St. Joseph County Commissioners Tuesday delayed a vote on abolishing the county board of voter registration, after a number of people attending the meeting raised questions about the appearance of political bias. Commissioners will take it up again in their January 24th meeting. The county is one of only three in Indiana still maintaining a board of voter registration, and proponents say ending it would save money and distribute its work inside the county clerk's office.

Indiana 3rd District Congressman Jim Banks says he will seek Indiana's open US Senate seat next year. Senator Mike Braun is giving up the seat to seek the Republican nomination for Governor. Banks has become known as one of the more conservative Republicans in Congress. Indiana Democratic party chair Mike Schmuhl says Banks cares more about being on Tucker Carlson's Fox News TV show than the future of Indiana.

Southwest Airlines reports 90% of the passengers that suffered through the airline's holiday cancellations have gotten a refund, and the remaining 10% can expect theirs in the next few days. Southwest added that all bags with name tags on them have been returned as well. The Dallas-based airline said it will spend more than a billion dollars on system upgrades to avoid a repeat of mass flight cancellations over Christmas.

Notre Dame men's basketball took an 84-71 loss last night at Purcell Pavilion against Florida State. The 7th ranked Notre Dame women play tomorrow night at Clemson.

Hockey: the Chicago Blackhawks won at home, downing Buffalo 4-to-3 in overtime. The Detroit Redwings lost at Arizona in a shootout, 4-to-3.

Tesla, SpaceX and Twitter mogul Elon Musk is facing trial over a five-year-old tweet. Musk claimed in an August 20-18 Tweet he had lined up the financing to pay for a $72 billion buyout of Tesla. But the buyout never happened and now Musk will have to explain under oath why he tweeted that statement. Jury selection in San Francisco is on track to start today.

Long time fugitive Italian Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro has been arrested while being treated at a private health clinic in Palermo, Sicily. Denaro has been a wanted fugitive since 1993 and was considered one of Europe's most wanted men. The mob boss was sentenced to life in prison in 1992 for playing a role in the murders of two anti-Mafia prosecutors and is suspected of being responsible for dozens of murders.

The Dallas Cowboys completed the field for this weekend's NFL Divisional Round playoffs with Monday night's 31-to-14 win over the Buccaneers in Tampa. This Saturday, the Jacksonville Jaguars are at Kansas City, and the New York Giants are at Philadelphia. On Sunday, the Cincinnati Bengals play at Buffalo, and the Cowboys are in San Francisco against the 49ers.

College basketball: 3rd ranked Purdue won at Michigan State, 64-63. Illinois won at Minnesota, 78-60. Tonight: the Notre Dame men host Florida State at Purcell Pavilion. The tipoff is at 7.

Neighbors who used the Martin Luther King Junior Community Center in South Bend for years said their farewells over the weekend, as the city prepares to tear it down to build a new, larger center, to be called the Martin Luther King Dream Center. Eleven million dollars from American Rescue Plan funds will go toward building it. The new center is scheduled to open in 20-24. Sunday would have been Dr. King's 94th birthday.

Word came Saturday that five more classified documents were found at President Biden's Delaware home. They were apparently found while transferring items to the Department of Justice. This brings the total of documents with classified markings found at Biden’s Delaware home and his old office up to roughly two dozen. A special counsel in the Justice Department is looking into the matter.

We also learned over the weekend that Lisa Marie Presley will be laid to rest at Graceland, her father Elvis Presley's Memphis home. Elvis, his parents, and Lisa Marie's son Benjamin Keough, who died in 20-20, are also buried there. No date has been set so far. Lisa Marie died last week after going into cardiac arrest. She was 54 years old.

The NFL Wild Card weekend saw three winners Sunday: the Buffalo Bills over the Miami Dolphins 34-31, the New York Giants over the Minnesota Vikings, 31-24, and last night, the Cincinnati Bengals over the Baltimore Ravens 24-17. On Saturday, the San Francisco 49ers downed the Seattle Seahawks 41-23, and the Jacksonville Jaguars came back for a 31-30 win over the LA Chargers. One more Wild Card weekend game tonight: the Dallas Cowboys at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Notre Dame women's basketball won at Syracuse Sunday, 72-56. The Irish men lost at Syracuse Saturday, 78-73.

And Irish hockey tied one and lost one with 2nd ranked Minnesota, 2-all Friday, losing 3-nothing Saturday.

South Bend's Redevelopment Commission voted Thursday to seek reimbursement from developer Dave Matthews of about five million dollars in city money meant to insure that a grocery store would be part of an east bank development. In an apparent effort to satisfy the commitment, Matthews put a couple of coolers and tables with snacks in ground floor space, saying it would become a grocery store later this year. Matthews was left hanging when Martins, after changing ownership, backed out of a deal to open a store in the building.

Attorney General Merrick Garland has appointed a special counsel to oversee the investigation into President Biden's handling of classified documents during his time as Vice President. Former US attorney Robert Hur, a Trump appointee, will lead the probe. This after a second set of classified documents was found in the garage of Biden's Delaware home. Biden said Thursday he's cooperating and believes the investigation will show the documents were accidentally misplaced, and promptly returned when discovered.

Rock n Roll pioneer Elvis Presley's only child has died at the age of 54. Lisa Marie Presley was found unresponsive in her California home Thursday morning, and died later in the day at a hospital. We're told it appears she went into cardiac arrest while alone. Her mother Priscilla Presley announced her death last night.

7th ranked Notre Dame women's basketball easily downed Wake Forest at Purcell Pavilion last night, 86-47.

The NFL playoffs open this weekend, with six games on tap Saturday through Monday. Tomorrow, Seattle is at San Francisco, and the LA Chargers are at Jacksonville. Sunday, it's Miami at Buffalo, the New York Giants at Minnesota, and Baltimore at Cincinnati. Monday night, the Dallas Cowboys are at Tampa Bay.

The tight market for law enforcement officers nationwide is leading many department to raise salaries in hopes of attracting more people, and Mishawaka is the latest example. As part of a new agreement with the union, most on the street officers in Mishawaka will go from about 64 thousand dollars a year to 77 thousand by 20-24. The FOP says it's a step in the right direction, but Mishawaka is still playing catchup after falling behind other cities. Like in many professions, there are fewer applicants in recent years as more and more older officers retire.

The FAA says a corrupted data file caused of thousands of flight delays on Wednesday, as a key safety information system went off line Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. It caused over eight thousand delays and well over a thousand cancellations. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg says they have not ruled out the possibility of a cyberattack, but there's nothing pointing to that so far. Flight schedules are expected to be close to normal today.

Tomorrow's Mega Millions jackpot could make someone very rich, but not as rich as you might think. The estimated 1-point-3 billion dollar jackpot carries a roughly 700 million dollar payout if the winner takes the cash option, and the IRS will get at least a couple hundred million of that. Still, a winner should take home about 433 million dollars after taxes.
