been monitoring the tariff impact on the company

The move comes after a previous warning about the tariff impact on Subaru issued to its dealers a few months ago. Subaru of America Vehicle Planning and Logistics VP Lisa Quan warned in a letter addressed to dealers dated March 20, 2025, that the automaker has been "actively assessing the potential effects of tariffs" on the company.

It added that due to "business uncertainties related to auto industry tariffs," the current prices of vehicles "cannot be protected and may be subject to change" after April 2, 2025. This means that the price of certain models or the prices dealers pay for cars coming out of the factory may be adjusted to absorb the tariffs, which would eventually be passed onto the consumer.

During Subaru's May 14 press conference announcing its 2024-2025 fiscal year financial results, Subaru CEO Atsushi Osaki said that the company will add "various measures" if the impact of U.S. tariffs continues, adding that it will "strive to further enhance profitability by continuing to improve productivity and create new revenue opportunities."

    Final thoughts

It is important to note that the tariff-related price increases are impacting Subaru's entire range of models, including those built at its Indiana factory, such as the Ascent, Crosstrek, and Outback.

According to American Automobile Labeling Act (AALA) documents provided by the NHTSA, while the three models are built in Indiana, half of the parts in the Ascent and Outback are of US/Canada origin, and the Crosstrek is comprised of just 45% US/Canada parts. Most of their foreign parts originate from the land of the rising sun; 30% of the Ascent and Outback and 35% of the Crosstrek are Japanese parts.

To reiterate what Ford CEO Jim Farley previously said, “It’s not as simple as just assembling more vehicles in the US. OEMs must also balance customer affordability, which means the ability to import parts tariff-free.”

  • Top 5 Vehicles with the Most Standard Safety Features in 2025
    Safety is a priority

Car shoppers have different priorities: style, performance, comfort, space, fuel efficiency, powertrain type, technology, price, reliability, and safety. Not every one of those aspects appeals to the emotions, and the category of safety might even sound a little boring, but no one can dispute that this is one of the most important things to look for when it comes to car buying. Not long ago, it used to be considered a big deal that your car had anti-lock brakes and airbags. Now, all automakers who sell vehicles in the U.S. are required to provide three-point seat belts, side and front airbags, rearview cameras, LATCH car seat attachment points, and tire pressure monitoring systems. Beyond that, there are no safety requirements, and it’s up to each car company to outfit their vehicles the way they choose.

    2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6

    Hyundai

In 2025, automakers are pushing the boundaries of safety tech. Knee airbags, seat-belt pretensioners, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, semi-autonomous hands-free driver assist tech, and driver attention alert are pervasive in the industry. Manufacturers are also adding more standard safety features, making it easier than ever for buyers to drive with peace of mind, without spending extra on optional packages. While advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) were once limited to luxury vehicles or high trims, many brands now include robust safety suites as standard across even their most affordable models. If you're in the market for a new vehicle and prioritize protection, here are the top five vehicles in 2025 that offer the most comprehensive standard safety features.

    2025 Honda Accord
    2025 Honda Accord Touring

    Honda

The 2025 Honda Accord ($28,295) has long been a benchmark in the midsize sedan segment, and the 2025 model solidifies that position by offering one of the most extensive standard safety packages on the market. The Accord comes in gas and hybrid trims, and it’s extremely family-friendly with plenty of room and great cargo space. Adding an impressive set of standard safety features rounds out the set for one of the best family cars in the history of automobiles. It’s also an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ for 2025. Learn more here.

    2023 Honda Accord

    Honda

    Standard Safety Features:

    • Honda Sensing: Lane Keeping Assist System, Traffic Sign Recognition, Collision Mitigation Braking System, Forward Collision Warning, Road Departure Mitigation System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist, Front and Rear Parking Sensors
    • Collision Mitigation Braking System
    • Forward Collision Warning
    • Lane Departure Warning
    • Road Departure Mitigation System
    • Vehicle Stability Assist with traction control
    • Rear Seat Reminder
    • Tire Pressure Monitoring System with location indicators
    • Automatic high beam control

    Why It Stands Out:
Honda doesn’t hold back on safety, even in the base LX trim. Every Accord gets Honda Sensing, a suite of safety features packaged together as standard equipment. For the base model to receive a comprehensive set of standard safety features is a huge plus for the Accord.

    2025 Toyota RAV4
    2025 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

    Toyota

The Toyota RAV4 ($29,250) is coming to the end of its fifth generation, but it remains one of the best-selling vehicles in the industry and for good reason. It’s fuel efficient, reliable, practical, roomy, and very easy to operate thanks to great physical controls. It also has gas, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid models with a range of solid power outputs and fuel economies. Every RAV4 gets an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and an integrated backup camera. The 2025 RAV4 continues the model’s tradition of safety with its comprehensive Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 suite that's impressive at this price. Overall, it's a well-appointed family SUV that provides more than you'd expect. Learn more here.

    2025 Toyota RAV4

    Toyota

    Standard Safety Features:

    • Star Safety System: Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Anti-lock Brake System, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Brake Assist, and Smart Stop Technology
    • Toyota Safety Sense 2.5: Pre-Collision System w/ Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert w/ Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Automatic High Beams, Road Sign Assist
    • Front and Rear Parking Assist with Automatic Braking
    • Tire Pressure Monitor System with direct pressure readout and individual tire location alert
    • Blind Spot Monitor

    Why It Stands Out:
The RAV4 has long been one of the best family cars in terms of standard safety features, and you get a lot for a very affordable price. Toyota’s safety packages are comprehensive when it comes to safety coverage, and you don’t have to get the top trim model to benefit from them.

    2025 Subaru Outback
    2023 Subaru Outback

The Subaru Outback ($29,010) is legendary and not just for its standard all-wheel drive system. It’s a remarkably safe SUV that’s well-packaged with standard features. Unlike many competitors, Subaru includes EyeSight even on the base Outback trim, which means every buyer gets the same core suite of features. Plus, symmetrical all-wheel drive enhances traction and control, adding another layer of safety in poor driving conditions. The 2025 Outback is also an IIHS Top Safety Pick. If you’re looking for a vehicle that combines rugged utility with top-tier standard safety, the 2025 Subaru Outback is tough to beat. Learn more here.

    2026 Subaru Outback

    Subaru

    Standard Safety Features:

    • EyeSight Driver Assist Technology: Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking, Lane Keep Assist, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Sway Warning, Lead Vehicle Start Alert, Brake Light Recognition:
    • DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System
    • High Beam Assist
    • Brake Assist
    • Brake Override System
    • 180-Degree Front View Monitor
    • Whiplash Reducing Front Seats
    • Automatic Emergency Steering
    • Rear Seat Reminder
    • Reverse Automatic Braking
    • Adaptive headlights with high beam control

    Why It Stands Out:
Subaru’s camera-based EyeSight system is one of the most refined in the business, and the addition of driver monitoring in the base model is a major bonus for distracted driving prevention.

    2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6
    2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6

    Hyundai

The Ioniq 6 ($37,850) might not get as much love as its smaller Ioniq 5 SUV sibling, but it happens to be one of the best EVs on the market today for numerous reasons. It bears refined and unique styling that’s like nothing else in the sedan segment, gas or electric. It’s also got great range with the rear-wheel drive model offering up to 342 miles on a full charge. As electric vehicles become more mainstream, the Ioniq 6 is also leading the charge in safety tech with one of the most comprehensive sets of safety tech found anywhere in the industry. It also earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating in 2024. Learn more here.

    2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6

    Hyundai

    Standard Safety Features:

    • Hyundai SmartSense: Forward Collision Avoidance Assist with pedestrian and cyclist detection and junction-turning detection.
    • Blind Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist
    • Rear Cross-traffic Collision Avoidance Assist
    • Reverse Parking Collision Avoidance Assist
    • Lane Keeping Assist
    • Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go
    • Intelligent Speed Limit Assist
    • Safe Exit Assist
    • Blind-Spot View Monitor
    • Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control
    • Highway Driving Assist
    • Driver Attention Warning
    • Surround View Monitor
    • Head-up Display

    Why It Stands Out:
The Ioniq 6’s safety suite is one of the most high-tech on the market. Hyundai’s inclusion of Highway Driving Assist on all trims—usually reserved for higher-priced vehicles—makes the Ioniq 6 one of the most future-ready and safest electric cars you can buy in 2025.

    2025 Volvo XC60
    Volvo XC60 Recharge T8

No safety list would be complete without a Volvo, and its best-selling vehicle ranks high when it comes to standard safety tech. The XC60 ($48,345) has PHEV and mild hybrid models that provide excellent efficiency and power. Moreover, all XC60s have standard all-wheel drive, an 11.2-inch center infotainment display, and wireless phone charging. While typically associated with premium vehicles, the 2025 XC60 proves that you don’t need to splurge on top trims to enjoy luxury-level protection. This full set of safety features comes on every model. Learn more here.

    2025 Volvo XC60

    Volvo

    Standard Safety Features:

    • Volvo Pilot Assist
    • City Safety Collision Avoidance Technology
    • Run-Off Road Mitigation
    • Rear Collision Warning
    • 360-degree parking sensors.
    • Driver Alert Control
    • Cross Traffic Alert with Auto Brake
    • Blind-spot monitoring
    • Rear cross-traffic alert
    • Forward collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection
    • Forward automatic emergency braking
    • Lane-departure warning
    • Lane-keep assist
    • Pilot Assist (adaptive cruise control with lane centering)
    • Driver-attention monitoring
    • Traffic-sign recognition
    • Automatic high-beam headlights
    • Head-up display

    Why It Stands Out:
The XC60’s blend of passive and active safety is exceptional, with features like City Safety Collision Avoidance Technology that provides oncoming vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle lane mitigation rarely found in competing vehicles at this price point. Volvo’s reputation for crashworthiness and occupant protection is well-earned.

    Final thoughts

High-tech safety features used to be an optional luxury in the automotive world. In 2025, it’s increasingly a standard expectation—and these five vehicles rise to the occasion. Whether you prefer a midsize sedan, a weather-friendly AWD SUV, or a sleek electric vehicle, these models offer the most robust protection without forcing you to upgrade to higher trims or expensive packages. As automakers continue to refine ADAS technology, we can expect even more features—like automated lane changes and hands-free driving—to become widely available. But even today, buyers have access to remarkable safety systems right out of the box.

Whether you’re looking for something rugged, family-friendly, or electric, May 2025 is a great time to find a car that fits both your lifestyle and your budget.

  • Orange Cones and Squealing Tires: What Autocross is All About and How to Dominate Your Next Event
What is it, this thing they call autocross?

You’ve seen them. From a distance, they look a little out of place; people, some of them wearing comically large hats to shield their faces from the glare, standing amidst orange cones and cars of all types, in the vast empty parking lots of dying malls and underutilized stadia. And to paraphrase the great Talking Heads, you might ask yourself, “Well, what are they doing there?” Why does this particular breed of automotive enthusiast brave heat, sunburn, and bruised egos to power around a car park when they could be driving on a track, tearing up the canyons, or kicking back, behind the wheel of a high-tech driving simulator, in air-conditioned comfort?

    Brendan Sobers

“The AI” says that “autocross is a motorsports discipline where competitors navigate a course marked by traffic cones in a large paved area like a parking lot or airport tarmac, aiming to achieve the fastest time without hitting any cones. It's a fun, safe, and low-cost way to learn about performance driving and improve car handling skills.” And “the AI” would be right.

But to better understand what drives this particular subset of enthusiasts to spend their weekends—and a bit of their sanity—chasing tenths of a second, I consulted a physician. Denver ophthalmologist Vivek Koduri moonlights as a local-favorite autocross instructor—while also racking up some impressive tarmac skills of his own—in his gorgeous Sapphire Blue 981 Boxster GTS.

    Brendan Sobers

Vivek was introduced to autocross by a friend back in his college days and figured it’d be a low-risk, car-friendly way to explore the limits of his Infiniti G35. What began as an occasional hobby quickly turned into a bit of an obsession that continues today and has followed him through a succession of cars including a Subaru BRZ and now his current Porsche.

    All are welcome

According to Vivek, one of the great things about autocross is that it truly is “run-what-you-brung.” You might see anything from an old Crown Vic to a new Huracán in the lineup, but most participants will agree that autocross favors handling over power, with smaller and lighter cars often taking the top spots. Think Miata, Honda S2000, and Lotus Elise. Or, Vivek’s 981 Boxster. Because of how the classes are structured (and different clubs will have different classes), it’s more important to be competitive within your own rung than to emerge as the overall winner. The goal is to promote close competition, yet each group is going to have its standouts. One might have a 991.2 GT3 as the dominant car, while in others it may be a Volkswagen GTI or Mustang GT. Incidentally, while he’d love to autocross something completely raw and unfiltered, like an Ariel Atom, Vivek says that it wouldn’t necessarily be competitive, due to the way the classes are structured.

    Brendan Sobers

That brings up the transmission question. According to Vivek, there is an advantage with modern, dual-clutch automatics—like the PDK in his Porsche—versus manual transmission cars, though he’d gladly take a manual over a traditional slushbox on-course. Being able to quickly downshift from second to first in tight corners with a dual-clutch is priceless, though you will probably spend a lot of time in second.

Tires are important, too. What might rule on the racetrack isn’t necessarily what’s best for autocross. While tires with treadwear ratings down to 200 are allowed, something like a Cup 2 R needs heat, and autocross, with its 60-second bursts of fury, just doesn’t provide it. Yokohama’s Advan AO52 and Bridgestone Potenza RE-71RS are popular, and Vitour’s P1 seems to be the move for heavier cars.

    Brendan Sobers

What about ABS and helpers like traction control and electronic stability management? Vivek keeps his nannies on—in their sportiest settings—because Porsches are so good that they likely won’t intervene unless the situation is already beyond driver control. We both took a moment to snicker at the automotive YouTubers who fully disengage these same nannies the moment they sit down in a car (and make sure it’s all on camera).

There are plenty of ways to enjoy your car, and autocross is just one of them. It’s undeniably fun to drive fast—but in Vivek’s eyes, doing it in a safe, controlled environment is the smartest way to learn. The fact that it’s relatively affordable, easy on your car, and requires no special equipment only adds to the appeal. Plus, the skills you build on-course translate directly to the street. Still, Vivek admits that given the choice, he’d take an autocross day over a run through our Colorado canyons, a point where he and I might just have to agree to disagree.

But I came here to dominate, not just participate

And dominate you will if you follow the doctor’s advice. Or, at least shave a little time off your next autocross run. Hey, you clicked. According to Vivek, there are five things you can do to improve your autocross times instantly:

    Brendan Sobers

    1. Walk the course. At any autocross event, you’ll have only a limited number of runs, so arrive early to inspect the course surface and memorize the layout. It’s easier than you’d think to get lost in the sea of cones once you're in the driver’s seat.

    2. Run and review in-car video. Try to identify your mistakes after each run and make on-the-fly adjustments. You think hearing yourself speak on video is uncomfortable? Just wait until you critically watch your own performance driving. It’s humbling but incredibly valuable.

    3. Ride along with someone faster than you. And have them ride along with you. Pay close attention to their driving line, braking points, and overall technique. Then, let them critique your driving. Few things accelerate learning more than seeing how it’s done properly and getting honest feedback on your own performance

    4. Take your tires to the limit. The fastest time is generally the shortest line around the course that maximizes the grip of your tires. It’s about finding the ideal balance of throttle, braking, and steering to stay as close as possible to theoretical 100% traction. Every autocross course is different and demands its own driving formula, but you’ll always want to be on either the gas or the brakes—never coasting. The quickest drivers are usually the smoothest, but smooth doesn’t mean unaggressive; it means controlled, precise, and efficient.

    5. Keep practicing and keep it fun. Take a deep breath, relax, but stay present and aware. Make mental notes in real time as you drive. The goal is to develop muscle memory behind the wheel so your actions become second nature rather than consciously thinking through every move you make.

    Is autocross for you?

If you're autocross-curious, Hagerty’s Motorsportreg.com is a great place to find local events. The SCCA’s autocross page is another excellent resource for getting started. Take Dr. Koduri’s professional advice and give it a shot. The stakes are low and the rewards are high. And if you still hit those cones, you can always get your eyes checked.

  • Ditch the Minivan: These SUVs Seat 8 People
When a van just won’t do

If the minivan aesthetic isn’t your thing, but you still need to haul a small army of kids, in-laws, or road trip buddies, you're in luck. Today’s 8-passenger SUVs don’t just compete with minivans on seating and cargo; they outperform them in versatility, towing capability, and let’s be honest, curb appeal.

From affordable family haulers to full-size SUVs that can tow boats and conquer trails, these models prove you don’t have to sacrifice design or performance to get big seating numbers. Below, we break down some of the best 8-seater SUVs you can buy in 2025 — highlighting what they cost, what they offer, and why they deserve a spot in your driveway.

    2025 Nissan Pathfinder – Starting at $37,790
    2025 Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek

    2025 Kia Telluride – Starting at $37,805
    2025 Kia Telluride

    Kia

Kia’s Telluride continues to rack up accolades for a reason. With an upscale interior, excellent ride quality and standard 8-passenger seating, it's a no-brainer for families. Rear seat legroom is decent at 31.4 inches, and the 21 cubic feet of space behind the third row leaves room for actual luggage, even with a full house.

    2025 Hyundai Palisade – Starting at $38,675
    2025 Hyundai Palisade

    Hyundai

The Palisade shares a platform with the Telluride but takes on a slightly more luxurious feel, especially in its higher trims. Eight seats come standard in lower trims, and the third row is just as roomy. With a plush interior and high-tech features, it’s a solid pick for parents who don’t want to feel like a chauffeur.

    2025 Mazda CX-90 – Starting at $39,500
    2025 Mazda CX-90

    Mazda

Mazda’s new flagship SUV brings premium vibes to the 8-passenger segment. It’s a joy to drive, with a punchy 280-horsepower turbocharged six-cylinder and a smooth ride. Though cargo space behind the third row is limited (14.9 cubic feet), this SUV is more about luxury and road manners than brute practicality.

    2025 Subaru Ascent – Starting at $40,330
    2025 Subaru Ascent

    Subaru

Subaru’s largest vehicle sticks to the brand’s formula: standard all-wheel drive, strong safety scores and smart packaging. The base Premium model seats eight, and the third row offers a generous 31.7 inches of legroom. If you live in a snowy climate or need family-friendly off-pavement chops, the Ascent should be high on your list.

    2025 Toyota Highlander – Starting at $41,270
    2025 Toyota Highlander Turbo

    Toyota

A long-time family favorite, the Highlander continues to impress with reliability and a well-rounded skillset. It tows up to 5,000 pounds and includes standard 8-passenger seating on lower trims. The third row is tight (28 inches of legroom), but it works in a pinch, especially for kids.

    Honda

The Honda Pilot’s big cabin is tailor-made for families, with third-row legroom that stretches to 32.5 inches — among the best in this class. Most trims offer eight seats, and cargo space behind the third row is a solid 18.6 cubic feet. It’s a straightforward, practical SUV with Honda’s hallmark reliability baked in.

    2025 Chevrolet Traverse – Starting at $42,195
    2025 Chevrolet Traverse

    Chevrolet

If you want sheer interior space, the Traverse delivers. The redesigned model has a roomy third row (32.1 inches of legroom) and comes with eight seats in its base LT trim. It also offers muscular styling and a smooth ride, making it one of the more comfortable long-distance cruisers in this group.

2025 Toyota Grand Highlander – Starting at $42,310
    2025 Toyota Grand Highlander Platinum

    Toyota

Don’t let the name fool you — this isn’t just a stretched Highlander. The Grand Highlander is a new platform, and it shows. It offers the most third-row legroom of any SUV on this list (33.5 inches) and still squeezes in 20.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind it. This is the model to get if you plan on using all eight seats regularly.

    2025 Nissan Armada – Starting at $59,530
    2025 Nissan Armada Platinum Reserve

Want full-size SUV power? The new Nissan Armada trades its old V8 for a 425-horsepower twin-turbo V6, increasing both power and efficiency. It’s the only body-on-frame SUV here, meaning it’s built for towing (up to 8,500 pounds) and off-road adventures. All trims offer 8-passenger seating, and the third row now boasts 32.9 inches of legroom.

    2025 Chevrolet Tahoe – Starting at $61,995
    2025 Chevrolet Tahoe

    Chevrolet

If you’re ready to jump to full-size, the Chevrolet Tahoe brings serious capability with its truck-based frame and standard V8 engine. It seats up to nine, with eight-passenger seating available on the base trim, and offers 25.5 cubic feet of space behind the third row. With a max tow rating of 8,400 pounds, it’s one of the most capable SUVs on this list.

    2025 Jeep Wagoneer – Starting at $62,040
    2025 Jeep Wagoneer

    Jeep

Jeep’s big SUV is back and bolder than ever. The Wagoneer seats eight in its base form and offers third-row legroom that rivals luxury brands. The standard model has 27.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, while the extended Wagoneer L stretches that to 44.2 cubic feet — plenty of room for gear, groceries or road trip luggage.

    Final thoughts

Minivans might still win when it comes to sliding doors and low step-in heights, but modern 8-seater SUVs are more versatile than ever. Whether you’re looking for all-weather confidence, extra towing muscle, or just a way to get your kids and their friends to soccer practice without complaints, there’s an option that fits your needs — and your style.

Budget-conscious buyers can start with models like the Kia Telluride or Hyundai Palisade, while those wanting premium performance and towing strength should consider the Nissan Armada or Jeep Wagoneer. The bottom line? You can ditch the minivan and still seat the whole family in comfort and style.

  • Shopping for a 2025 Subaru Crosstrek? Better Alternatives You Should Consider
    An all-around versatile machine

The Subaru Crosstrek was redesigned in 2024 and is now the brand’s best-selling model. Known for its tremendous versatility on pavement and off-road, the Crosstrek throws a wide net of appeal that’s only bolstered by its standard all-wheel drive, rugged aesthetics, and a reasonable $25,810 base price. However, if you're considering the Crosstrek, it's worth exploring other options that may offer better value, performance, or features. Let's take a closer look at how the Crosstrek compares with three of its fiercest competitors: the 2025 Hyundai Kona, 2025 Mazda CX-30, and 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross.

2025 Subaru Crosstrek: Rugged and reliable
    2024 Subaru Crosstrek

    Subaru

The 2025 Subaru Crosstrek is available in five trims: Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Wilderness. Pricing starts at $25,810 for the Base model and climbs to $32,610 for the rugged Wilderness edition. The Crosstrek comes with two engine options. Only the base trim gets the lower output engine, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 152 horsepower, while Premium trims and above upgrade to a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 182 horsepower. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) and all-wheel drive are standard across the lineup. In terms of efficiency, the Crosstrek with the base engine returns an EPA-estimated 27 mpg in the city, 34 mpg on the highway, and 29 mpg combined. The more off-road-focused Wilderness trim sacrifices some efficiency for capability, posting 25 city, 29 highway, and 27 combined mpg figures.

    2024 Subaru Crosstrek

    Subaru

Standard features for lower trims include all-wheel drive, EyeSight driver assist technology, torque vectoring, X-Mode drive modes, 8.7 inches of ground clearance (9.3 inches for the Wilderness model), automatic LED headlights, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Upgraded trims get standard features like keyless access with pushbutton start, upgraded upholstery, a leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel, heated front seats, 18” aluminum alloy wheels, blind spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic braking.

    2024 Subaru Crosstrek

    Subaru

Inside, the Crosstrek features a 7.0-inch touchscreen as standard, while higher trims benefit from a larger 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Rear-seat passengers will find a comfortable 36.5 inches of legroom, and the Crosstrek offers 19.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and up to 54.7 cubic feet with the seats folded. Safety is a strong point, with standard EyeSight Driver Assist Technology that includes adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and pre-collision braking.

The Crosstrek has a unique outdoorsy appeal, and the addition of the Wilderness trim makes it even more attractive. Hyundai

The newly redesigned 2025 Hyundai Kona starts at $24,450 and offers a choice of gas and electric powertrains across multiple trims. The base engine is a 147-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired with a continuously variable transmission, standard on the SE, SEL, and SEL Convenience trims. For more power, the N-Line S, N-Line, and Limited trims upgrade to a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine producing 190 horsepower through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Hyundai also offers an EV variant producing 201 horsepower and boasting an estimated 261-mile driving range. The Crosstrek doesn’t offer an EV yet, but it will sell a hybrid version later this year.

Fuel economy for the gas models is impressive, with up to 28 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. The Kona EV nets up to 261 miles on a full charge, and it's the only EV in this entire set. The Kona has grown significantly, with a 7-inch longer wheelbase improving both rear legroom and cargo capacity over previous models. The cargo capacity in the Kona is a substantial 25.5 cubic feet behind the second row and 63.7 cubic feet with the seats folded flat, both figures eclipsing the Crosstrek’s.

The cabin of the 2025 Kona is thoroughly modern. Part of that is due to an artfully curved panoramic display that dominates the dash. Every trim level gets a 12.3-inch infotainment screen. Lower trims get a 4.2-inch gauge cluster, but the N-Line and Limited trims match the infotainment screen with a 12.3-inch configurable instrument display. Standard features include automatic LED headlights, wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, rearview monitor with parking guidance, remote entry with pushbutton start, and safety features like rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist, forward collision avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, lane keeping assist, and rear occupant alert. Fancier trimmed Konas get 19” premium wheels, a full-width LED DRL, premium seat upholstery, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, navigation, Bose premium audio, adaptive cruise control, and a power sunroof.

The Kona exudes a totally different vibe from the more old-school Crosstrek. It’s got a more urban aesthetic and a cabin that looks and feels more tech-forward and open than the Crosstrek. It’s also sportier to drive, and its top-tier engine churns out more power. All-wheel drive isn’t standard like the Crosstrek, but you can add AWD to every trim level for a mere $1,500. The CX-30 manages a respectable EPA-estimated 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. Inside, the CX-30 offers an 8.8-inch infotainment display on lower trims, while upper trims feature a 10.25-inch touchscreen. Inside, the Mazda CX-30 delivers an experience that feels closer to a luxury SUV than a typical compact crossover and wholly different from the Crosstrek. 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross: Practical and efficient
    2025 Toyota Corolla Cross XLE

    Toyota

For those seeking practical transportation with a dose of style, the 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross is a compelling choice, and it’s the most well-rounded commuter in this set. The $24,135 base price is the lowest one here, beating the Crosstrek by more than a grand. The Corolla Cross is offered in L, LE, and XLE trims, as well as Hybrid S, SE, XSE, and Nightshade trims. Hybrid pricing starts at $28,495.

Under the hood, the Corolla Cross features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine generating 169 horsepower, paired with a continuously variable transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available for buyers seeking additional traction. The Hybrid's powertrain is comprised of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and three electric motors, making a combined 196 horsepower. Fuel economy is one of the Corolla Cross’s strengths, with FWD models achieving 31 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. Even AWD models manage a strong 29 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. Hybrid versions get 45 city and 38 highway for improved efficiency.

The Corolla Cross is practical and no-nonsense inside, closer to the Crosstrek in its execution but more dissimilar to the Kona and the CX-30. The cabin is stocked with an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, but there is no upgrade to get a bigger infotainment screen like the others here. Rear legroom is a bit tighter compared to rivals at only 32 inches, down more than four inches from the Crosstrek. Cargo space is decent, offering 17 cubic feet behind the second row seats and 44 cubic feet with the seats folded flat. Toyota’s Safety Sense 3.0 suite is included across the lineup, offering features like adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and automatic emergency braking.

For those who aren't keen on a unique style, the Corolla Cross travels quite nicely under the radar. It is, after all, a crossover version of the ubiquitous Corolla sedan, and it executes the taller ethos nicely. It might not have the boldness of the Kona or the rugged aesthetic of the Subaru, but it's also far less polarizing in terms of looks. Buyers will be drawn to its easy driving manners and stellar reliability. Learn more here.

    Final thoughts

Looking at the numbers, the 2025 Subaru Crosstrek is a compelling choice in this set, and the standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, high safety marks, and even more rugged Wilderness trim make a strong case. The base engine is underpowered compared to rivals, but that’s only on the lowest trim level. The Hyundai Kona impresses with strong available power, advanced tech features, and the option of an electric model. The Mazda CX-30 brings premium materials, strong performance, and standard AWD, making it a driver’s favorite. Meanwhile, the Toyota Corolla Cross offers excellent fuel economy, impressive cargo space, and the reliability that Toyota is known for. It’s down on space and tech, but its commuter-friendliness is a big draw.

While the 2025 Subaru Crosstrek offers undeniable ruggedness and standard all-wheel drive, rivals like the Hyundai Kona, Mazda CX-30, and Toyota Corolla Cross present strong cases for shoppers who prioritize different aspects. The Kona leads in technology and powertrain variety, the CX-30 impresses with upscale touches and strong turbocharged performance, and the Corolla Cross remains a benchmark for efficiency and practicality. Before deciding, it’s worth test-driving these alternatives to see which model best fits your needs.
