Kailey Newkirk // None of us has the power to force our faith to grow, no matter how hard we try. But here's the good news: under the right conditions, you can't stop fruit from growing! If we find our faith is not maturing at the rate we expected or wanted, we must ask ourselves, "Am I trying to grow under all the wrong conditions?" Listen in to Paul's advice to the young church at Colossae on how to create favorable conditions for our maturing faith, together, as the body of Christ.

Grace Veronica // Paul writes to the young Colossian church from a prison cell, and claims to be joyful in his suffering. What does he mean? Is he suggesting that suffering is what God wants for us? Not at all. Paul is reminding us that suffering will continue to be a part of our experience in this fallen world. But, in our willingness to endure hardship for the sake of the gospel, we share with the world around us a life-saving secret: Christ is available to each and every one of us. The gospel is for me, too! When we suffer for the sake of someone gaining life in Christ, we stand in solidarity with Jesus who suffered that we might live.

Kailey Newkirk // “I want to follow Jesus, but sometimes I’m just not sure how!”
Can you relate?
Paul writes a letter to the Colossian church because it’s young, and therefore vulnerable to outside influences that would stifle its growth. They have faith in Christ—now Paul teaches them how to create the right conditions for that faith to grow into maturity. Christians don’t mature in their faith by simply aging. You can be a mature new Christian, and you can be an immature old one. Practicing our faith is what matures us—not the passage of time alone. And the first step of this practice is centering our lives around the supremacy of Christ. Join us for week one of this practical how-to from the apostle Paul to a church that hopes to “grow up.”

Garry Abbott // When her brother died, Martha tells Jesus he could have prevented it if he’d shown up sooner. That’s an emotion every one of us who follow Jesus will likely feel in some season of our lives.
Have you ever felt like Jesus was a “no-show?” It may seem that way to we who are constrained by time—but both time and death submit to a word from Jesus. And those words are available today, not just the future. Easter reminds us that there is not just hope for the future, but hope in the here and now—in every space we invite Jesus into. Not all hope need be deferred.

Join us as we conclude our meditative journey through Lent. Over the last five weeks, we have reflected on Jesus' response to our need: he sees us and is moved to act on our behalf. As we prepare our hearts for Holy Week and the celebration of Easter, we turn our gaze to the cross and the tomb, and lean into the truth that Jesus loves us with all he has.
This podcast is the final part of a six-week series inspired by the idea of walking through a Labyrinth, an ancient geometric shape that symbolizes a journey. We encourage you to go for a walk if you are able, or choose another physical activity, to best engage your body, heart, and mind as you listen. Resist the urge to speed through or skip ahead, and lean into the moments of silence with an open heart. Each week's meditation takes us deeper into the Season of Lent as we move toward the hope and joy of Easter.

Doug Foley // Do we try to impress God with our good and holy deeds?
If so, it’s possible we misunderstand what Jesus actually wants from us.
We’re not as impressive as we think. In fact, Jesus feels great tenderness toward those who are getting it wrong!
In the gospel of Mark, Jesus is approached by a rich young ruler who asks, “What must I do to inherit the kingdom of God?” And the young man asks this question believing (or at least hoping) he has already done it. In characteristic fashion, Jesus is not impressed with the young man’s long list of obedient deeds, but asks him for the only thing any of us really have to give—our whole heart.

Join us as we continue our meditative journey through Lent. Last week, we reflected on Jesus' deep empathy for us, and now we lean into the truth that our God is for us. He is not idle or absent. He is our champion, moved to advocate on our behalf.

Garry Abbott // Are you interruptible? Jesus was. And his job was arguably much more urgent than mine or yours. In Mark chapter 10, a blind man named Bartimaeus calls out to Jesus for mercy, and the crowd chastises him. Their message was crystal clear—your inconvenient needs are not important enough to take up Jesus’ precious time. But the beauty of our Savior is that our inconvenient neediness is precisely the reason he came.

Join us as we continue our meditative journey through Lent. Last week, we reflected on the truth that God is not overwhelmed by our needs or emotions, and now we shift our focus to the emotional nature of his response to us. Our Savior looks at us and his heart is moved with empathy for our hurts, our needs, and our burdens.

Kailey Newkirk // Why does God sometimes make us wait? One of the hardest (and yet most freeing) lessons in the Christian faith is that Jesus does not work on our human timelines. What we perceive as painful delays are often God's means of grace. We simply don't have enough information to see it. The hard part of this lesson is that faith in Jesus is not the same as faith in our agenda for Jesus. The freeing part is that, once we understand this, we stop wondering why he doesn't love us enough to answer our prayers, and we start recognizing the faith-building gift of waiting on the Lord.
