Paul realizes that there is strife and anxiousness in the church at Philippi. Peace is needed, personally and collectively. It is only the peace of God that can invade our hearts, enabling us to transcend the difficult situations we face. This peace will guard our hearts and minds.

Paul encourages the church to join him on the journey of following Christ. Because we are citizens of heaven, we look forward to the prize of eternity with God. But until then, we press on in our journey.

Paul could rightly boast in his family and faith heritage instead of Christ. He has the pedigree, status and smarts. But knowing Christ surpasses everything. Everything pales in comparison to the resurrection of Jesus—it brings power and life. All of this depends on faith.

Paul identifies two individuals who will soon be arriving at the church in Philippi: Timothy and Epaphroditus. These men have been valuable to Paul and will be valuable to the church. Honor is due toward people who seek not their own interests, but the interests of Jesus. All three men are genuinely concerned for the Philippians.

Paul writes a reminder that God is at work in the midst of all situations. It is in circumstances that God does a refining work in and through those who follow Christ. The rest of the world remains in darkness, but God enables Christians to shine as lights.

Paul does not offer himself as an example of humility, but rather the supreme example of the incarnation of Jesus. The humble example of the Servant King sets the precedent of obedience to the will of God. This sets the stage for unity among Christians during difficult circumstances.

Paul’s faith involves proper perspective on life and death. He is compelled to honor Christ in both situations. Faith is what unites those who are in Christ, propelling them beyond current circumstances. Believe, as well as suffering, are involved in the faith-journey.

Paul reflects on his current situation: chained to Roman guards awaiting trial and eventual execution. However, because of Paul’s witness, the Gospel has advanced, changing the hearts of those who comes in contact with the Truth. Christ is being proclaimed whatever the motivation, and in that Paul rejoices.

Paul, who is a prisoner in a jail in Rome, writes to some of his closest friends about rejoicing in the midst of difficult situations. He reminds us that there are eternal reasons for rejoicing which transcend the temporal experiences we face. As a result, we are able to live beyond our circumstances for our good and God’s glory, and rejoice.

Half of the population of the world is made up of males, but is there a difference between being a male and being a man? Rather than allowing culture to define manhood, we need to look to the Truth of Scripture for a description of manhood as God intended.
