Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb's State of the State address to lawmakers last night in Indy highlighted education and public health initiatives, as he expands his usual focus on economic and business development in his final two years in office. Holcomb is term limited, and cannot run again in 20-24. He is proposing large funding increases for K-through-12 education, and significant reforms in the public health system.

President Biden says he was surprised to learn that a few classified government documents were found at his former office. About a dozen documents from Biden's time as Vice President were found about a week before last year's midterm elections by Biden's lawyers as they packed up papers from the office. They notified the National Archives, and the documents were returned to them. It will be up to Biden's Attorney General to decide whether more investigation is necessary.

No jackpot winner once again last night in the Mega Millions lottery drawing, as the prize continues to grow. The cash payout prize for the next drawing Friday night will be over 700 million dollars before taxes, over 1-point-3 billion if taken as an annuity. Odds of winning are infinitesimal, befitting the prize.

Notre Dame men's basketball finally got an ACC win last night, downing Georgia Tech in overtime 73-72 at Purcell Pavilion. In the Big Ten, Michigan State won at Wisconsin, 69-65, and Illinois won at Nebraska, 76-to-50. Tonight, Indiana is at Penn State.

NBA: the Detroit Pistons lost at Philadelphia, 147-116. The Pistons are back home tonight against Minnesota. Also tonight, the Chicago Bulls play at Washington, and the Indiana Pacers are at New York.

It will be later this month before the South Bend council looks at a resolution for racial discrimination reparations in the form of spending on minority communities in the city. A dispute over the legalities of putting the resolution on the council agenda for yesterday led to the delay, with city clerk Dawn Jones asserting she has authority to add items, and some on the council claiming proper protocol was not followed. The council is expected to take up the resolution January 23rd.

President Biden has declared a state of emergency in California because of heavy rains causing major flooding across the northern half of the state. The pricey city of Montecito, home to Oprah and Prince Harry, has been ordered evacuated after more than eight inches of rain in the last 24 hours.

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin has been released from the hospital in Cincinnati, and is now back in Buffalo continuing his recovery from cardiac arrest on the field during a Monday night NFL game January 2nd. Hamlin collapsed after making a tackle in the first quarter of a game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

College football's national championship goes to the Georgia Bulldogs for the second straight year. Georgia dominated TCU from start to finish last night in Los Angeles, 65-to-7.

Notre Dame men's basketball hosts Georgia Tech tonight at Purcell Pavilion. The tipoff is at 7.

In the Big Ten, Michigan State is at Wisconsin tonight, and Illinois is at Nebraska.

President Biden made his first visit to the southwest border Sunday, in El Paso, Texas, on his way to Mexico City for summit meetings with North American leaders this week. He has meetings there with Mexican and Canadian leaders. Frequent Biden critic Texas Governor Greg Abbott called the President's visit 20 billion dollars and two years too late.

Members of the House of Representatives were finally sworn in early Saturday, after a 15th ballot finally made California Republican Kevin McCarthy House Speaker. McCarthy had to concede significant power compared to earlier speakers to secure the job, concessions that will slow House action on many issues over the next two years.

The MegaMillions lottery jackpot will be over a billion with a b dollars for tomorrow's drawing, after no winning ticket emerged in Friday night's drawing. Tomorrow's drawing is at 11pm eastern time. The cash option will be at least 568 million dollars. This will be the fifth largest lottery prize in US history.

The NFL wrapped its regular season Sunday, as the Detroit Lions knocked the Green Bay Packers out of the playoffs in Green Bay, 20-to-16. The Lions fell short themselves when the Seattle Seahawks beat the LA Rams in overtime.

The Bears and Colts both closed disappointing seasons with losses on Sunday, the Colts surrendering a touchdown and two point conversion in the final minute.

First round playoff byes go to the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles. Everybody else in the playoffs will play this coming weekend.

Notre Dame men's and women's basketball both lost at North Carolina over the weekend. The men lost on Saturday, 81-to-64, and the women lost Sunday, 60-to-50.

Irish hockey split a pair at Wisconsin, losing 2-nothing Friday, winning 6-to-4 Saturday.

And Mishawaka Cavemen wrestling brought home a state title Saturday, winning the 3A championship over Columbus East.

We are still at least a month from having a new director in place for the South Bend Community Police Review Board. The common council took over the process after the first director, Joshua Reynolds, resigned under pressure after word that he had been disciplined numerous times as an Indianapolis police officer. There are more than 50 applicants, and finalists are expected to undergo public interviews next month.

President Biden offered both carrot and stick to potential immigrants at the southern border Thursday, announcing a new application process to admit up to 30 thousand Cuban, Hatians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans by air each month, but also ramping up efforts to immediately deport those who cross illegally at the border. His message is basically: go throough the ptocess, don't just show up at the border.

The signs renaming the VA Clinic in Mishawaka in honor of the late Congresswoman Jackie Walorski are now on the building. Congress passed the renaming and President Biden signed it back in September. Walorski sponsored a number of bills aimed at helping veterans during her years in Congress. She died in a car crash in Elkhart County last August.

It's now official, former Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman is transferring to Notre Dame. That makes him the leading candidate for starting quarterback next season for the Irish.

College basketball: top ranked Purdue won at Ohio State, 71-69. Number 15 Indiana lost at Iowa, 91-89. Tomorrow, Notre Dame is at North Carolina, and the Irish women play there Sunday.

In his final two year budget, Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb is targeting two major areas for significant spending increases: health and education. He's asking lawmakers to spend more on local health departments, and focus on fentanyl, the synthetic opioid responsible for the vast majority of overdose deaths. The Governor also wants schools better funded, including money to end textbook fees for all public school parents. He's proposing over a billion dollars in new spending on education alone. The new legislative session begins in the coming days.

More drama Wednesday in Washington as House members once again failed to elect a Speaker to lead the chamber and begin legislative business. Republicans have a slim majority, but 20 of them refuse to back California's Kevin McCarthy to lead them. That's enough to stalemate the process until somebody gives ground.

The mastermind behind "Operation Varsity Blues" has been sentenced to 3 and a half years in prison. Prosecutors charged over 50 people in the scheme, including actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin. Ringleader Rick Singer was able to get kids into top colleges by helping them cheat on standardized tests and bribing college coaches to take them as athletic recruits, even if they didn't play the sport in question.
