Garry Abbott // In the book of Isaiah, God makes a promise to his people that he would bring joy to the mourning—a mourning that would last 700 years in exile. Simeon was a man who waited his whole life to see the promise of God fulfilled in a savior who would finally bring lasting joy—his waiting was rewarded as he gazed into the face of baby Jesus.
We often pursue happiness as though it’s a lasting experience. But the reality is that happiness is all about circumstances, and circumstances change. Joy is a choice. It’s the choice to remember that the best things really are still coming, even in the longest of waits.

Kailey Newkirk // God never makes a promise that he won't keep. In this first week of Advent, we look to the promise he made through Isaiah: to bring light into our darkness. Has he fulfilled this promise already? Yes, through Jesus in the manger. Does he continue to fulfill this promise still? Yes--through Jesus in you and me.

Garry Abbott // Being the church requires more than just a change of course, it requires a change of heart.
In Acts 11, the church at Antioch lived out their faith in ways that were a dramatic departure from their own cultural norms. But to sustain such counter-cultural living for the sake of the gospel requires more than simple behavior modification—it requires a living hope. Anything less, and our new ways of living will fade into old habits, and we will miss out on the abundant life God means for us to live.

Johnny Outing // In the early church, Peter—the rock on whom Jesus chose to build his church—has a shocking experience. God himself, (the God for whom Peter follows all the rules!), commands Peter to break one. He asks Peter to eat ceremonially unclean food with ceremonially unclean people, because Jesus Christ has torn down the cultural traditions that divide clean and unclean forever. The transformational nature of the gospel invites us into close proximity with those who are diametrically opposed to us, because the church (and each of us) becomes more beautiful and sanctified with each of us in it.

O.J. Aldrich // Questions are the way we invite relationship, but our answer are important too.The early church had to answer some fundamental questions that continue to be life-defining for us today. Do you believe that Jesus is the son of God? Do you trust him for the forgiveness of your sins and the lordship of your life? Is it your intention to follow him all the days of your life? These are important questions, and our answers change everything.

Jim Keller // The thoughts and attitudes you hold on the inside have a way of working themselves to the outside--whether you want them to or not. Paul admonishes his friends in Philippi to be authentic in their faith. In other words, what they think and feel on the inside should match up with their actions on the outside. If not, others will see the mismatch and perhaps attribute this duplicity to Jesus himself. Paul's words echo down through the centuries to us today, guiding us to authentically live out our faith in obedience to the risen Christ.

Garry Abbott // Is there something or someone you'd be willing to die for? Most of us can think of at least one. A family member, an ideal about justice, a faith--something we hold so dear we'd lay down our lives in a heartbeat. But in the first chapter of Philippians, Paul turns this question around in a way that exposes our true motivations. It's one thing for Christians to say we'd die for Jesus, but then spend our days living for wealth or power or pleasure.

Dan Sherfield // We can look at Jesus’ time on earth as an example or a roadmap for how we can live our own lives. We can pay attention to who he loved and served as a blueprint for who we ought to love and serve. Doing so allows us to accept and show the amazing love he has for us all. Let’s not live our lives on the sidelines but be active participants in his work.

Johnny Outing // Our mission and life’s circumstances and God’s provision and our obedience—these all work together. God is still faithful even amid our unfaithfulness. This is a beautiful yet confusing concept for most of us. But keep your courage because the God we serve is the same yesterday and today and will be the same God tomorrow.

Garry Abbott // In his journey in chains to Rome from Jerusalem, the apostle Paul reminds us that the greatest gift we can give to the people we love is to share the ways that Jesus continues to rescue us.
